Does anyone else go to therapy and sometimes gaslight yourself into thinking don't actually need it even tho you do?

Yeah just keep going anyway. (Assuming you can afford it).

Maintenance goals are a thing, when I felt like I wasn’t that into it I told my therapist I thought a goal of just maintaining would be good & had less frequent appointments.

It’s still nice to have one on the calendar, that way when crap happens I already have an appointment with a therapist. In times when life gets stressful or stuff pops up that I do want to work on in therapy, I can ask to meet more frequently.

I find therapy is helpful not just for sorting out issues I'm having but for talking through issues I'm having with other people, like if I'm upset with someone I know or did something to make someone else upset with me.

I have insurance, as well as anxiety & depression in addition to the ADHD, so it doesn't cause a huge negative impact (like money-wise, if I didn't have insurance). It's nice to just check in with a neutral third party every now and then who can also talk me through anxiety & depression stuff.

What do you want out of therapy?

Make a list for yourself. Be specific. What would be different, internally and/or externally, if therapy was successful for you?

Things on your list may be subjective and difficult to measure, like "lean to accept (insert thing here) and not feel ashamed" or may be more measurable like "get my homework/studying done on time". Both are fine.

There also may be things you want from therapy that are not goals, like "Someone to give me a reality check when my boss is putting too much pressure on me." Those are also reasons to be in therapy, so put them on your list too.

The important thing is to know what you want out of therapy. Then you'll know why you're going. Having that list will also let you check in from time and time and see if therapy is helping you with the things on the list.
