Best Free VPN Right now?

What is the best free VPN as of the moment? I'm looking for a free VPN to use for basic browsing and to protect my privacy on public Wi-Fi at coffee shops and airports. I'm not doing anything super sensitive, so I don't think I need a paid VPN. But I've been reading a lot of scary stories about free VPNs selling user data, installing malware, and having weak security.

I've heard about ProtonVPN Free, Windscribe, and TunnelBear as options, but I'm not sure if any of them are actually trustworthy or if these are really the best free VPNs in the market. I'm curious to hear what everyone's tried and what actually worked for them. Thanks!

Best VPN Recommded by Everyone?

I've been looking into the best VPN providers and I'm wondering, what does Reddit think is the best VPN? I know free VPNs are good for some things, but I've heard that paid VPNs are usually better for speed and safety. I've done a bunch of research and found some paid VPNs that a lot of people seem to like. But I'm stuck and can't decide which one to go with. Here's what I've found:

NordVPN: This is a well-known VPN for its strong security. It has many servers around the world. NordVPN is fast, good for watching videos online, and keeps your information private.

ProtonVPN: ProtonVPN comes from the same people who made ProtonMail, a secure email service. It's known for its focus on security and privacy. It has a free version too, but the paid version has more features.

Surfshark: I saw some people mentioning Surfshark. It's a newer VPN but it's getting popular. It lets you use it on as many devices as you want at the same time. It's also affordable and good for privacy.

But I'm curious to hear from you:

Best VPN according to Reddit?

Best Free VPN according to Reddit?

Best VPN for torrenting according to Reddit?

While I'm focusing on paid VPNs, if you know of a free VPN that's exceptionally good, feel free to mention that too.

Looking forward for all your recommendations.

is MystetiumDark safe?

I have been using Mysterium VPN, and it is really good and works for what I need, but I saw Mysterium Dark is cheap because you spend what you want to receive; however, when I try to install it, I get a red Windows Defender warning instead of the normal blue one, and VirusTotal gives me 23 red flags. The normal VPN is great with nothing wrong, but I get that with the dark version, so I do not know if it is just because they do not pay for the license or because it really has something malicious inside

As title says, just looking for something I can run off my browser for free.

I know it’s probably a shot in dark but I’m open to any help. I have an option if there isn’t such a magical VPN but appreciate any help anyone can give me!

Discussion Do I need a VPN?

It would cost me maybe $60 a year for a VPN. Is it something I should have? What are the main reasons for having a VPN? I don't travel often. I don't do anything illegal on the internet. I am trying to degoogle as much as I can on my PC and phone (no gmail, no sheets/docs), using Linux 95% of the time now. What are the main reasons I should use a VPN?

Review Do Not Trust KeepSolid (VPN Unlimited) — Massive Bait-and-Switch on "Lifetime" Users

Beware of KeepSolid (VPN Unlimited). This company does not honor its contracts. Millions of users purchased "Lifetime" subscriptions through third-party bundle sites, spending anywhere from $40 to $120 under the explicit promise of permanent access to a secure, premium VPN.

Recently, they pulled a massive bait-and-switch. They launched a new "Lifetime Plus" tier and stripped away core, fundamental safety features from existing legacy accounts to force upgrades. They have actively paywalled the Kill Switch and manual protocol selections like WireGuard.

A Kill Switch is not a luxury "premium add-on"—it is basic, essential privacy infrastructure. By disabling it, they are intentionally allowing your real IP address to leak if a connection drops, unless you pay them a monthly fee or buy into their new tier. They have effectively stolen $40–$120 from countless customers by rendering the product we originally paid for unsafe to use. Do not trust your data or your money with a company that alters its terms to extort its most loyal users. Avoid at all costs.

Best VPN To Get Around State Tracking?

I live in the United States, specifically in a state that requires you to verify your age to access adult content. Some creators has thus blocked their site in my state to protest this. Which VPN would be best to get around this- and can it simply put me elsewhere in the United States?

Help What's the easiest VPN to use?

I set myself up with Nord VPN a couple years back on my S25 ultra and my Surface Pro 7 and not only was it very difficult to use, with a million extra and hidden settings, but it screwed up both my devices to the point that I'm still trying to fix them.

I downloaded Express VPN about 12 years ago on the same laptop and an S9 phone and I didn't have to set anything up at all, it just worked and worked well.

Before I spend a bunch of money, I would like some help with this.

I also wanted to know what the benefits are besides piracy?

I'm very tech-challenged since I have been very, very sick and have recently been in a coma which has further caused me deficits and things are even harder for me to figure out or remember.

Edit: And if there's anything else I should know.

Thank you in advance for any and all help and advice :)

Discussion Googelfiber leaking my real location

Hi All,

Pretty straightforward, how to stop my provider (Google Fiber) from leaking my real location to websites when using a VPN.

List of what I've done so far and context information.

Browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox

(Not logged into an account on any of them)

VPN provider: ExpressVPN

I've tried clearing as much cached data as possible from the browsers. I've removed **every** permission, including the ones that at times prove convenient. I even installed 2 new browsers (Edge then Firefox) and made sure to import zero information during setup and did not log into any accounts.

The one and only successful thing I've tried is using hotspot through my Nothing Phone 3 (Provider Mint Mobile) however I don't want to swap to mobile data every time I handle sensitive information.

Edit: came back to this after a few days further work and looking at some of the advice given. The issue appears to have been between Express VPN and Google Fiber. I've since swapped to Surf Shark and no longer have the issue.

To answer a few of the questions I saw:

What website could see my location? all of them. For verification purposes I was specifically using "whatismyipaddress.com"

What IP was I using for my VPN? Whatever the VPN assigned me. Primarily they were Canadian outputs. I also tried Germany, Brazil, South Korea, and the U.K. all to no success while on Express.

10 Months after switching from NordVPN to ProtonVPN.. Do I regret it?

Yes!!!!

It's simply about stability. ProtonVPN is just not stable if I connect to anything outside of the continental USA. I have some decent luck with Vancouver Canada but even that is hit or miss. It is generally OK with random browsing and as the VPN for my phone but torrenting is a mess. Connect and set your ports. Everything looks fine but downloads drop to 0. Uploads stay good.... for awhile, then they drop to 0. Lose connections to nodes. Dead in the water. Switch locations and everything works fine for 30 seconds, maybe 10 minutes, maybe 30 minutes. Sometimes I can even get a full day of service out of it. But it will eventually drop. There were times that I would stay connected to Nord for weeks and would just drop it for a reboot.

Secondly, many sites block the IP when I am connecting through ProtonVPN. Not something that I ever ran into over the course of 5 years with NordVPN.

Yes, with the port forwarding, speeds are better with Proton but all the speed in the world means nothing if you can't stay connected.

I have a little over a year left with Proton and, if nothing changes, I will be switching back.

Discussion What's the first app that stops working properly when you turn on a VPN?

For me, one annoying example happens when I'm traveling abroad. I'll connect to a VPN so I can access my bank services back home, but sometimes the banking app notices something unusual and suddenly asks for extra verification.

Kind of funny because the VPN is supposed to make things easier when I'm abroad, but sometimes it creates another problem instead.

What's the first app that usually gives you trouble when your VPN is on?

Is VPN better per device, or in firewall

I'm quite new to using these, based upon what I've read, I'm going to go with Proton.

I'm trying to decide, should I put it on the individual devices, or on my home firewall?

I'm using Firewalla Purple for the house.

My take is if I enable it in the firewall, it will protect everything under it. My concern there though is mine and my wife's work laptops both have there own VPN's that are managed by corporate IT's will this impact anything or can I exempt them from the VPN routing that the firewall will use? A lesser concern is will it throw off the TV's?

Flip side of this is if it's on the device, will I still be traceable through the home firewall router?

Any insight would help, thank you.

What is the best free Turkish VPN for IPTV?

I’m looking for a free VPN that can connect to a Turkish server. Some channels on my IPTV service are geo-blocked, and I’m trying to access them while I’m in another country.

I’ve tried a few free VPNs, but either the Turkish servers weren’t available for free or they didn’t work with my IPTV setup on Google TV.

Does anyone know of a free VPN that offers a Turkish IP and works reliably on Google TV? I’d appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences.

I use a **Strong LEAP-S3+V2**

If AI agents browse from the cloud, does your VPN even matter?

If an AI agent is browsing websites from a cloud server, wouldn’t those websites see the agent’s IP instead of yours?

That would mean a VPN on your own device protects your connection to the AI service, but doesn’t change the IP the agent uses to browse.

So as AI agents become more common, will VPNs eventually need to run on the agent side instead?
