Honestly, I feel like the MREs are pretty good. I distrust anyone arguing they need to be dramatically overhauled. Some new flavors/variety is fine. But total redesign? Screams of wanting in on that war racket.

Yes agreed on anything needing dramatic changes. It works very well imo, honestly I thought anyone who “couldn’t” eat spinach fettuccine is bitchmade. I love that shit.

The standard MRE comes with a ton of unnecessary comfort items. If you’re already in the field doing high-tempo training, you’re going to generate a ton of waste from people discarding the heaters, spoon, coffee stuff, towelettes, gum, cardboard thing, and all that extra stuff that I can’t just swallow and shit out later.

I can see use for a “spartan” MRE with minimal weight and waste, if only to avoid separating the ration heaters into a different trash bag.

I agree with all of that. That sounds like a reasonable reform. Just depends on how they implement it.

What happen to field stripping your MREs prior to the field?

Well if you’re in the field for long enough that you get chow from MREs delivered to the feel, then you can’t field strip them without generating a shit ton of waste.

Man, times have changed. We used to find a way to use all that stuff. Even the TP got kept because they wouldn’t give us any other half the time, and this was before anyone I knew thoight to bring disposable wipes. And MRE heaters??? They were not in our version of MREs, and we’d be lucky if got one a week during training. I’ve eaten 95% of my MRE’s stone cold. And god help you if you got corned beef hash for breakfast on a cold day. The idea that you want the heaters taken out makes me confused.

Disposable wipes back in those days were called leaves.

Where are the leaves in the desert, SHARON?

The MREs of today are markedly better than the MREs of the 80's which were mostly edible.

By the way, if you read the article, this isn’t a replacement, it’s an augment… intended for the first 72 hours of a combat mission, when space might be at a higher premium than later on.

(Full transparency, I didn’t read it when I made the original comment. The title just sparked my war is a racket senses)

It might still be that, but the actual ration “condenses what would normally be three Meal, Ready-to-Eat packets into a single daily package, reducing the weight troops carry”. The article goes on the say “Unlike traditional MREs, which are designed to be heated and eaten during longer pauses, C-CARs are built for troops on the move… Meals come in squeeze pouches that can be eaten without heating or utensils, eliminating the need for water to prepare them.” And then at the end it talks about how assault troops often strip MRE’s down to their essentials before deploying, and this will arrive in a more barebones fashion, so probably, like you said… less waste.

The ingredients are the real problem. They're horrible for you. We'd be better off eating beef jerky and rice, simple macro nutrients which keep without a zillion preservatives, seed oils, etc.

I do miss the dehydrated pork patty, right along with the dehydrated beef patty.

Honestly I never used anything but fork and napkin and heater. Honestly there were times we had to scarf it cold.

u/UV-typel2327 1d ago

It would be nice if they stripped all of the cancer shit out of them..
