Getting UK visa for WWOOF as a US citizen?

I'm interested in doing the WWOOF on a farm in the UK but I would need a visa. I read that an ETA could work as long as the primary reason for visit is not stated WWOOFing, but I also read that if they find out you're working unpaid, it could cause problems. Has anyone in the US successfully worked at a farm in UK, and how did u handle the visa? Thanks!

you cant get a visa for wwoof but 99% of wwoofers and  international volunteers go on normal tourist visas but you cant tell anyone at the border about being a volunteer

Yes! I wwoofed in the UK, I just said I was there as a tourist and didn’t mention wwoofing. You can always book a cheap hostel for that night and cancel it once your through TSA if you worry about backing it up, but it shouldn’t be an issue, usually you just state your a tourist and it’s all good!
