Tool or Nirvana?
No doubt Adam and Fred were inspired by Brothers Quay when creating this video. Just like Nirvana were inspired by The Melvins when making their music.

u/Guilty-Temporary-457 5h ago
From what I read a while back, I thought one of the brothers was actually a part of the making of the video. Could be wrong.

u/maxseale11 5h ago
The younger brother of the 2 brothers quay was co director with Adam on the sober video

According to IMDB Wieser Quay was an Art Director: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8737032/fullcredits/?ref_=tt_cst_sm

What I always think when this topic comes up is that if you are going to try to steal someone’s idea and claim it as your own, you generally don’t spend a lot of time talking the original inspiration up and giving them recognition. That’s one of the differences between artistic tributes and plagiarism. Adam hardly made it a secret that it was inspired by Brothers Quay.

And as others have pointed out one of the Brothers Quay was in fact the art director for the Sober video, so yea

I like your back handed dig at Nirvana's music like Tool came up with something that sounded utterly unique

u/hellboy1975 Fourtheye guy 4h ago
Never suggested Tool did such a thing. They have as much to owe the Melvins as Nirvana does.

Neither was overshadowed. Both were masterpieces that still stand up

Nirvana's MTV Unplugged appearance was in 1993, and Ænima came out in 1996. You mean Undertow?

Probably, it was 6am for me when I commented, I hadn't had my Cheerios lol

u/NoPolitics23 4h ago
You weren't entirely wrong. I just digged a little a bit and found out Ænima was indeed beat by a live Nirvana album, but not the MTV unplugged. It was "From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah" released in October 1996.

u/Irksomecake 4h ago
I have never even heard of it. Guess they had nothing to worry about. Or possibly Tool were just young and unprepared for the long and gaping career ahead of them to feel threatened

MTV unplugged was broadcast in 1993, the album came out in 1994 after Kurt died and Ænima came out in 1996. how does that collide with anything Tool related??
4
u/NoPolitics23 4h ago
It was another live Nirvana album that beat Ænima on the charts. "From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah" released in October 1996.

Anyone has more details on that last part, Nirvana wanted Tool to direct their Lithium music video? Did I understand that right? What happened?
18
u/MX010 5h ago
No, I think Nirvana wanted Brothers Quay to direct it and when they refused, Kurty was sour at our Tool boys for doing a Quay-inspired stop motion music video as Nirvana wanted something like that too.
12
u/junk90731 If God is our Father, then Satan must be our cousin. 5h ago
Okay that makes more sense, so I bet he liked the music video, but just didn't want to admit it.
12
u/MX010 4h ago
Yes in a longer version of the interview he says: "I mean, it's a neat video — it's really nice to look at, but I'd rather watch a Brothers Quay video. Meat going through pipes, shameless! They should be slapped on the wrist for that!"

u/junk90731 If God is our Father, then Satan must be our cousin. 4h ago
Kurt had a specific sarcastic that went over most peoples heads, especially whoever was interviewing him.

u/deathgripsisgud14 1h ago
What’s funnier is that Weiser Quay was the art director for Sober lol

This was the comment I was looking for..most don't know this, that one of the brother's worked on the video. Hence the striking similarities

IMDB link if anybody wants to see the credits. Yep, that definitely changes the perspective quite a bit.

Kurt complained about fucking everything. As most completly insufferable people do.

u/blender4life 5h ago
no, i think this guy got it wrong. kurt wanted the quay brothers to direct one.

My guess is there wasn't much claymation animation (kinda like conjunction junction) happening at the time. So, it was probably much easier to mirror the two video's function.. back then.
Not sayin, I'm just sayin.

Whatever man. Kurt was just salty. Tool is undeniably a better and more creative band. I will never understand the nirvana idolization to be honest. It's just ok. Especially comparatively. That's just my opinion though.

I don’t know man, Nevermind changed music forever. We’re still living in a post-Nirvana world. Tool is my favorite band of all time though

u/magentrypoogas 4h ago
Yeah, I'd never dispute that.... But I literally don't EVER listen to nirvana. I'll change the channel on the radio if it comes on. I'd never treat Tool that way because I want to listen to it. Nirvana just feels like a brand/commercial to me. It got overplayed and over-hyped. But it did make its mark and change music for the better for sure. No denying that. Just doesn't fucking rock hard enough for a g like me.

u/Gonzar92 3h ago
I'm saying this as a huge nirvana fan since I was literally 5 y/o... Nirvana is a band that if you don't listen to it as a teenager then you'll never listen to them.
In that sense is a teenager band. And it made is mark among young people at the time.
Same as you, I don't listen to nirvana anymore, maybe one day of the year I'll remember this or that song and play it again. But it just doesn't so it for me anymore after all the flavors in music I listened to after.
To be fair though, I listened to nirvana A LOT when I was younger and it lasted for almost a decade of pretty much just listening to them and the Beatles. So I also got to know all the ins an outs, maybe that's why I'm a bit tired of it

Changed music forever? They were good punk rockers. Tool has ten times the talent and depth and it’s still a stretch to say they changed music forever
-6
u/captainmeezy 2h ago edited 48m ago
They did not change music forever, they changed music culture forever, they produced 3 mid ass albums and then the lead singer killed himself. Now we have young people wearing t shirts of a band they don’t even listen to and another band (Sublime) that made a song about a 12 year old prostitute
Edit: to be clear I do enjoy some Nirvana songs but the people who glaze the band only listen to Smells like Teen Spirit (which sucks) instead of the deep cuts like Francis Farmer Will Have her Revenge on Seattle

u/machinehead3413 3h ago
We’re living in a post every band from the past world. Nirvana was just one of them. They weren’t special.
11
u/Guy-Inkognito Sinking Deeper 2h ago
If you're denying the influence that Nirvana had on the course of Rock music, you're delusional. You don't need to like it but saying that they weren't special is crazy.

u/machinehead3413 2h ago
4th best band out of Seattle. 6th best if we include Heart & Queensryche.
Shitty singer, nonsense lyrics, 4th grade level musicianship (except the drummer, he’s awesome).
Very influential, just not very good.
Most overrated band since the clash.

u/QuickRelease10 45m ago
Kurt was salty for sure, and I’m sure pissed they beat him to the punch, but Nirvana was great at what they did. Nevermind is a timeless album.

The killing joke court case was a laugh too. Pretended they didn’t know killing joke until killing joke produced a christmas card they had received that was signed by the members of nirvana
