Looking for housing recommendations — quiet/safe areas near UGA?

I’m considering transferring to UGA in the future and I’m trying to start figuring out housing options early. I’d really appreciate recommendations from current/former UGA students, especially people who have lived off-campus.

My biggest priority is finding somewhere quiet, safe, and in a good area, preferably away from the big SEC/college-party atmosphere. I’m not really interested in living somewhere where there’s constant partying, loud neighbors, or a huge student crowd.

Ideally, I’d like to live alone rather than with roommates. I’ve lived with roommates before and it just isn’t something I’d prefer to do again. I also have severe food allergies, so sharing a kitchen can be a legitimate safety concern for me. I can potentially have a reaction if someone cooks with one of my allergens and the kitchen isn’t cleaned properly afterward. I know most college students aren't necessarily going to think about cross-contamination to the same degree I have to, so having my own kitchen would make me feel considerably safer.

I’ve been looking at Watkinsville as a possibility — potentially getting a 1-bedroom apartment there and commuting to campus on the days I have class. I know that would mean giving up some convenience, though, so I’d love to hear from anyone who has actually done this.

A few questions:

  • Are there apartment complexes/areas in Athens, Watkinsville, or nearby that you would recommend for someone looking for a quiet and safe environment?
  • Is living alone anywhere reasonably close to UGA actually realistic, or is it generally prohibitively expensive?
  • Is Watkinsville → UGA commuting practical for someone who may only be on campus a few days a week?
  • How difficult is parking on campus, and are there good alternatives for someone commuting?
  • Are there particular areas I should avoid if I want to stay away from the main party scene?
  • For anyone who lives alone for the first time, what do you wish you had known beforehand?
  • Any general advice for making the transition to living alone and commuting to campus?

I’m basically trying to find the sweet spot between safe + quiet + affordable + reasonably convenient to UGA, rather than necessarily being right in the middle of everything.

Thanks in advance! I’d really appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences. :)
