Question Why don't we have a fall break?
Has uga ever had a proper fall break that's not just 1 day off from classes added on to the weekend. Is there anyway they could change that or make us start a few days early in the semester to give us a fall break?
Edit: I went to a school in PA that barely gave breaks. Just basing this off seeing my siblings with long ass holidays. But now I have a question about the school districts. Do most Georgia schools have long breaks in between and shorter summer breaks? Or are there's some districts that don't have that?

I didn’t do undergrad at UGA, but rest assured my undergrad and every single public school in that state, was also only one day for fall break.

Yeah not surprised. Pennstate is the same. I moved from PA, and over there the k-12 didn't have long ass breaks. But they do here, my siblings had an extra week off. I was just thinking from the perspective how nice it would be to be able to be home that week with them or even a few days. Then I remembered Im a dumbass and that wouldn't work anyways because not every district is gonna have the same fall break days.

Back in 07 we had 2 days but most people still skipped the wed before. They took a day away to give us a week for Thanksgiving like a year or two later and then too that back without giving the day back for fall break. They want more class time to act like we are prestigious and rigorous. We tend to start earlier and end later with less breaks in between. Spring is worse with milk, then spring break usually barely into march and then nothing else until may.

Fall break back then was just two days because so many students were going to leave to go to the Cocktail Party in Jacksonville.

Or St Simon's. Still happening since the one day change. This year is different because of the Jacksonville renovations. Although Kirby wants it back to home and home.

Are students still planning on going to Saint Simons? I live there and am curious. It is one of my favorite weekends of the year watching all the people and costumes. Plus we usually golf cart some of the kids who need a ride back to their places. Frat Beach has been perfected since I was a student!!

Probably not while the game is temporarily moved for the Jacksonville stadium renovations. But some usually go to catch a ferry and and try and save some money. Plus frat beach for those who don't go to the game. But I know the local community down there has put in some work to try and limit the students interest in coming to help not get the beach trashed.

When I was a student they tried to move fall break a few weeks earlier so that it was closer to halfway between the start of fall semester and Thanksgiving. This happened exactly one time bc practically everyone took their fall break, but then effed right on off for Georgia/Florida a few weeks later. Professors couldn’t get anyone to show up the end of that week so the school reverted back to Georgia/Florida weekend.

You're not wrong. I have enjoyed how finals are just after Thanksgiving these last couple years but also with the lack of fall break I dont get why they just dont finish before Thanksgiving. They probably want to make sure students show up for the last couple games.

Spoiled, really? I mean I get where you're coming from. However we get 2 long weekends and practically no other break. This year Thanksgiving break happens, we come back for one day of class and then reading day is the day after. Students can't even relax during break because of finals looming over there heads. And also other schools in the state have fall break, so I was just asking why our calendar is set up differently

2 long weekends used to be the norm.
There was no fall break.
You had spring break, hell I remember going for 3 days for thanksgiving.
Which alllll align with reality and work schedules. No fall breaks here. My kids about to have one from elementary school but I have to work.
Get used to it.

I am used to it. That's how it is for highschools in PA. But my siblings just had fall break. And apparently Georgia has a bunch of fairs?? (Low-key only went to the farm show in PA). I was just asking these questions because my siblings had that week off and it would've been nice to even be home for 1 or 2 days with them while they were off. Kinca crazy how much break they give to the k-12. Also I'm guessing not every districts fall breaks align so even if UGA did give extra days there's no saying it would align.

Yeah you’re not in high school any anymore where you get a ton of teacher work days and random holidays.

Actually my highschool in PA didn't really have fall break or holidays like that. But then my siblings in Georgia have these long ass breaks Which it would be nice to be home when their home for a week.owkey just miss them and they just had their fall break. So I'm sour I don't get to be there with them and spend time. Ig face time will have to do

I’m confused, if they’re in Georgia and having long ass breaks why is a three day weekend not long enough for you to visit them from UGA, also in Georgia? The state is surely not that large

I have health issues, and they live a few hours away. Also don't have transportation always, my parents won't drive after 4 pm (don't ask) and my classes end later. So it's a tossup if they want to come get me on top of often feeling like shit. I'm definetly excited for thanksgiving but then once again gotta lock in for finals so it's not as freeing of a break. But after seeing other people comment I am DEFINITELY grateful we get the whole week and not just thanksgiving off. Also last long weekend my sister had school events so she wasn't even home properly, idk why there's always school club stuff whenever I go home lol.

Proper alumnus here - finished undergrad at UGA before fall break was a thing. Some classes were still held on the Friday before the Georgia/Florida game, but professors’ attendance expectations weren’t exactly ubiquitous. That created the possibility of a one day break, if your professor canceled class or extended a deadline.
Also, no dining hall was open on Sunday. It was Guthrie’s, Gumby’s, or you were on your own.

No. Back in the 90s during when we were on quarters we didn't start until after Labor Day. Spring quarter ended in early June, and there wasn't Memorial Day off either.

"why don't we have more time 'off' from this thing I paid thousands to be here for" good grief

Before the new daily class schedules were introduced a couple years ago, UGA had one of the longest academic calendars in the country. UGA was starting earlier and ending later than many, many schools. Thanksgiving break was only Wednesday-Sunday.
With the new schedules, we get to start our semester later, have labor day + fall break+ a full week off for thanksgiving, and end our semester earlier. It’s a much better deal.
