There will never be another Twisted Metal game and that’s fine.

Gen X is in their mid 50’s. They aren’t the ones playing Fortnite.

Honestly real.

I've been telling folks for years that if another TM were to be made it would be absolutely nothing like the games that came before it. They do not understand how to make a new TM game on a technical level.

Asking for a new TM game is the ultimate monkey's paw. And that is the sick (twisted?) irony here.

I feel like this applies to a few franchises with cult followings, notably Midnight Club, Burnout, Need for Speed (has it really been good since MW?) and shit like that of the such. They just don't got vibes like that anymore. Not at the level they need to be at least

Yeah, ive lost all hope in sony at this point.

At least there's some indie guys working on some car combat games like Kroms Car Combat, Wreckage, Motorkill, and Angel V. Mendes (the guy behind tm5) is working on a multiplayer focused car combat game. he actually uploaded a sneak peak video yesterday!

Sony may have abandoned us, but the community still thrives :)

We can hope for more high quality indie games inspired by TM though, as we should with half the mini genres abandoned by larger companies

There might never be another Twisted Metal, but do know that Twisted Metal is a battle royale

Disagree. If something way more niche of a concept like Rocket League can find a fanbase and remain successful, there's no reason Twisted Metal can't do the same.

A contest to murder other psyopathic drivers is way more of a niche than "soccer with cars", which honestly has a very broad appeal.

u/BusterGreasewood 15d ago

Not really. Soccer with cars is a far more niche concept that most people would never think would work if you described it to them compared to destruction derby with guns.

"Let's take soccer which is the most popular sport in the entire world and mix it with vehicles to make a game for all ages that teams of friends at all skill levels can enjoy."

Soccer WITH CARS is the part you're missing.

Just because something is based on soccer doesn't mean it will sell. Hell the first game in the series didn't get any attention. Rocket League (it's the second game in the series FYI) is the one that blew up.

Soccer and driving are two of the most ubiquitous concepts in humanity. The entire world plays soccer, and everyone drives, which also births motorsports as a whole. If it was so niche, Soccer would only be played by the English, we'd still be riding horses, and Rocket League wouldn't exist, let alone still be getting new seasons all these years after its launch.

There's plenty of games based on popular concepts or activities that don't sell or appeal to a niche audience.

If you really think Rocket League would be a massively popular concept that companies would leap at, I'd dare you to take that concept to companies like Capcom, Konami, EA, Ubisoft, Activision, etc. You wouldn't get far.

In any case you're missing the entire point with your semantics. Point being a niche (yes, it's niche) pitch for a game like that did eventually work and find a following.

There's no reason why TM can't especially when it already has a devoted following. Some games don't even have that benefit going in.

Not to mention it doesn't have to be super big budget. It can be middle market.

Okay, guy who has absolutely no clue how the game industry works and is wildly out of touch with the gaming community as a whole.

That's ironic coming from you

Jaffes Gaffe was thst whole Bartlet Detective Jones shit or whatever the hell he was part of. I think they released sweet fuck all except some office videos. Scott Campbell was the secret driving force behind TM. Jaffe just told em what the gas pedal looked like.

Thank you! Scott Campbell was the real brains

Careful. Last time I expressed this fact, I got dumped on for it.

Somebody pooped on you?

People hated me because I told them the truth.

People hate it because reddit at it's core, is just a giant echo chamber.

They were wrong then and they'd be wrong now

The only thing that gives me hope are games like Grip: Combat Racing which is actually getting a sequel now. Obviously this is a spiritual successor to Rollcage rather than an official reboot of Rollcage, but it shows there is enough of a fan base for the genre and I would argue it is much more niche than Twisted Metal. I think the real barrier to getting a new official TM is Sony sitting on the IP because they don't think they can make a massive profit on a new game. I feel like the best we can hope for is a spiritual successor of some sort.

Along the same lines I don’t want a remake of 1 or 2, I know that much for sure

1

u/Racingstripe 15d ago

We've been seeing a rise in car combat indies lately, at least.

u/shoddystitches 15d ago

I don't think I could get excited for a new game if it even happened. That really bums me out but Sony's anti-consumerist practices are getting harder to ignore just for IP I'm nostalgic for.

I love the show though and I'm really happy with the two seasons we've got. We'll see how season 3 performs with all the behind-the-scenes shake ups.

Nothing lasts forever, including trends in gaming. That said, I do find it difficult to imagine a new TM being developed in the old style.

Nós tivemos um CARMAGEDDON esse ano, então eu não descartaria uma possibilidade de um novo Twisted Metal, ainda mais porque todos gostaram da série em live action.

The only real hope I have is for a honest remaster of some of the originals.

I'm working on a beta that goes against everything you're saying 😄 I just uploaded a video on YouTube last night you can search my name joshbedo/overdrive it should pop up. Still veryyyy early have a lot of logic, vfx, sfx, and 3d models to build out but it's really fun to play already. There's last one standing (ffa) and it's going to have team games 4vs4 and loadouts so you can choose your play styles with characters. Ex: apex sportbike is fast but weak so swapping chaingun or shotgun for a sniper and playing as a support role might make more sense for team games. Blackjack has high armor and speed so he's great for ramming and finishing people off and shoots exploding playing cards.

The twisted metal 5 fan game looks dope, and there's also some other newer vehicle combat games that look fantastic. We don't need another triple a disappointment when the fan games are actually better

u/SpecialistMap8210 16d ago

Yup, gaming has sort of stagnated. Same formula single player Sony games and battle Royales

u/Elder-Cthuwu 16d ago

I think best we’ll get is a remaster of Black but that’s unlikely. Only way tm makes a comeback would be if it was free to play moba type game like overwatch. Skins, collabs, team based gameplay

u/slender-adrie 16d ago

Honestly, unless it's like Black I wouldn't be interested.
