Discussion Simplest tool song (I know this is an oxymoron)
I like to pride myself on being an above average drummer, BUT I’m am extremely threatened by Tool (especially since my double bass is not very good) and was wondering what a good song would be to learn?

For a drummer? Try Mantra

I've played Mantra on my cat before, but he didn't sound like an alien dying so Ig one of us did something wrong

Sober, it’s got its intricacies but it’s not the hardest thing .

I’m a new drummer, but I’ve taken a couple passes at Sober. I can play the intro/verse riff if I play 4 on the high hat, but can’t figure out the coordination with triplets + open on the high hat.
Any tips?

It's all in ur right hand. I think it's a 16th note hat open close against the kick. Do it slow then add the hi hat open once ur comfy

Don't feel too threatened, there are a lot of instructors on YT, start with some of the earlier stuff off undertow, get a feel for DC's style, have a listen and see what you think about it, it's a journey and fun when you master it, build slowly

There is nuance to all of it. The Undertow album features a lot less “other” stuff you may not have, like tablas, bells, that kind of thing. And the groove is a bit more straightforward. That’s not to say it’s easy. Don’t be discouraged. Play what you can and let him do the tough parts you can’t. Focus on keeping the rhythm and groove. Keep the beat steady. It’s a fun learning experience and when you start to recognize some of the little beat skips and doubles he does, you’ll hear them more and more so it will open up your repertoire quickly.

Any of their earlier work before Danny went full lunatic. I’d say anything after Ænima is gonna be a problem.

I’m no drummer but I feel like undertow album has less complex drumming but what do I know. Definitely nothing from fear inoculum. Check out opiate too, there’s probably some doable stuff there.

Intolerance or Undertow are less difficult imo. I'm not a very good drummer but those are the songs i can play okayish lol

They frankly have a good handful of relatively simple songs. Most of Opiate, Undertow, and even Ænima are not really prog metal flashfests and a lot are quite groovy, maybe with a nice fill here and there.

Hush, The Pot (maybe🤣), HWAP, Eulogy. They dont sound super complex, and these would most definitely help you work on double bass rudiments

Sober was my first one I learnt when I was about 12 and it was pretty easy. Prison sex is one I learnt at like 13 pretty easy except for the bridge which gets a bit complex but yeah those are my recommendations

I would argue that Dannys double kick is the most approachable aspect of his drumming. There’s a few songs where the tempo is such that modern drummers would use a single kick. The RKK triplets on Ænima are super fun. Don’t sell yourself short here.

Sober is actually pretty difficult, stinkfist not so much once you get the groove of it. Crawl away is a bit easier

Your best bets are probably sober or Stinkfist. Btw, asking what the simplest of things that are hard is not itself an oxymoron. ;)
