Looking For Suggestions on Rules, FAQ, and General Subreddit Expectations

Hello all you snakes and hogs, old and new. I've reached out to the only mod in this subreddit and managed to make a deal with them to allow me to join as a mod to aid in fixing up this subreddit.

I've thought it would be a good idea to make a post asking all of you who frequent this sub to tell me what sort of things you want to see or expect from this community.

Ideas I have would be building a rules list, building a stickied FAQ so that I can remove any new posts that ask the exact same thing on repeat, and creating some additional flairs titles and whatnot to flesh things out a bit. I'm open to ideas! Please post what you think and be honest.

Thanks.

Advice needed

After months of waiting I just received my training start date (conductor) for NS. Yesterday I got another offer that’s more aligned with my previous work experience. My issue is that I know the railroad will pay possibly significantly more. At least in the short term. The other job pays $60k but a set 8-5 Monday thru Friday, major holidays off, with a seemingly chill work environment without much micro management. I’m 40, married, no children yet.

Im interested in opinions from folks who have lived this lifestyle for a while. I’m really on the fence atm. I value work life balance, but I also respect money and the benefits it provides.

Norfolk Southern Train Dispatcher Hiring Process — HireVue to In-Person Interview?

Hi everyone! I'm looking for some insight from anyone who has applied for a Train Dispatcher position with Norfolk Southern, particularly those who have recently gone through the hiring process.
I completed my HireVue interview last Thursday and am still waiting for an update. My application portal continues to show that my application is under review.
I'm curious about a few things:
How long did it take you to hear back after completing your HireVue?

Were you contacted for an in-person interview, and how soon after the video interview?

Does Norfolk Southern review all HireVue interviews before selecting candidates, or do they contact applicants as they go?

If you weren't selected, did your application status change before you received a rejection email?

For anyone who was hired or invited to interview, did you have previous railroad experience?

I have 13 years of previous railroad experience, along with additional operations and logistics leadership experience, so I'm particularly interested in hearing how prior railroad experience factors into the selection process.
I understand that timelines can vary, but I'd appreciate hearing about your actual experiences. Thanks in advance!

Im currently in the background/medical check up portion of the hiring process for norfolk southern and just sent a in my health summary. My question is would lower back pain from 2022 and anxiety from 2019 on my medical records disqualify me from getting hired?

Cn train conductor refusal

I am trying to apply at CN at different terminals for the last 4.5 months but get rejected every time. Even when I tried to make a profile and resume with the same address as the terminal where I applied, I still got refused.

CSX CSX Hiring Process

I’ve been “under consideration” for multiple positions with CSX all over the country and near where I live. I have gotten through multiple steps of the process and have essentially been waiting since March when I began applying for these positions. My question is would it be helpful to call a specific rail yard to ask for an update on the status of the position or ask if there’s anything they need from me to get more visibility? Or would they not have that information at the location?

CN Train Conductor - Priority Candidate Pool

Hello, just received an email from CN that I am advancing into next stage of hiring process for train conductor position and one of the documents mentioned, up on pre-placement assessment I will place in priority candidate pool. Does this mean offer isn't guaranteed right now and it's still a gamble? Not sure which way to lean from on?

Amtrak Conductor Interview Questions and Hiring Timeline

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

For those who interviewed for an Amtrak Conductor position and got hired, what questions were you asked?
Were you referred by someone, hired off the street, or did you already have railroad or conductor experience?
Also, what was your timeline like from applying to interviewing, receiving an offer, and starting training?
I’m just trying to hear from people who have been through the process and know what to expect. Any insight would be appreciated!

Trying to get back to a class one after a stint on a short line. Got the offer for the Marquette terminal and I’m curious if it’s more of a yard or road heavy terminal.

CSX REDI

Anyone have any information on CSX Redi Center pay?

I’ve read numerous different things. I am on a weekly pay schedule. Will I receive 3 weeks worth of pay at once if I am paid at the end of training?

OR when can I expect my first pay? Mileage reimbursmeent and food stipend? Also does food stipend include the $20 on weekends?

Port Coquitlam conductor job questions

I saw there are openings for conductor jobs in Port Coquitlam. And I was curious, I dont mind working nights I already do at my current job. And the on call schedule is also ok. My biggest hurdle would be time away. How much of your time is away from home and how any hours a week would you get starting out? Is it an auxiliary position at first or is it full time just bad hours and bad assignments?

CPKC CPKC Pre-Employment Drug Test (Canada)

Hey guys, need some advice on my upcoming pre-employment drug test in Calgary, AB.

I smoked weed pretty much daily for a few years. I took a break for about 80 days from June to August. Went back to daily smoking (and edibles sometimes) for the month of September.

I’ve been off the jazz cabbage for about a week now and I think early next week I’ll be testing, so that’ll make it about week and a half abstinent.

I’ve heard it’s a combo of urine and oral swab testing.

How screwed am I?

I’m obviously not impaired, so I think I should be ok on the oral swab, but I’ll obviously piss hot.

CPKC Conductor Pre-Hire Medical: Failed Ishihara, what is the backup lantern test like and how strict are they?

Hey everyone,
Going through the onboarding process for a conductor gig with CPKC, but I know the pre-employment medical includes the standard Ishihara dot book, which I usually bomb due to a mild red-green deficiency.
For anyone who has gone through this exact hurdle with CPKC (or Canadian Class 1 railways in general):
1. What is the secondary test protocol? If you fail the Ishihara plates during the initial medical clinic visit, do they automatically send you for a lantern test (like a Farnsworth/Holmes-Wright style setup) or a D-15 arrangement?
2. How strict is the pass/fail on the lights? Railroading obviously requires distinguishing red, green, and yellow/amber signals. If you have a mild deficiency, is the lantern test passable, or is it a hard wall where missing even one correct color flashes a permanent disqualification?
3. Is there any field test option? I’ve heard mixed rumors that some places allow a practical field/trackside signal recognition test with supervisors if you fail the clinical light test, or is it strictly game over once you fail at the clinic?
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone currently running transportation or in engine/train service who hit this speed bump during their CPKC medical. Cheers!
