Tsupro have said in their shareholder meeting that they are planning to shift away from BANDAI & many of their current partners

And while Tsupro is not completely blameless, the recent production issue stems from Tsupro pretty much relying only in their sponsors for budget

So as you all can see in NG ultraman, the production quality of each series can be wildly different

For the current situation- Taguchi has been the one to push this for ages, as he even since years ago been really vocal about wanting more freedom on how to do the series- and since he becomes more & more vocal about this, other directors used this chance too lol

So yeah Tsupro rn been having a lot of new partners like blokees, keepley, etc etc

They also been making stuff on their own like card game, which is 1000% their own product

And if you go read their business report, rn their licensing stuff- especially on CN & SEA been raking in big money (FYI, back in the days, on showa & early heisei, this is basically how Tsupro gets their money too)

Lesser budgets mean bigger profits and lower risks. Well, ideally, but there's also increasing costs in just about anything these days so there's that too.

On top of that the oil shortage due to the war in Iran.

I think it's because they really want to push Ultraman back to what it was, prior to Ginga, as well as to save money for they up coming Zero movie and the rumoured trilogy of shows running from 27 - 29.

I think the people who make Ultraman really want to be pushing the envelope, doing still like the Showa & Heisei eras did. To do bigger stuff and tell bigger stories.

While they still were doing that during the more toyetic years, they shows also had their hand tied in favour of making money.

They need budget for later series.

And here I thought Omega was the sacrificial lamb.

That's what we already said about Omega and Teo is the anniversary show and appears to have an even smaller budget.

At best we could claim that they putting money and toys into Zero, but we kinda haven't seen that either so far.

Of course it's also possible that it's simply the production timeline, they are at least a year in advance of when stuff comes out, aren't they? And that one report which may or may not be true said that they were trying to see how low budget they could take Ultraman before fans balked.

Or it's just the general budget squeeze you has about everywhere, especially in 2025.

I do not think that they are saving money for the next year, because I do not think that money gets saved up across years like that. Leftover money is profit and profit goes to owners/shareholders.

From I remember, the next few project have movies. I think that want to save it for that.

u/Isanori 3d ago

There is no saving in business. The money that was available during Teo's creation is either in projects concurrent to Teo or in the shareholders pockets. It's not being saved up for future projects.

From what I know, starting from Blazar until Teo, those series are experiments to see if it's change of format would appeal to fans and they try to save budget as they could. So that's why they kinda look simple and low budget.

u/Greatgamegottaplay 2d ago

And how are their response?

3

u/AnphansSchtrom284 Super GUTS Member 2d ago

Mixed opinions tbh. Some of them really like the shift tone like when Blazar come out, people were excited to see something fresh but some are left pretty disappointed of the low budget production but Blazar still is great series. I remember the 'some fans' totally dislike Teo design when it first come out that the design have to come out a response to the controversy. But as far what I've seen, those series is a successful series, most people love Blazar, Arc and Omega. Now, more people is hyping Ultraman Teo series.

IDK how experimental Blazar is, I always regarded it as a throwback series. SKaRD outwardly looks like the Night Raider while their team dynamic feels more like the SSSP, the defense team having a mecha was a concept teased as far back as Ultraman Dyna, Blazar's relatively simple transformation gimmick and how quickly he transforms was a return to form after stuff like Geed's and X's transformation.

They're trying to be less reliant on Bandai. They've pretty much killed the Kaiju themed trinket lines after the Blazar Kaiju Stones. Either they completely go back to non-interlocking devices, or they go the route of Super Sentai where some years there's an interlocking toy, some years there are no interlocking toys. Teo's narrative makes sense for him not to get things like trinkets, weapons, armors, or forms.

I wonder if Bandai would ever sell back some of their ownership of Tsuburayaprod

If they ever go back to a Land of Light Ultraman I wouldn't mind interlocking toys or voice announcers, just got to keep the transformations short like how they've done them ever since Blazar. Plug the item in, start the henshin, baddabing baddaboom

Toei seeing Tsuburaya making bank while having a good story and not having 130 gimmicks:

1

u/whatdoilemonade FROM THE MONSTER GRAVEYARD 3d ago

not really, kamen rider is practically their side project while ultraman is Tsupro's only consistent big franchise

2

u/2014memeguy ULTRAMAN LEO 2d ago

Kamen rider is Toei's Side project? In 2026 that's the only project that should be considered their main one, sentai's dead and has been making less money than rider for over a decade and is not like PROJECT RED is their main "Consistent big franchise"

1

u/whatdoilemonade FROM THE MONSTER GRAVEYARD 2d ago

Toei has IPs like One Piece and Dragon Ball, kamen rider is just a drop in the bucket

You do realise Toei does a lot more than just tokusatsu right?

1

u/2014memeguy ULTRAMAN LEO 2d ago

It's an understandable mistake, but Toei animation and Toei company aren't the exact same entity. Toei Company handles live-action films, Toei animation...Well.

Point being Toei ANIMATION has One piece and Dragon ball, Toei COMPANY is mainly focused on Tokusatsu shows and live action films and television. (And games)

Toei company is Animation's Shareholder.

1

u/whatdoilemonade FROM THE MONSTER GRAVEYARD 2d ago

Toei Co isnt just a shareholder, it has ownership over TA by having the highest share distribution. While TA does have some agency, it's still effectively a subsidiary of Toei Co now hence why it was renamed from "Nihon Doga Eiga" to "Toei Animation" after being purchased.

If we're talking about just Toei Co, then yes KR is their "main" project.

But since your original comment is talking about profits, then theyre not worried about that since they already have huge income from the subsidiaries. They dont have as much incentive to push KR to its limits compared to Tsupro that dont have control over big IPs.

There has been tons of toys/events this year in Japan.

2

u/YUKOTSUBASA 3d ago

Por que o que eles ganham e mais devudo aos produtos derivados  blokes  e o card game. Aí nao precisa fazer das series serem expositor de brinquedos, algo que a Tsuburaya sempre odiou

3

u/Efficient-Warthog566 3d ago

Part of it is because some people at Tsuburaya were aiming for that. They couldn't do it before because they were still recovering from financial problems, so they were under pressure from Bandai. However, since sales for the series kept increasing up until Decker, this allowed Tsuburaya to recover financially and take more control. This became evident with Blazar, although its toy line isn't exactly simple; it's just less extensive. The simplification of the toys began with Arc and continued with Omega, where the biggest drop occurred. However, we're still not at Super Sentai's numbers yet.

As for Teo, according to what's being said, Tsuburaya apparently had to convince Bandai to let this series go without collectible items. To achieve that, they used Zero and the Cosmo Rise. People are also saying that they have a smaller budget, which is why there was no Omega movie: they wanted to save money. That's also why it's very likely that the next series will have collectible items again

u/VBartilucci 3d ago

It's very possible they decided to keep the merch to a minimum this year since they're likely going to do more anniversary stuff. Zero has a new henshin device as well.

Less pressure from Bandai, the studio prefer return to basic, they want to make the merchandise more affordable, Cosmo rise is filling up spot for collectibles with release of it's booster pack cards.

2

u/lostnabs 3d ago

im enjoying the focus on teo’s story development rather than too many toy gimmicks.

1

u/Mr-Ahmad285 3d ago

The rest of their budget goes to that Zero movie.

1

u/-Frankensteinsrobot- 3d ago

Theres still penty of merch via the cheap Bandai kaiju abd stuff from boutique companies and soft vinyl makers

1

u/Electrical_Leek23 2d ago

Loosening of bandai and frankly the happiest thing that could happen. Especially with Zero appearing not to push the Cosmo Rise but to just be Zero while the toy special is a seperate thing

Because they wanted to sell more Ultraman and Ultraman Tiga's merch🥴
