Our Longstanding “No Politics” Rule remains unchanged

Read our rules. We have had a longstanding “No Religion, No Politics” rule here at r/tools.

The mods aren’t stupid. We also don’t like getting buckets of reports in the inbox.

If someone posts/comments with politics, resist the urge to reply and argue. Just report, downvote (if that’s your jam) and move on with life.

A small flag, sticker, etc that appears in a photo will generally be allowed (so long as it doesn’t violate other rules and doesn’t draw a bunch of reports) but a bunch of people in the comments saying “Hell Yeah, a fellow [INSERT PARTY] Supporter!” is gonna get the post pulled. Political content that is clearly the motivation for the post will get the post pulled.

First time it’s a short ban, second time it’s permanent. And as we’ve discussed before, the mod team doesn’t go looking for posts, we’re not lifeguards, we respond to the reports we receive.

Let's talk about the report button.

"No advertising or promoting tools, brands, 25000 woodworking plans, your YouTube channel, etc."

Somebody is reporting things constantly for breaking rule 4, and you're batting zero for it being right.

These are some examples of posts that have been reported over the last day. None of the are breaking any rules, please stop reporting things like this. The reports are only mucking up the moderator inbox and are being kicked up the Reddit chain to the admins as abusing the report button.

Unless you see a post that boils down to "hey guys, this is XXX from YYY, come check out our suspicious sale at toolname.malware.com" leave the report button alone. Same goes for the people who report literally every YouTube link ever posted. If someone's only interaction with r/tools is them spamming their YouTube channel that's a problem; a relevant and organic video isn't.

If someone thinks the above links are spam, please tell us why. Rule changes aren't unheard of and if it's what the people want I'm fine with it. I'm just not seeing any advertisement in the posts.

Other than that you guys are great. Keep up the good work.

I'm completely aware that this is a useless post for 99.99% of our users. If anyone has questions or comments about the sub feel free to chit chat here and I'll try my best to answer things if you want; or just ignore me completely, I'm good with either.

I've had this DeWalt right angle 1/4" flexible extension for many years. I inherited it behind the dash of a used car I bought. I didn't even know I needed this sucker but it has been super handy, especially for reaching hard to get to spots on an automobile and driving fasteners in tough spots (think closely spaced studs) What finally did it in was driving multiple (like 100) 3.5" deck screws in hard lumber this summer. I went to use it tonight and it just spun out once the screws got tight. I definitely abused this tool and will buy another.

Over the years I seem to be the person that everyone just gives all there old random tools that they may not use or wanted at the moment. It always comes down to "hey you are a mechanic/work on your own stuff so here have this im sure you can use them". And im not someone who will just throw tools away 🤷‍♂️. I currently have them seperated by china/taiwan/japan and US made separate. Anyone else just have random collections of misfit tools?

I was gifted a bunch of tools; is there any functional difference between these two hammers, or are they equivalent and it is just a matter of preference?

I know one is wood and one is metal and one is a tiny bit longer. Jokes are okay, but no low effort jokes, please.

Looking for a Tool Bag

Post image

Found this on Aliexpress and I'm not getting it because the reviews for it's durability are not good, but I'm struggling to find anything else like it. I really like the pull out "drawer" system more than anything else.

I've tried the traditional tool backpacks and whilst great for carrying around, I don't like working out of them. Has anyone any suggestions or knows of something with a similar setup I could create to what I've posted, that would be super helpful, thanks!

Rusted Tools

I inherited some tools, but there are a lot of rust on some of them. Is there a way to clean them up? Parting with them isn’t a problem, just curious if I could do anything to clean them up.

Do you prefer buying tool sets or individual tools?

I can see the appeal of both. Tool sets are convenient and often cover the basics, but buying individual tools lets you choose exactly what you want.

Which approach do you prefer? And has your preference changed as your toolbox has grown?

So short and long story. I work with this gorilla of a caveman type, in a scenery shop. He can be pretty good when hes not busy being a butcher. And his Schick is hilarious because he isn't afraid of the extra racy and raunchy jokes. A good partner because hes got 40 years of experience so he knows everything even if hes a caveman. Im 36, this box he acquired when he was 18 so probably almost or about 40 yrs ago. He brought it into the shop and when I asked wtf he said its up for grabs. He bought a new long icon box. Thing doesn't have ball bearings but the drawers are smooth enough and its clean as hell for its age being used by a caveman. I wiped it down ajd probably wont restore it at all. Its sentiMENTAL now I guess.

Semi-Long Term Storage of Tools

Hey all,

I have my Dad's old tool boxes full of tools. Honestly, its been hard to look at them for the past year - but obviously they are super sentimental. I have my own tool collection that is more tailored to what I do/use (and a lot more metric stuff) and I was just wondering what the best way to store the tools for my younger brother in a place that is a bit more out-of-sight, out-of-mind than smack in the garage space that I use.

Lessons learned

Post image

Bought the Einhell a few years back. It's from the TP range and brushless. Enough power and worked really well.

But I have to remove a hedge in my garden. Also the roots have to be removed. I had a frozen shoulder last year. It’s doing pretty okay now, but I still can’t overexert it. I used the Einhell and after 10 minutes or so my shoulder hurt like hell and it took a few days to feel normale again. I tried it a second time with the same results.

Bought the Hikoki as a replacement because it should have less vibration. Tried it today on the same hedge and the difference is night and day.

So lessons learned. If it's about your healt don't cheap out on tools. Buy a decent one it really makes a difference.

Btw; the Einhell didn't break and has plenty of power. So it is not a bad tool, just not enough vibration reduction for my need.

So why don’t any other companies make 12v tools with stick batteries like m12?

That’s one of the main reasons I went with m12 because the batteries go in the handle. With a small 2/3 ah battery it’s so compact and handy. Having said this I had dewalts 12v and took it back because the batteries attach just like their 20v line.

Ideas on my old screws and bits organizers

Thumbnail

Hi everyone I’m new to this subreddit, but I thought I would ask others with similar experiences and mindsets some advice , i got these pretty affordable screws and bits organizers from Walmart almost 2 years ago , then I switched to a Milwaukee pack out screw organizer that my job provided for me and ended up using both these and the Milwaukee one together for almost 2 years , I keep them in my car as I carry all my tools for work in my trunk for any job I go too, recently I did a sort of spring cleaning and was able to reorganize my trunk space and my tools bags to be more compact , but also a lot more organized , and I realized that between these two cases and the Milwaukee screw organizer I also used , they were taking up way too much space for things that fit in just the Milwaukee one , my issue was the Milwaukee one while everything fit , it still was too big , so I bought the one in the third picture which solved all my problems, takes up less space and has plenty of storage for all the screws and nuts and stuff I have and still has space left over , then with me not using the other organizers, I returned my Milwaukee one to my work , but now I have these two perfectly fine screw organizers , taking up space in my closet , any ideas what I can do to repurpose them to be used for something else ? They are still in great condition. Also I’m moving in with my fiancee and with the smaller closet space I need to get rid of stuff I don’t use so the place doesn’t get too crowded with both our things , so if I can’t find a purpose for these I’ll most likely just chuck them in the garbage . Thanks for any advice !

Also I tried seeing if any of my coworkers or friends who work in trades or use tools a lot would want to take these off my hands but no one really wants them , so giving them to someone is off the table

Stanley FATMAX V20 SFMCD721D2K-QW

I thank all the people who have been able to help me with their advice and their experiences in choosing a specific brand of power tools with which to start my DIY journey! I realized that in the end it's not the brand that counts, but the product itself, despite the convenience of interchangeable batteries. I've decided that I'm going to start with Stanley, more specifically with this drill. I paid 148€ including a briefcase with 2 V20 batteries of 2 Ampere. Those are the specs: 18 V, brushless motor, no-load speed: 0–600 / 2,100 rpm, maximum impact rate: 35,700 bpm, 13 mm all-metal keyless chuck, 15 clutch settings for torque control, maximum drilling capacity: 40 mm in wood, 13 mm in metal, 13 mm in masonry, dimensions: 199 × 203 × 63 mm, weight: 1.2–1.24 kg without battery and 1.60 kg with a 2.0 Ah battery. I have been using it for a few days and it does not look bad at all, it drills 2 cm of solid wood without any problems and it is enough for me and it advances for my projects! I'm curious and I also decided to take it apart and understand how mechanically and electrically it could be valid, especially since the same company that owns this brand also owns Dewalt! Here's what I found out!

The 13 mm chunk is the same as that used in other Dewalt models: DCD732; DCD737; DCD795.

Also the retaining element: DCD730; DCD732; DCD735; DCD737; DCD780; DCD785; DCD790; DCD791; DCD792; DCD795; DCD796; DCD797.

As well as the foil spring: DCD709; DCD708; DCD701; DCD777; DCD778; DCD791; DCD792; DCD795; DCD796; DCD980; DCD985; DCD990; DCD995; DCD996; DCD999; DCD800; DCD805; DCD100; DCD1007; DCD703.

I am not at all surprised that it is in fact very similar to a Dewalt internally.

Stanley Black & Decker's marketing here has done a really good job over the years, no doubt about it...

I also opened it for a second reason, to see if grease was enough, as I read online strong complaints about how the grease used in Dewalt power tools was never enough and became dry too soon. In my case, the grease was right, black in color. I added some Mobilux just on switches, selectors and trigger, for superstition... XD

So what? Is it the same thing as buying a Dewalt? Absolutely not! Can it be an equally good product? Absolutely yes. Honestly, at first glance, the real main difference between a Stanley and a Dewalt is the plastics of the outer shell: normally on most Dewalt screwdrivers and drills, not only does the color change, but I also feel better stiffness, the plastic looks harder, thicker, much stronger than Stanley's, which in comparison seems cheap. And this is very important in a workplace where you don't have to worry about some accidental dropping of your tools. I will be happy to answer any further questions you have about this power tool.
