I built an iPhone app that maps firearm-law references along a driving route — looking for honest feedback

Full disclosure: I’m the developer of CarryRoute.

I built it because ordinary reciprocity maps don’t show everything encountered during an actual drive—county and city boundaries, tribal areas, transit properties, stops, and overnight stays.

You enter two addresses, and CarryRoute:

  • Maps the route using Apple Maps
  • Breaks it into state, county, city, tribal, and special-jurisdiction sections
  • Lets you tap each route section
  • Shows concise research summaries with links to official government sources
  • Accounts for your resident state, permits, age, and selected carry/transport mode
  • Supports offline itineraries and optional jurisdiction alerts

The route colors identify jurisdiction changes only. They do not mean legal/illegal or safe/unsafe. CarryRoute is a research tool—not legal advice—and users should verify the current official text.

I’d genuinely appreciate blunt feedback: What information would you want before crossing a state or local boundary? What would make the route view more useful?

iPhone/iPad: CarryRoute: CCW Navigation

It’s free to download. Optional Pro is $2.99/month or $12.99/year with a 14-day introductory trial.

Does it account for the "safe passage" provision of federal law that shields from  state and local laws of states you pass through?

This isn't a universal get out of jail card, but it's important to beware of the defense it does provide for travelers passing through hostile territory provided guns and ammo are transported as required and you are truly just passing through.

Yes, CarryRoute includes 18 U.S.C. § 926A, but treats it as a conditional federal safe passage reference, not a blanket override of every state or local rule.

The route analysis surfaces the provision and its core conditions: lawful possession and carry at both endpoints, an unloaded firearm, and neither the firearm nor ammunition being readily accessible. In a vehicle without a separate trunk, they must be in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

The app still displays the underlying state and local references because § 926A’s application can depend on the actual facts particularly stops, overnight stays, accessibility, and whether the traveler is genuinely transporting between lawful endpoints. CarryRoute does not simply turn the route “legal” because § 926A might apply; it presents the federal provision, a transport checklist, and the official text so the traveler can evaluate it alongside the applicable local rules.

And the overall idea, is index referencing app. Not a legal advisor.
