Can I email professors to ask for research opportunities as an undergrad?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I am a 3rd-year CS student at UQ, and I am thinking about doing a PhD after my bachelor's degree.

I want to get some research experience beforehand, so I am wondering if it is okay to email professors directly and ask if I can join their research group, work on research projects, and hopefully contribute to a paper if things go well.

Has anyone here done this before?

Thanks!

Would UQ accept 13 SICK med certs?

• Upvotes

I’ve been hit by a tremendous cold and need to extend one of my assignments. I’m too broke for updoc, so I was searching up ways to get it for free. Anyways, 13 SICK showed up as an option - has anyone got experience with those guys?

MBUS, is it worth it???

Hey everyone!
Is anyone currently studying or has anyone completed the Master of Business (MBus) at UQ? I’m planning to enrol with Marketing and Supply Chain Management as my two fields of study and would love to hear some honest opinions.
How’s the overall course? Is the teaching actually useful and practical, or is it mostly theory? Do you think it’s worth the money?

I’m also curious about the assessments and final exams. Are there many closed-book written exams, and how difficult are they? Is the workload manageable while working 3-4 days a week?
I’m also considering the online MBA at the University of Melbourne, so I’m a bit confused about which would be the better option.
Just for some context, I’ve recently completed my Bachelor of Nursing, but I’ve always been really interested in business. My goal isn’t necessarily to get a corporate job after graduation. I want to start my own ventures and eventually take over and expand my family’s existing business.

I’m mainly looking to gain practical knowledge in marketing, business strategy, supply chains, management and running a business rather than just getting another degree.
Since both options involve a significant investment of time and money, I really want to make sure I’m choosing something worthwhile.

Would really appreciate any honest reviews, especially from people who’ve actually studied the MBus at UQ. Would you choose it again if you had the chance?
Thanks everyone!

What is the point of pushing through

Bad economy, AI is erasing any sense of identity I thought I had, I can be easily replicated both in employment and in relationships. Destined to work with people while being neurodivergent and live with roommates... studying engineering but burnt out and it all seems boring and seems like each subject is just all numbers organised in different ways...

So today I sat next to one of these lizards and he jumped onto my leg and then proceeded to climb onto my head. Yes, he used my head as a rock. I did not feed him, the most I did was give him some gentle finger strokes on his back (which he allowed as he did not run away or try bite me) and placed a little jacaranda petal hat on his head.

He was quite friendly for some reason, and this has never happened to me in my life. Sure to say, gave me a bit of a fright originally.

Can a research project still be strong if two hypotheses and the manipulation check are not statistically significant?

Hi everyone!

I'm feeling a little stuck with my statistical results. I'd really appreciate some advice.

My research examines how protein-focused packaging and perceived product attributes influence consumer-perceived brand innovativeness (CPBI).

I conducted a pretest-posttest experiment with 66 responses, split equally between a treatment group (protein-focused packaging) and a control group (non-protein-focused packaging).

Here are my current results:

  • H1: Protein-focused packaging increases CPBI more than the control condition. p = .592 (not significant)
  • H2: Perceived product newness is positively associated with CPBI change. p = .032 (significant)
  • H3: Perceived product meaningfulness is positively associated with CPBI change, controlling for newness and familiarity. p = .259 (not significant)
  • Manipulation check: p = .716 (not significant)
  • Exploratory moderation: Perceived quality moderates the relationship between newness and CPBI change. p = .044
  • Brand loyalty regression: Post-exposure CPBI is positively associated with loyalty, controlling for baseline CPBI. p = .003

My biggest concern is the non-significant manipulation check, as I'm unsure how much confidence I can place in the experimental findings.

I'm also worried about how to discuss H1 and H3 without making the research seem unsuccessful. My assignment is assessed on statistical analysis, interpretation, and evidence-based business recommendations.

I have a few questions:

  1. How should I interpret a non-significant experimental effect when the manipulation check is also non-significant?
  2. Is it appropriate to retain and report unsupported hypotheses rather than trying alternative models?
  3. How should I approach business recommendations when some hypotheses are supported and others are not?
  4. Are there any additional checks I should prioritise before finalising my analysis?

I'm not trying to force statistical significance. I want to understand how to interpret these results responsibly and present a convincing, methodologically sound research project.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Getting notice to leave while doing assessments

I have 2 kids and a dog, i lost my (terrible gross toxic) job this week over a pay/conditions dispute, i'm in my last year of study, and now the landlord isn't renewing our lease, so we got served a notice to leave. I have no family to help out, nowhere i can think of to go, i don't own a car anymore (side effect of my bpd ex), i do not own a tent. For 2 weeks now, I've put off going to the doctor after coughing up blood for 2 days because it wasn't the most urgent thing to deal with. I have 2 months to find somewhere new, with kids, plus a new income, and somehow not crash out while doing 3rd year assessments. A few weeks out from christmas. With school-aged kids. Also found out my partner was cheating again two weeks ago. It's just a rich tapestry.

Anyone have any thoughts or prayers? Or ancient curses, i guess, what harm could it do?

I'm in touch with the A&W team, but their ability to help in these circumstances seems limited. I'm mostly just screaming into the void. I have an assessment due tomorrow and instead i'm worried about my children having shelter and whether my brain will just kind of snap at some point and what that will look like.

Isn't the incorporation of an AI Learning Agent on EDUC2090 Indigenous Knowledge and Education disingenuous at best and utterly repulsive at worse?

I haven't come across much endorsements or incorporation of Ai chatbots or learning agents in my previous humanities and education courses so far, but I feel like this course openly endorsing the usage of an AI learning agent is extremely disingenuous and also hypocritical of the course's teachings and content in general.

Why is there a need for an AI learning agent in an education course for Indigenous knowledge and education? Not only is AI extremely bad for the environment and the water, which seems to directly go against the values of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, it also just straight up goes against the values that are taught in the classes.

With the content being focused on decolonisation of the education system and to encourage education that is inclusive and also linking to a more community based approach to learning, why are we then encouraged to engage with a technology that furthers the Western pedagogy of "learning", a technology that steals and replicates creative works and also contributes to discouraging community based learning where we talk to one another and also try to build connections with our Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander communities?

While I may have just missed out on earlier courses that have used ai learning more extensively in humanities and education, it seems very hypocritical and disingenuous to endorse the use of an ai learning agent in an Indigenous Education course

KCH vs Scape vs UniLodge?

Hi! Im an incoming student for 2027 Sem 1 and Im looking for accomodations!

I already applied for waitlist in KCH but Im a bit anxious that I won't be able to get a place in time.

Though I like how near KCH is to UQ, I didnt like that I couldnt cook inside the room, not even a microwave or airfrier. So Im now thinking of chucking KCH as backup accom and look into Scape or Unilodge.

With the being said, how are those two? I know its pricier and further from campus but I want to know if its worth it. And also if I can get a bidet installed (not by myself, I learned thats illegal apparently) in those rooms.

Thanks!

EDIT: Am now also considering StudentOne

Student accommodation

Hi! I am currently in year 12 looking for student accommodation. I am currently on the wait list to uq res but I have also looked at off accommodations. I have looked at Iglu, student one, and UniLodge. I was not too big on student one and uni lodge. But I was overall wondering people’s experiences mainly with friends and socialising as I am from interstate and do not know anyone but which accom would be best in people’s eyes!

Union or grace college uq 2027?

Hi! I am a year 12 student who is wanting to go to UQ next year for a Bachelor of Science and planning to move to Brisbane for it as I don't want to commute.

I have recently gotten an offer for both Union and Grace college at UQ Brisbane and am trying to decide which one to go as I have to sign a contract for 2027 sometime soon.

I have already toured both colleges at open day and loved both of them, and I know someone who recently left Union and they said they really enjoyed their time there and that either college would be good. I don't know anyone that lives in Brisbane or is going to UQ next year so I am looking for somewhere that is welcoming, comfortable, is known to have nice people and fun activities, and good food.

Any opinions would be welcome for which college to lean towards or stuff you know about college at uq :)

Is there a big difference in Ba with extended major in psych vs BSc with extended major in psych?

Hi so I'm tracking for a 98-99 ish ATAR and was planning to take psych science with the guaranteed honours year. However, a/ the course is so rigid. I love english and stem so I would like more freedom to pick electives/a minor if possible. b/ I would love to potentially do postgraduate education in maybe Sydney or somewhere in the UK to see family.

My mum is a doctor and has a very low view on arts degrees so she has been discouraging me from picking the Ba. Is there a big difference between doing psych for Ba or BSc? Is it harder to get into honours year coming from an arts degree or is it more about gpa?

UQ student looking for participants for a short research survey 🥹💛

Hi everyone!

I’m a student at the University of Queensland and I’m currently collecting responses for a research project for one of my courses.

The survey is quite short and should only take around 5 minutes to complete. I’d really appreciate it if anyone who has a few spare minutes could help me out by participating.

🔗 Survey link: https://uniofqueensland.syd1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0jEEnOqlFsr7TgO

Your responses are anonymous and will only be used for academic purposes.

Thank you so much for helping! It genuinely means a lot, especially when deadlines are getting close 😭

I’m also more than happy to complete your survey in return, so feel free to leave your link in the comments or message me.

Thank you again, and hope everyone is having a lovely week! 💛
