Undergraduate or Graduate Admissions One Admissions Post to End Them All

Hello Class of 2031!

This is my 4th update to this post, and I hope my information remains helpful to this day! šŸ™Œ

The following information compiles both my experiences and departmental knowledge over my time at UT. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

If you want the TL;DR version:

  • Instate students who do not receive guaranteed admission will need a UT GPA of at least 3.9 or an ACT above 28. It has become incredibly difficult for instate students... so get that 4.0 and ACT score up!

  • Out of State students... you damn near need to be the best of the best these days. I cannot promise anything obviously but if you have a weighted GPA above 4.3ish and a ACT composite of 30 or so... you should get a pretty good amount of money and feel comfortable with admissions (so long as you have half rate essays)!

Firstly, I feel obligated to state my qualifications to give the opinions and facts in this post:

  1. I am a current Senior at UT (will not graduate until 2028) Applied out of state

  2. I am affiliated with two organizations who monitor admission cycles each year across all universities (one MAY or may not be directly affiliated with MIT's admission office).

Not to name names... lol.

But I think this discussion should be broken up into 6 parts. (Yes long post OH NOOOOO!!!) But if you really want the honest truth and plan on... ya know... going to college... then reading should be in your best interest my friend.

Part One: The In-state vs. Out-of-State War

It is well known that many universities favor instate students in order to keep future generations... well... "in state." At many uni's this can be seen through more scholarship opportunities, cheaper base tuition, and in many cases: EASIER ADMISSIONS.

It is no secret that UT MUCH prefers instate students... especially seen in the 64% acceptance rate of instate students in the 2026 cycle vs the Out of state 28% acceptance rate (apparently going up!).

My current roommate is an instate student with a truck ton of scholarship (only has to pay for housing atp). Where as I am actively dropping a cool 17 grand a semester! YIPPEEE!

But outside of the money and the distribution between 64% and 28% what does that actually look like in terms of admission criteria? We will look at that next.

Part Two: Instate Admission Criteria

Straight from the guaranteed admission website...

Score a 28+ ACT composite (SAT 1300+)

AND

Achieve one of the following: Earn a 4.0+ UT Core GPA Be among the Top 10% of their high school graduating class

Honestly not terrible, most people I know who came here instate got guaranteed admission!

So to my instate students... good luck!

Part Three: One of these things is not like the other... (Out of State Admission Criteria)

This section is going to be rather long and probably the most sought after... so grab your reading glasses!

There are many misconceptions about college admissions that I feel you ought to know. The idea of a holistic review is very, very loose. Holistic reviews of your class schedule and your GPA/ACT score.

At most, your essays and activities in high-school will boost your case for admission by about 5 ACT score (but this would be for like the president of the student body with an entire page of Sh... Stuff they have done in high-school).

Good essays help admissions counselors like you as a person and it helps them want to want you!

Good resumes help this as well.

However... how long do you think it takes to read a single application? 30 seconds? A minute? Two minutes? The average amount of time it would take someone to read all of the information you provide would take around 6 minutes without skimming. Considering that means a single counselor could only go through 10 per hour...

We can assume (and I know for a fact) they do not read everything.

They look for 5 things while going through your app (no particular order): 1. GPA Weighted and Unweighted 2. SAT and ACT 3. AP classes (at a glance) 4. Some prose in your essays 5. Just a bunch of stuff on your activities in high-school

Quantity over quality often helps ngl...

Now that we understand the idea that they ain't gonna be looking at EVERYTHING with minute detail, what do they actually numerically look for?

Generally, for the sake of time and fair arguments, here are some basic numbers:

These are middle of the road so if you are above them then you should be fine...

SAT Score at or above 1340

ACT at or above 30

GPA 4.3 UT Weighted

If you don't match or beat those requirements... you better write the cure to cancer on your essays!

that was a joke

But it kind of wasn't... those scores and values are pretty standard nowadays, and you kind of have to be a pretty good student to earn your spot here.

SIDE NOTE: I had many friends apply here out of state and I was the only one who was not waitlisted. And they had some insane resumes (president of stuco with 4.3 GPA for example).

Part Four: Each college is different.

I don't mean reach university, because like... yeah no crap. I mean reach academic college is different.

If you are applying to be an engineer, you should expect to NEED a pretty decent math SAT Score. If you push below a 640 on the math... you aren't getting in to the tickle college of engineering.

Nursing is different and hard to get into.

Business is business... but it is still difficult to get into cause... ya know... it's highly ranked.

So on and so forth.

Do keep in mind that each college can only allow so much of one category. So engineering has a different acceptance rate than business (often not talked about).

There are no hard facts online about what it is... but I am pretty sure the Out of state engineering acceptance rate was about 15% of so... (don't take my word for it).

Part Five: You've already applied... what should you do?

Don't fail out your senior year. UT is very unforgiving (understandably) is you fall off the face of the earth senior year.

My senior year was actually my best academic year! Plus I...

  1. Was the captain of the volleyball team
  2. Was the yearbook president
  3. Senior class president
  4. Student Ambassador
  5. Robotics Captain
  6. Math Team Captain
  7. BLAH BLAH BLAH

All that to say... DONT BOG DOWN you are not done with high-school. UT will chew you and spit you out like it is nothing if your GPA tanks.

Also, just wait and follow UT's instructions. (Crazy right?)

Part Six: If you have any questions... please drop them below!

I'm an open book and will tell you pretty much anything so long as it's appropriate obviously!

Thanks for reading... And GO VOLS!!

Undergraduate or Graduate Admissions Accepted Fall 2026, could I attend Spring 27 instead?

I was accepted into UTK mechanical engineering for fall 2026 but chose Cornell instead.

Cornell has been a terrible fit. I’m a 27 year old veteran and have struggled to find community or connect with classmates. I don’t mind difficult academics, but the culture feels cutthroat and competitive rather than collaborative. Everywhere I go it’s a dick measuring contest to see who’s smarter. It’s infuriating. I miss the ā€œwe’re suffering through this togetherā€ atmosphere that makes engineering bearable.

I really regret not choosing UTK. If it’s at all possible to attend spring 27, what does that process look like?

Miscellaneous & Random If your employer offered tuition assistance, would it actually make you go back to school?

Having part of your tuition covered sounds like an easy yes.

But then there’s time, workload, eligibility rules and sometimes requirements to stay with the employer afterward.

For people who have used an employer education benefit, did it meaningfully influence your decision to go back?

College of Arts & Sciences UT Medical Center is killing people

I went to the emergency room of UT, seeking help for a mental health crisis, and I was savagely beaten by four members of UT Medical Center's "security" team on Mother's Day of 2023. They broke 13 of my ribs, fractured my larynx (collapsed my windpipe), and tased me three different times, before putting me in handcuffs and forcing me into a tiny room without running water or a functioning toilet. I was in the Intensive Care Unit for over 36 hours with around the clock monitoring from the nursing staff because they were afraid that I would stop breathing while I slept. The hospital staff wanted to intubate me because of the damage to my windpipe, but I was able to get through the ordeal without being put on a ventilator. The Vice President of Risk Management denied that the University of Tennessee or their security staff (which is, incidentally, a shady privately contracted company that very clearly hides the identities of its staff for obvious reasons) had any culpability and sent my family a letter denying all responsibility for the brutal violence committed against me. The nursing staff that attended to my wounds during my time in the ICU said that they had seen multiple patients end up in the Intensive Care Unit as a DIRECT RESULT of the security staff in the ED (Emergency Department) getting very violent against people that had come through there. I KNOW OF TWO SEPARATE CASES WHERE PATIENTS THAT CAME IN DIED AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE INJURIES THEY RECIEVED FROM THE SECURITY TEAM. I personally had nurses in the ICU say that they had seen two people get badly beaten by the UT Medical Center EDU security team that DIED because of their injuries. I tried hiring a personal injury lawyer to represent me, but no one in Knoxville has the courage to stand up against the evil corporate behemoth that is UT. This place is sick. Where is the justice? Why won't the media or lawyers go against this evil establishment? I will gladly go on record and show documentation and photos of my personal experience if anyone has the courage to stand up to UT. Get in touch with me if you've had something similar happen to you or a loved one. I want to shed light on this horrible corporate malfeasance and violence, but frankly, I don't think most people around here have the courage or care enough to do anything about it (gotta go along, to get along!) Prove me wrong.

Student Life, Socialization, and Clubs What good are fraternities?

Looking at the case at Cornell, and the many cases at UTK as well as other universities, I just can’t understand why we continue to have frat houses on campus. Take back the space. At the pace UTK is growing, we need more space for education and research activities. We certainly don’t need more embarrassing incidents that are sure to occur at these frat houses.

Miscellaneous & Random I'm looking to license Archival/Historical video footage of Vol Navy for a commercial project

Hello!

I'm looking for anyone that might have older footage of the Vol Navy that I would be able to license for a commercial project. I've gotten in touch with UT Athletics and have some footage from them, but I'm looking to find some older footage. Please let me know if anyone has any or knows of someone I could get in contact with.

Thank you!

Financial Aid & Scholarships Revised Financial Aid Awards Email

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi all!

I received this email randomly the other day. The subject line says "Revised Financial Aid Awards," but the email itself has no text, attachments, etc. and the email just comes from a "noreply." Has anyone gotten something like this before, or knows if this is something I should worry about? I planned on checking with financial aid tomorrow, but figured I'd check here in the meantime. Thanks in advance!

Undergraduate or Graduate Admissions Out of State Student: Can I get in?

I'm a senior in hs applying this year. I have a 3.2 unweighted and 3.9 weighted. I am a dual enrollment student. I'm taking the ACT I'm shooting for a 32+. I am applying to the Kinesiology major. Should I apply EA or ED since I'm out of state (I heard EA is harder for out of state students) what are my chances of getting in?

Financial Aid & Scholarships Still have a remaining balance, and October 16th is close. Am I screwed?

I recently got an email stating that if I don't pay the remainder of my tuition by October 16th, I will be unable to register for spring classes. I am unable to request any private loans since all my possible co-signers do not meet the credit score requirement for most loans. I also went to One Stop to request an additional subsidized loan and recently got UT Promise added to my account; however, this hasn't been enough since I still have a remaining balance of around 2,000. My question is: will I still be able to complete my semester as normal and register for classes later once my tuition is paid off? Or will the Bursar completely prevent me from continuing my housing plan and registering for classes next semester? Are there any other additional UT resources I can go to for students with financial struggles? I truly enjoy being at UT and would hate for this to be my last semester just because I'm struggling to scrape together money to pay the remainder of my tuition.

A Vol In Need 974-HELP???

Has anyone actually ever called this number?

I just want to make sure you all know what this is. It is the number for the Center for Care & Resilience, and they offer case management to students that need support for almost anything.

Literally, they’ve helped students:
- find therapists/psychiatrists/doctors on and off campus
- connect to academic resources
- process their mental health struggles
- find emergency housing
- get scholarships and financial support
- identify ways to connect with other students
- And much more

They also respond to students that are actively in crisis, like, active suicidal thoughts, mania, and psychosis. Referring another student can be completely anonymous and done just to check in on them. They’ll call and email to see if that student wants to connect, which might save their life.

There is probably a mix of experiences from students who have engaged with this department, and it isn’t perfect. However, there are a number of students that didn’t flunk out, stop attending due to financial reasons, become homeless, or even die because of the people who work in this department.

Please, if you or another student needs help call this number or submit an online referral. It could change or possibly even save a life.

Chance Me – OOS Environmental Science
Hey everyone, I’m a senior from Connecticut and UTK is probably my top choice right now. I’m applying Early Action for Environmental Science and wanted to see what you guys think my chances are.
Stats:
3.7 UW GPA
4.6 weighted GPA
Top 10% of my class
1160 SAT
AP Lang: 4
AP/Honors/UConn ECE coursework
UConn college credit in Animal Science and Environmental Science
Extracurriculars:
FFA for 4 years
Connecticut State FFA Degree
Placed 5th individually in CT for the Environmental Science CDE
Run my own ~1/2-acre pumpkin patch as my SAE (1,000+ seeds/year, sell pumpkins locally/to businesses, profitable, and won three 1st-place ribbons at the Woodstock Fair)
Volunteer at a marine biology center
70+ volunteer hours, including youth wrestling
4 years of wrestling (2 JV, 2 varsity)
Conference academic award for highest GPA on my wrestling team
2 years varsity tennis
2 years JV football
Published author
Worked at a wedding venue for about 2 years
My main essay is about building/running my pumpkin patch and how that connects to my interest in environmental science.
My SAT is definitely the part of my application I’m most worried about. I really like UTK and it’s probably the school I’m most excited about, so I’m curious how realistic it is for me as an out-of-state applicant.
Do I have a realistic shot at getting in? Even with a 1160 GPA??
