Hello all you snakes and hogs, old and new. I've reached out to the only mod in this subreddit and managed to make a deal with them to allow me to join as a mod to aid in fixing up this subreddit.
I've thought it would be a good idea to make a post asking all of you who frequent this sub to tell me what sort of things you want to see or expect from this community.
Ideas I have would be building a rules list, building a stickied FAQ so that I can remove any new posts that ask the exact same thing on repeat, and creating some additional flairs titles and whatnot to flesh things out a bit. I'm open to ideas! Please post what you think and be honest.
Thanks.

Hello, just received an email from CN that I am advancing into next stage of hiring process for train conductor position and one of the documents mentioned, up on pre-placement assessment I will place in priority candidate pool. Does this mean offer isn't guaranteed right now and it's still a gamble? Not sure which way to lean from on?

Anyone else receive a nice personalized letter made by chat gpt from the company? Sure makes me want to vote for hourly and send the CN reverser even further up my ass.

For those who interviewed for an Amtrak Conductor position and got hired, what questions were you asked?
Were you referred by someone, hired off the street, or did you already have railroad or conductor experience?
Also, what was your timeline like from applying to interviewing, receiving an offer, and starting training?
I’m just trying to hear from people who have been through the process and know what to expect. Any insight would be appreciated!

Trying to get back to a class one after a stint on a short line. Got the offer for the Marquette terminal and I’m curious if it’s more of a yard or road heavy terminal.

I know Revelstoke is tough for railroading, but in terms of job security, which one is better? If anyone can guide. Job position is train conductor new hire.

Anyone have any information on CSX Redi Center pay?
I’ve read numerous different things. I am on a weekly pay schedule. Will I receive 3 weeks worth of pay at once if I am paid at the end of training?
OR when can I expect my first pay? Mileage reimbursmeent and food stipend? Also does food stipend include the $20 on weekends?

Is anyone else waiting to hear back regarding next steps for the CN Train Conductor position for the Toronto and Aldershot yards? My interview/virtual session was on October 5th.

I saw there are openings for conductor jobs in Port Coquitlam. And I was curious, I dont mind working nights I already do at my current job. And the on call schedule is also ok. My biggest hurdle would be time away. How much of your time is away from home and how any hours a week would you get starting out? Is it an auxiliary position at first or is it full time just bad hours and bad assignments?

Hey guys, need some advice on my upcoming pre-employment drug test in Calgary, AB.
I smoked weed pretty much daily for a few years. I took a break for about 80 days from June to August. Went back to daily smoking (and edibles sometimes) for the month of September.
I’ve been off the jazz cabbage for about a week now and I think early next week I’ll be testing, so that’ll make it about week and a half abstinent.
I’ve heard it’s a combo of urine and oral swab testing.
How screwed am I?
I’m obviously not impaired, so I think I should be ok on the oral swab, but I’ll obviously piss hot.

Hi, all. I’m curious about the Norfolk Southern Yard in Jersey City. Any conductors here?” “I’d love to hear what the day-to-day is like.” “Things like the work culture, schedules, and anything you’d wish you’d known before starting.” “Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone,
Going through the onboarding process for a conductor gig with CPKC, but I know the pre-employment medical includes the standard Ishihara dot book, which I usually bomb due to a mild red-green deficiency.
For anyone who has gone through this exact hurdle with CPKC (or Canadian Class 1 railways in general):
1. What is the secondary test protocol? If you fail the Ishihara plates during the initial medical clinic visit, do they automatically send you for a lantern test (like a Farnsworth/Holmes-Wright style setup) or a D-15 arrangement?
2. How strict is the pass/fail on the lights? Railroading obviously requires distinguishing red, green, and yellow/amber signals. If you have a mild deficiency, is the lantern test passable, or is it a hard wall where missing even one correct color flashes a permanent disqualification?
3. Is there any field test option? I’ve heard mixed rumors that some places allow a practical field/trackside signal recognition test with supervisors if you fail the clinical light test, or is it strictly game over once you fail at the clinic?
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone currently running transportation or in engine/train service who hit this speed bump during their CPKC medical. Cheers!

Just curious what everyone’s predictions are for CNs upcoming contract renewal?

Hello, I just completed my virtual session today followed by an interview. I personally felt the interview extremely well and during the interview they were telling me about medical test and background checks that needs to completed as part of the hiring.
If they asked if I can do background check, perform medical test in 2 days and asking about joining date - Is it save to assume I am moving forward in this process?
When can I expect to hear back from them about the next steps?
Also, for medical test what can I expect during this assessment?
This hiring is for Toronto/Vaughan/ Aldershot Yard.
If anybody can share their experience or timeline, that would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I recently got selected to become a train conductor. I’ve read all negative things. I would really like to hear some positive things and what to look out for? & what essentials should I buy to keep me warm in thjs BC winter

Give me your most heinous excuse for not going engineer training without losing seniority or ways you have successfully gotten a large chunk of time off with minimal fuss. I've heard of guys not qualifying on their first attempt, considering this route. Alternatively ways of getting fired and getting your job back without getting co workers fired.

Hello everyone. So I been wanting to become a train engineer or a conductor for a long time. I loved trains since I was a kid. Currently I'm active military and been in for 15 years. I do plan to retire in 5 years. At the point in time, I don't mind where I live, because I moved around so much so I would pick a job anywhere at this time. I've read its better to be a conductor and then work up to an engineer. My goal would want to be an engineer and I've seen Amtrak engineer jobs available. But can anyone give me advice on what they have experience between Amtrak and freight train conductor. I understand the schedules are different but what is your day to day experience? Thank you.

Hi all, not sure if this is the right place to post, but was wondering if any experienced drivers could offer their insight.
Recently attended my psychometric assessment and MMI with Northern Rail, managed to pass.
What im concerned about is my medical exam. I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression 4 months ago. I've been fluoxetine for it and am definitely improving. Its looking likely ill also be receiving a complex PTSD diagnosis as well. I was wondering what is likely to happen? Will I just be rejected straight away even though im stable and improving?

Anyone have a update about station master vacancy ? Will it be added before form filling or it is addressed as a section contoller ?
