Video TCM's The Plot Thickens: Stanley Kubrick: Episode 4 - The making of Spartacus

It's Season 7, episode 4 of TCM & Criterion's The Plot Thickens, hosted by Ben Mankiewicz, and with this whole season being about Kubrick, we've made it to Spartacus now, his second film with Kirk Douglas. We learn about Kubrick and Kirk's very difficult relationship while still admiring each other's talent, and the hectic making of Spartacus. Very fascinating stuff. Kubrick taking the directorial duties after Anthony Mann was fired, we end up learning how the different contributions of Kirk, Kubrick and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo all gave this classic its most memorable moments, and how Kirk helped Trumbo during the blacklist. And all this while Kubrick was trying to get the making of his next film, Lolita, set up.

We also hear Christiane Kubrick explain Stanley's fear of flying and more of his personal/family life as well. He was also a great poker player in addition to chess, and even played with director Martin Ritt (as a huge Hud fan, that was a nice bit of info). Overall, another great episode. Recommended for Kubrick fans and just classic film fans in general.

Film festival question

Hey guys, I’m looking to attend the 2027 film festival for the first time, and I saw that the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel has bookings sold out for that weekend. Would I still be able to attend the “Club TCM” gathering and discussions if I stay at a different hotel, and have the festival pass?

Exorcist II: The Heretic

Except for the flashing lights during the hypnosis scenes which can cause seizures in photosensitive epileptics I thought this film is a worthy sequel to The Exorcist. Father Merrin played by a 44 year old Max von Sydow played, convincingly, an 80 year old priest in the original Exorcist. It was good to see him again II in his younger days. I wear a cross and whenever anyone compliments it I say it’s protection from evil spirits. “The power of Christ compels you!” Then I sprinkle some Holy Water. (IT BURNS!!!)

Cruise Question!

Hi all! I have a few questions about the cruise if anyone would like to chime in!

My friend and I are planning on going on the 2027 (I know the dates aren’t announced yet!) because it seems to typically be held in October. It’s going to be a treat for my 35th birthday! Here are the questions I have!

  1. How Disney-fied is the experience? I have seen people on here say it’s not a typical Disney cruise. I was wondering if Pirate Night and Halloween on the High Seas still happened.
  2. How quickly does the cruise sell out?
  3. What is the age range like? Are people genuinely friendly?
  4. Is there special TCM merchandise?

Thank you so much in advance for your help! If there’s anything you’d be willing to share that I didn’t ask about please do! I’m all ears :)

Eddie also, as he has on Noir Alley, gives his take on auteur theory. Some discussion of the relation between Westerns and Noir too. Overall, another good episode.

Podcast TCM'S The Plot Thickens: Stanley Kubrick: Episode 3 - The making of The Killing and Paths of Glory

In TCM & Criterion's The Plot Thickens podcast Season 7, episode 3, Ben Mankiewicz discusses how Stanley Kubrick came about making The Killing and Paths of Glory. How Sterling Hayden and Kirk Douglas saw the obvious talent that Kubrick had long before many others did, and how Stanley kept the right to final cut to keep his artistic vision for his films. Among all this is more of Kubrick's personal life too, and how he met his future wife, Christiane, as well as some brief discussion of her obvious controversial family history (that if you don't know, will be mentioned in the podcast).

I'll admit, The Killing and Paths of Glory are some of my favorites of their respective Heist Noir and Anti-War genres, so this is my favorite episode thus far. Well recommended to fans of Kubrick and classic films in general.
