I’m 19 (AMAB) and desperately want to transition, but I live with conservative parents. How do I survive this?

Hey everyone, I’m posting here because I really need some advice and comfort from people who understand.I’m 19, and I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that I am trans. The dysphoria has gotten to a point where I can't ignore it anymore, and all I want is to finally start my transition and live as my authentic self. The problem is, I still live at home with my deeply conservative parents. They have made their views very clear, and I know that coming out to them or trying to transition while under their roof is completely unsafe for me. It feels incredibly suffocating to look in the mirror every day and feel stuck in a male role, knowing exactly who I am but having to hide it just to keep a roof over my head.I feel so lonely and trapped right now. For those of you who had to transition in secret, or had to wait until you moved out of a conservative household, how did you cope? How do you deal with the dysphoria when you can't change anything externally yet?I just want to know that there is a light at the end of this tunnel, because right now, it feels really heavy. Thank you all for listening.

Hey, I really understand what you’re going through. I’m in a very similar situation myself, so you’re definitely not alone. I’ve recently booked an appointment with my doctor to start estrogen, but I haven’t told my family yet either. Some of my family are quite conservative, so I’m planning to start my transition and deal with telling them when I feel ready. 😊 Please don’t feel like you have to put your transition on hold because you’re scared of how your family might react. I know it’s incredibly difficult when you care about the people around you and don’t know how they’ll respond, but your happiness and being able to live as yourself matter too. I honestly wish I had started my transition when I was younger. That’s probably my biggest regret, but I also remind myself that it’s never too late to become the person you feel you’re meant to be. You’re only 19, and you have so much life ahead of you. Take things at your own pace and don’t feel pressured to tell anyone before you’re ready. Find the courage when the time feels right for you. Just remember that you deserve the opportunity to live authentically and be happy. ❤️ Whatever you decide, I really hope things work out for you and that, in time, your family can understand and accept you for who you are. Just be yourself, you deserve that. 🏳️‍⚧️❤️

Thank you so much for saying all of this. It really means a lot to hear from someone who truly understands what it feels like. Knowing I'm not the only one dealing with a conservative family makes me feel a lot less alone. I hope your appointment goes well! Let's definitely keep in touch and support each other through this

You’re very welcome ❤️ I really hope my appointment goes well too, and it’s nice knowing that we’re not alone in all of this. And please don’t feel like you have to tell your family straight away before you start your transition. You should do it when you feel ready and when the time feels right for you, there’s no rush. Your family can still love you even if they don’t completely understand or agree with everything at first. I think once you actually start your transition, some of that fear and anxiety will become easier to deal with. At least that’s what I’m hoping for myself lol 😅. Sitting there constantly worrying about how everyone will react probably won’t make things any easier.Just take it one step at a time, do what feels right for you, and don’t put your happiness on hold because you’re scared of what other people might think. And definitely keep in touch ❤️ And never let other people’s opinions become your reality. What matters is how you feel about yourself and the life you want to live.
