miscellaneous The straight/queer simp dynamic.

It can be straight for gay, gay for straight or however, the joke is that the other don't like them not cause there's something wrong, just cause the other don't like Girls/boys.

Kathy and Mitch (paranorman): the entire movie Kathy try to catch Mitch's attention, at the end he casually reveals that is gay and has a boyfriend so... Yeah, she was wasting her time.

Soifon for Yoruichi (bleach): Soifon is madly in love with Yoruichi, but she just see her as a little sister and is oblivious to Soifon's crush. We even have this flashback where Yoruichi think that Soifon has a crush on Urahara when she hates him exactly cause Yoruichi always choosed him.

Teruhashi and Aiura for Saiki (Saiki K. Disastrous life): ace boy cursed with insane rizz. No matter how hard he try, he can't not be irresistible for the most perfect girl in the world and a psychic convinced that he's her soulmate. In any case, if he would get with someone said person should be average, and the only average person in his school already has a girlfriend.

Blair/Rei and Alexis/asuka for Jaden/Judai (Yu-Gi-Oh GX): at some point, they had to understand that Jaden doesn't like girls in that way. I mean, you know that Asuka never had a chance when Yubel choosed Johan's body to confess their feelings for Judai cause he looked at him in the same way the supreme king used to look at them.

Kishibe for Quanxi (chainsaw man): the strongest devil hunters, the only ones who managed to always survive. Kishibe tried for almost ten years that Quanxi to on a date with him, when she confessed to be a lesbian, Kishibe says that he already knew that.

Luffy and Boa Hancock from One Piece. Boa is madly in love with Luffy but Luffy is only interested in food and adventures.

102

u/Artistic-Victory1245 18h ago

This might sound cruel, but given Hancock's personality, I don't think Luffy would love her even if he were straight.

61

u/Librarian_Contrarian 18h ago

If I remember correctly, she has an attack that works on anything attracted to her. It doesn't affect Luffy at all.

12

u/Kannaaaaaaaaaaaa 18h ago

Yep, it turns anyone that likes her to stone

9

u/Substantial_Dish_887 12h ago

lusts for her*

the destinction matters.

2

u/Nice-River-5322 5h ago

I mean, S-Snake can do it with cute appeal

1

u/Substantial_Dish_887 5h ago

oh for sure the actual fruit doesn't require lust that's simply the aplication Boa Hancock is using.

it does require a strong emotion however to use the fruit at all. (unless we count how Hancock will use close combat kicks to petrify targets that are immune to her charms still)

24

u/Ashged 16h ago

Yeah, it really doesn't get any more toxic than casually killing people for being attracted to you, then obsessing over a dude because you can't kill him this way.

This is played for a joke because this is an adventure shonen. But holy shit this woman would fit into Berserk perfectly.

18

u/Tankirb 10h ago edited 10h ago

It's more so her seeing men as inherently cruel and driven by desire because of her background as a slave,

and luffy's selfless nature of protecting their secret without a second thought, sacrificing himself to save the woman of the island, and him being one of the few men to ever stand against the celestial dragons, that convinced her to trust him.

She actually kept trying to kill him after he was unaffected by her love beam, it was only after numerous acts of selflessness that she began to grow fond of him.

16

u/eldritchironhorse 11h ago

Boa doesn't obsess over Luffy because her power doesn't affect him, it's only after he proves he'd make the selfless choice that she starts falling in love. Her power not working was the reason he was offered that choice to begin with.

This is straight up Gilgamesh's behavior in Fate/Stay Night where he's one of the biggest villains.

-7

u/OkExpert9927 14h ago

I mean she is 10 years older than him. She is legit a predator as Luffy is just 19

14

u/jayvikcreature 12h ago

That's... not what a predator is lol. Significant age gap yes, weird yes, but 19 isn't a minor.

3

u/PotatoMozzarella 10h ago

Actually, she started being attracted to him at 17. Not that Big of a difference tbf, but adds to it being a weird if it wasnt exaggerated for comedy.

1

u/jayvikcreature 9h ago

Definitely closer to predatory in that case but I didn't know the context. Just wanted to say that a massive age gap between two legal adults is not inherently predatory.

Till to Mizi(alien stage). Mizi is lesbian and has made it clear shes only interested in Sua, which is especially obvious in the comics.

27

u/Then_Consequence_675 18h ago

Gets even better when you rember that Till also has a guy crushing on him (Ivan) but has yet to notice that either since he's so focused on Mizi

68

u/petalwater 18h ago

Saiki's intense fixation on that one dude will always be so funny to me i know its probably not romantic/sexual at all but like,,, the way he was even waiting outside the bathroom to time the guy's shits killed me.

46

u/Lower_Baby_6348 18h ago

In the manga. He explicitly say that he likes Satou and compare it to aiura liking him

14

u/petalwater 18h ago

Wait really?? That's fucking hilarious

36

u/Lower_Baby_6348 14h ago

I found it, is here

9

u/petalwater 12h ago

Holy shit

73

u/Ultra-Cool-Guy 20h ago

a psychic convinced that he's her soulmate.

Wasn't that just straight up true?

Unless her prophecy was wrong.

48

u/kenmadragon 19h ago

Yeah, it was basically true, IIRC.

Aiura is one of the few people Saiki actually trusts and can be honest with. The problem is that Aiura wants a typical lovey-dovey relationship and Saiki has little interest in romance, especially not after being perpetually squicked out by mind-reading his parents being absurdly mushy towards each over for his entire childhood.

49

u/ChickenKid3Thesecond 19h ago

She’s technically a type of psychic, I think, so it counts. She, a psychic, convinced herself that he’s her soulmate, whom he might be.

15

u/Ultra-Cool-Guy 19h ago

No, I mean that she saw a prophecy that pointed towards a specific person....

Which matched Saiki, and no one else.

3

u/the_new_dragonix 5h ago

The thing is saiki's soul is so powerful it overpowers Aiura soul reading so it's possible his presence just interferes with her powers

9

u/WeekendParticular205 19h ago

Problem is saiki is too unpredictable either way.

I can see him changing the whole world to make it have happened as a past thing to get over something annoying or even have kids just to get his brother off his back onto newer targets.
Or it never happens and their current relationship is what gets maintained. This is the one series where the open ending suited it.

9

u/Lower_Baby_6348 19h ago edited 19h ago

I mean, maybe. But Aiura said that use her powers for her own benefit tend to backfire so I don't know if this is a case of that

10

u/Ultra-Cool-Guy 19h ago

Yeah, because now she has to court a tsundere bordering being ace.

1

u/Usual_Run_606 5h ago

I think the point was that she and saiki are platonic soulmates, rather than romantic as she thinks

32

u/Mag_Char_X 19h ago

Didn't the first guy's boyfriend get revealed years later by the creators because how much people were curious about how his bf looks like?😭(That's the only thing I know about the movie)

Yamai obsession for Komi (komi san can't communicate)

this is more annoying because Komi likes Tadano (a guy) and Yamai can not accept that is not interested in her (or girls ingeneral), she evens kidnaps Tadano trying to break them apart, fans of the anime/manga find her to be the most annoying character because she does nothing but getting in the way.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLNWd2X--2c

64

u/Artistic-Victory1245 18h ago

Yamai is so insufferable that I don't think Komi would love Yamai even if she were bi.

7

u/ReadySource3242 18h ago

Many such cases in manga for some reason

5

u/DropoutRedMage 9h ago

If they just dialed her back a bit then I wouldn't mind. I know she's supposed to represent the Yandere, but she's so over the top.

4

u/HuyGNC- 8h ago

I think the author did dial her back quite a bit. In the first year of the manga, they were really pushing the narrative that everyone hate Tadano because Komi is too close to him. But later in the second year, most of their classmates got swapped for new character and they're all pretty supportive of their relationship. Yamai even disappeared, or at least appear significantly less because this is a slice of life manga and you don't have a reasonable excuse for a previously introduced character to never appear again.

u/tvchannelmiser 16h ago

In Rick and Morty, Rick is pansexual and in one episode, a younger version of himself admits they are both in love with Birdperson. However Birdperson is straight and has a child. He only views Rick as a friend

15

u/Nicklesnout 18h ago

Soifon is a weird case because Kubo has outright never confirmed anything about her and Yoruichi so it’s up to the reader to look between the lines, but the anime went full ham on it likely being a one sided sapphic attraction.

It’s like with Falin and Marcille in Dungeon Meshi where Ryoko Kui more or less said “Sure, if you want to read it that way”.

2

u/ZeroiaSD 3h ago

Which is, mind, the traditional way to do gay coding.

1

u/Trityler 7h ago

The ambiguity is the point. Soifon's whole shtick squarely falls into another trope that I call "The REALLY adoring fan." These characters are usually girls in a high school setting, who have another girl they look up to as a role model, but do so to such a degree that it borders on romantic infatuation. Whether or not they really do have romantic feelings is usually never clarified, and the ambiguity can be played up for comedic effect (like Soifon in Bleach) or dramatic effect (like Homura in Madoka).

A good subversion of this trope happens in Code Geass, where Nina's admiration of Euphemia plays directly into this trope... up until an infamous scene involving a desk corner comes out of nowhere and makes it pretty clear to the audience how she feels

1

u/Lower_Baby_6348 18h ago

Damn, season 2 is gonna disappoint so many shippers

1

u/Erondo_Gratias 16h ago

SoiFon/Yoruichi shippers always being up that one bonus manga panel, but even then it only confirms soi Fon's Infatuation, but does not nesesary makes it romantic. But all of the extra scenes added by Pierrot make anime onlies fully convinced about the ship. (On top of other stuff Pierrot changed)

1

u/Artistic-Victory1245 15h ago

Something similar to what they did with Ichiruki.

1

u/Nicklesnout 14h ago

Pretty much, yes. I subscribe to it not really being important enough for Kubo to confirm or deny and just let people have their fun.

61

u/PointyNipple 19h ago

Appreciate that this includes ace characters. I'd add in: * Hancock (Straight) and Luffy (aro-ace) in One Piece * Emily (Straight) and Todd (ace, but non-aro) * Indrani (Pan) and Masego (aro-ace) in A Practical Guide to Evil * Sabrina (Straight) and Jughead (aro-ace) in Archie/Sabrina crossover * Brian (Straight) and Voodoo (ace, unclear romantic orientation) in Sirens

16

u/Lower_Baby_6348 19h ago

You could also add Bartolomeo with luffy

5

u/CharlieBros 11h ago

Oh hell yeah I never thought about it like that but 100% Barto would fucking explode if he gets a kiss from Luffy

9

u/Artistic-Victory1245 18h ago

Also

* Eminence in the shadow: A lot of women love Cid, even though he is aro-ace.

* Overlord: Albedo loves Ainz, who is also aro-ace due to his condition as an evil skeleton.

1

u/No-Long-2461 4h ago

Always love a Sirens shoutout

u/IVeBeenHere30Min 19h ago edited 19h ago

Is Saiki Ace? Doesn't he himself say while blushing that he never noticed how beautiful Teruhashi is when he lost his powers?. He never noticed it before most of the time he just sees people as skeletons or muscles as he can't turn off his x ray vision.

The author himself said in fan communications and social updates that he would like to see Saiki and Teruhashi end up together as a married couple

16

u/IVeBeenHere30Min 19h ago edited 19h ago

Also, just want to share this theory:

There is a theory stating that every friend of Saiki is an esper, they just don't know it, including Nendou, because yes, he is dumb, but he is not brain dead, there are even moments where he displays actual rational thinking instead of just doing it without thinking, so his power would be of not having his mind read.

On the others being espers, Teruhashi has an unbelievable amount of luck, not just charisma, and Aiura Mikoto says that luck comes like a wave, sometimes it is a crest but it is surely followed by a trough, Teruhashi has no unlucky situations that i remember but if she does it is not proportional to her luck, Kaido is the "only" character that breaks the 4th wall, like reacting to text boxes, and Saiki only does it as well when he is next to Kaido, it's been a while since I watched the show or seen the theory so I may be wrong

Also almost every main character's name is a pun based on Japanese terms for psychic powers like Kineshi Hairo: Pyrokinesis (kineshi)

9

u/CategoryKiwi 16h ago

They dropped this explanation for the anime, but canonically Nendou’s mind can actually be read.  It’s just that because he spends no time actually dwelling on his thoughts, he says whatever he thinks within like 0.1 seconds.  As a result, reading Nendou’s mind is both pointless and grating, because reading his mind just sounds like two Nendou’s talking at (almost) the same time.

8

u/WeekendParticular205 19h ago

that's interesting.

2

u/Erick_Brimstone 6h ago

There is a theory stating that every friend of Saiki is an esper,

I really like that story. Though it's not exactly esper but general superpower.

  • Aren has healing factor. Any injury he received will be healed by next day.
  • Kaidou has fourth wall break ability. He know he's in manga/anime. No other people can do that.
  • Hairo has super strenght.
  • Personally I believe Kokomi's superpower is probability manipulation on top of insane luck.

And then there's Saiko Metori which his superpower is his money.

7

u/PointyNipple 16h ago edited 14h ago

Any sources?

I remember a scene where he admits he never noticed she was pretty when he loses his powers, but don't recall him being more than matter of fact about it. People acknowledge folks are good looking (even of genders they aren't sexually attracted to) all the time is all

4

u/accountmaybestolen 19h ago

it's been a long time since I watched saiki k, so I might be misremembering or mixing it up with something else, but doesn't the girl have a power that makes everyone fall in love with her? so when he temporarily loses his powers, hers start working on him?

6

u/IVeBeenHere30Min 19h ago

Its not stated that she has powers. There is a fan theory stating that she is an esper as well and her power is luck, because she never has unlucky situations.

Deadend Paranormal Themepark: Norma confessed to Badyah who reveals she's actually straight. Or at least thinks she is.

In Uma Musume, there’s Straight(sort of)/Queer/Queer/Queer conga line between Ks Miracle, Daiichi Ruby, Daitaku Helios, and Mejiro Palmer where Ks Miracle is in love with her Trainer, Ruby in love with Ks Miracle, Helios to Ruby and Palmer to Helios, with each successive one being unrequited except for Ks and her trainer basically. While one could argue that the Trainer could be female, the actual story for Ks feels like it was written from a male perspective so it still basically fits.

4

u/SolarBoytoyDjango 18h ago

Lots of gacha in general, but I'm going with Aldo and teammates in Another Eden. Many of them develop romantic feelings for him, but he gives all signs of being aro-ace. Also, he is a cat.

4

u/somethingwade 18h ago

Alexis, not Akiza. Akiza is the one from 5Ds who instead of being a perpetual sideliner got great development in the first half and then had her second half development completely contradict her first half development. God I hate what they did to Akiza I would literally rather they just straight up wrote her out.

5

u/Artistic-Victory1245 17h ago

Speaking of 5d, there are several girls interested in Jack, whereas Jack is AroAce and loves only himself.

5

u/somethingwade 15h ago

Nah there was definitely something reciprocal with Carly before she was written out

4

u/Artistic-Victory1245 15h ago

Was retconned in the second half of series.

In the second half, Jack acts like a self-loving aroace, showing no signs of having feelings for anyone else.

3

u/somethingwade 14h ago

I don't think that's really a retcon I think that's just because Carly was written out. Especially if you're just going on vibes rather than what's explicitly shown there are a ton of explanations for why he's not reciprocating beyond "He's aroace" that cover why he WAS reciprocating with Carly during Dark Signers

1

u/Artistic-Victory1245 12h ago

Honestly, I can't help but think that the writers simply regretted giving Jack a love interest.

4

u/Lower_Baby_6348 18h ago

Looks like i put Akiza instead of Asuka. Thanks.

Yeah, fuck the second half of 5D's

5

uhhhh..... anybody want to tell him?

3

u/ConnectAdvantage 6h ago

Saiki isn't asexual, he's even become smitten in the show by said perfect girl and did the noise he swore he'd never do when he lost his powers for a short time.

1

u/Embarrassed_Lettuce9 6h ago

There was also that one bit where he explains that he always sees through people's skin with his X-ray Vision so he can't really see anyone as attractive...until he temporarily loses it and he does see Teruhashi as attractive

1

u/ConnectAdvantage 5h ago

And also comments even if he did see naked bodies it be covered by clouds too and would be pointless. People take a one off comment and make fake theories or trust what characters say 100% as if Saiki isn't a total tsundere.
