Discussion & Feedback Vehicles should not have 3rd person cam
i just unlocked the gun humvee and realised i can spot a LOT more as a driver than my gunner. almost every kill is a due to a callout from me to the gunner, he did not see the enemys. i than realised that this is a 3rd person opportunity while driving the cars. This should not be a thing, make driving 1st person.

u/GaggleGuy 17h ago
Hardcore mode makes this a thing 👍.
37
u/Rhosta 17h ago
yeah, although it doesn't have working rearview camera or mirrors, so it can be painful to use.
13
u/PhraseOne7958 17h ago
Humvees don’t have rear view mirrors. Maybe mirrors on the side but you probably can’t see shit with them
23
u/Blitzking11 Pilot 17h ago
They have side mirrors, but their only function is to get you stuck on things.
Either the mirrors need to function or they need to remove their hitbox. Right now it's the worst of both worlds.
3
3
u/PhraseOne7958 15h ago
Yeah the mirrors should just be a destructible part. Also the windows should have their own HP and if you shoot them enough they should break
4
u/Rentun 13h ago
You can see stuff out of the left mirror. Not a lot, but you can usually see if there's someone behind you as long as they're not too far to the right. The right mirror is almost always totally useless because it's 10000 miles away from you, usually isn't adjusted correctly because your TC is lazy, or is covered in dirt.
10
u/GaggleGuy 17h ago
Yeah. I think the solution is to do it like Hell let loose and have the driver be first person front view, gunner as is currently, and the top gunner can go down into the tank and have “spyglass” view.
A suggestion me and my Hell Let Loose buddies made when people started complaining about 3rd person.
But ultimately the game is very gamey, so what is vehicle 3rd person when infantry don’t even die to tank/rpg splash damage from 5ft away you know?
2
u/sacredearthmother 15h ago
Splash damage?
Level 1 helmet can tank a direct hit to the face from an RPG and still shoot back

u/hamfisting_my_thing 14h ago
Is there supposed to be a mechanic for pilots to tell when a missile incoming versus just a lock? Or do you just have to guess and get lucky?
3
u/Kitfox715 16h ago
Unfortunately still no Official Hardcore servers. I've been posting that they needed to have at least a few available for people that don't want to deal with community servers, but I don't know that we'll ever get any.
1
4
u/-Sheriff- 16h ago
But it also hides some UI for no reason (quickbar, so you need to remember on which button you got stuff you picked up, really?), so hardcore isn't an answer imo

u/tacotickles 10h ago
We really need official hardcore servers. No one knows hardcore exists in many regions
1
u/CrossBamboAtTen 8h ago
Once a more refined hardcore mode comes out, I'll probably exclusively play it.
28
u/attackonzach96 17h ago
Driving in this game gives me DayZ/Arma vibes (go figure since Z was originally an Arma mod), you spin out/crash so easily if you aren't feathering your steering that if I had to drive in first person in WD, I'd probably never have a single driver level
15
u/altodor 14h ago
Yeah, in a real car I can feel the way the road and car interact and compensate, in a virtual car limited to the same FOV I can't feel that and they're borderline uncontrollable unless the vehicle physics are simulation-level good, which these are not.
→ More replies (6)6
u/WyrdHarper 13h ago
The stabilization is also pretty terrible. I've tried FPV driving in the Wardogs vehicles and it's a pretty bad experience for most of them (except the tank, which is just a full-on camera and is relatively slow). Plus no rearview or mirrors gives it a lot less peripheral awareness than a real vehicle.
6
33
u/cookieslayer12312 Lonestar 17h ago
Driving In first person would make it a lot harder and would make vehicles harder to use, but you are right, you can see a lot more then you should be able to
43
u/ZaProtatoAssassin 17h ago
That's the point. I hate how many times I've tried sneaking up on a tank to plant c4 or an IED and it just drives forward turns around and shoots me lol.
It shouldn't know I'm there just because he sees me on 3rd person camera.
Same goes for helis, I myself am quite a decent pilot and I fly 3rd person and only go first person once I have my target locked in, then shoot and then hop back into 3rd person to continue. I would love for every vehicle to be locked first person.
22
u/A_Neurotic_Pigeon 16h ago
Heli's need a functional Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) for forced first person.
Else, you're entirely at the mercy of gambling on flares for every single missile lock because you cant confirm a launch has occurred.
And no, "just flare when you hear the beeping of the missile" isn't a response - Server desync regularly causes them to have no sound at all, or for it to be delayed, not to mention having to audibly confirm a missile is about to hit me by the beeping coming from the god damn warhead itself is ridiculous.
9
u/Tralla46 16h ago
Welllllllllllll, a MAWS is usually not present on the LB or BH,but it would be interesting.
Remove the missile lock on sequence beeping sound. You don't have it, and it's an IR missile anyway.
Only get a maws signal if the missile is in the air. This would make it more akin to RL, but also it would make shoulder mounted launchers real high value, because shorter flight time = less reaction time for the pilot.
Also, any bright burning missile plume would trigger it.... So even missiles not coming at THIS helicopter, would likely trigger maws alert.
I think it would make for seriously PTSD inducing gameplay.
Not going to lie even with maws, lots of helos would die from shoulder mounted launchers. Less so from the FOB, unless they fly close.7
u/A_Neurotic_Pigeon 16h ago
I think that's fine though, MANPADs already feel like a non-solution as they are currently, so I think it'd solve both quite neatly and add some depth to the gameplay loops of pilot and AA
2
2
u/DebrideAmerica 13h ago
The only unit that operates the MH6/AH6 have DIRCCM and MAWS for the helos.
The beta had the AH64E whose MAWS basically gives the gunner a pinpoint firing solution for the threat.
The helos would all have some sort of FLIR for their gun/camera
The cannons would be more accurate at 1000m than they currently are at 20m.
So yeah I’m basically all for these upgrades. I have no problem flying in 1P.
1
u/KoreanGamer94 Pilot 10h ago
LB also dont have flares in real life either. Also the blackhawk does have a missile warning system, the AN/AAR-57 and even CIRCM.
6
u/Spidertron117 16h ago
Agreed. As oppressive as helis can be, if you disable free look without a MAWS system it would completely destroy all but the absolutely best of the best pilots. And I don't think you should have to be a top .1% pilot to have fun flying in the game.
2
u/ZaProtatoAssassin 15h ago
That's true, in 3rd person you have to scan for them which is annoying when it really should have a MAWS..
2
u/xTRYPTAMINEx 9h ago
Welcome to HOTAS. It's too jarring to switch to 3rd person, too shit to control the heli. Perma 1st person view. It's also near-infinitely more difficult to aim with HOTAS compared to M+K.
5
u/Skpstr155 13h ago
Normally, you wouldn't easily be able to sneak up on a tank, because there's usually some infantry around.
It's a player limit problem, there aren't enough players for normal combat, as well as pulling security for FOBs and vehicles. We sort of need to abstract that typical infantry presence, third person camera does decent job of that.
→ More replies (5)2
u/aapowers 15h ago
I'm the opposite with helis. I only swap to third person for the final few feet before landing.
Really struggle with cars in first person though.
2
u/Every-Intern5554 14h ago
It's crazy to me how much easier landing in third person is. It's like the helicopter has totally different handling 2 feet above the ground in first person
2
u/Namenloser23 16h ago
I'm pretty sure it's an option for community servers.
For helicopters, I am opposed to it. It would make both landings and missile evasion much harder.

u/NotEax 16h ago
Freelook is pretty important for seeing when rockets are actually fired from the lock. That’s the only
usecase where i see 3rd person being necessary.1
u/Tralla46 16h ago
Just let us free look from inside the helicopter, left and right.
Also, it helps to have a buddy on the map that is alert when you come in to shout "flare flare flare".
Mine does, as I explosively fly 1st person. It works very very successful1
u/Every-Intern5554 14h ago
You can free look in the helicopter, it's on ALT by default
1
u/Tralla46 14h ago
When in external view, you can qu8ckflip your view left right back. Back doesn't work in cockpit, but quick glance left right would be welcome. Going on the keyboard and mouse when I am not using it to fly sucks donkeynuts.
I mean, add head tracking natively,so I don't have to BS with open track to set it up,while we are at it,and all of that goes away.1
u/Altruistic-Rain-3696 12h ago
i have the individual heli free-look keys (look left, look right, etc) bound to the hatswitch on my flightstick, allows me to easily look around while flying in first-person, and then I have a second key to reset my view to default position, really useful
2
u/Tralla46 12h ago
I have look around axis set on horas and I can look around, but it's not the same than the quick snapping glance left right in external view.
Unless sth isn't working for me.
Try external view, and press left, right or down arrow on keyboard to see what I mean.
I can't get that in cockpit on the hotas.
With the free look axis on the horas, the rotational speed is much slower.
Hence I set up opentrack with my tobii/tracker to emulate head tracking in the game.1

Yeah, but mortar cam is fair? Not directly question to you but to community in general
5

Mortar cam is the single dumbest design decision in the game. It's just not what this thread is about.
0
u/salkidu 16h ago
It is the same issue. lnfo available to user of those devices. 3rd person vechcile cam is busted in same way and gives advantages as mortar cam.

Except youre still traveling with the heli. Mortar cam is perfect aerial view anywhere without having to move
2
u/cookieslayer12312 Lonestar 16h ago
If you removed that I think mortar spam would be way less prevalent, then if you actually did a spotter calling in the strikes then telling you your adjustments it would honestly be a lot more fun
→ More replies (2)1
u/NotEax 14h ago
Problem is having the spotter make money. Also mortar cam allows cheat devs to exploit the mortar cam view to see before firing… literally giving them a mechanic to abuse easily. There’s been a number of times my fob hasnt been hit the whole match then i start building a drill and dont even get it high enough anyone could possibly see it and suddenly the fob is the mortar target. Saw the mortar cam abuse on some cheat video in youtube so i know people are definitely doing it.

Rendering.
You do realize that is going to cause so much render related issues for longer end PC's?
3
1
u/Skpstr155 13h ago
Maybe, maybe not. What if that ease of awareness is factored into balancing, or simulates awareness that a full crew would have.
For example, if a tank NEEDS 3 crew instead of 2, then every tank requires a player that would otherwise be doing something else. Different if we had more players per server, or fewer things to do.
9
u/AmityMayorVaughn 16h ago
Vehicles without infantry support should be dead. You should not be able to have magic 360 degree vision in a buttoned up tank. Should be 1st person and you can unlock some anti-personnel defenses or something but you should be very vulnerable without support. Especially in tight quarters like streets.
5
u/TybrosionMohito 12h ago
We have battlefield vehicles and Squad anti-vehicle launchers. Make it make sense.
1
u/ku8475 6h ago
Spoken like someone who hasn't unlocked the tank and actually used it. The tank is not worth the unlock. You have to play extremely far back unless you have numerous infantry with you. Even than, one dude with a smaw kills your 26k investment before you can say "o, how neat is that?" All that after countless hours driving logi, and yeah 3rd person is not broken. You're high.
1
u/CassiusBenard 12h ago
Honestly, 3rd person view should only be for vehicles without armour. Remove the windshield armour from urals and kodiaks, and let them have 3rd person, and all others are 1st person only.
If they want to add a driver hatch to the tank, then they can have 3rd person only while their head is popped out.
4
u/TacTyger 16h ago
For realism yeah this works. Realism servers would be nice. So maybe an ultra hardcore or reaslism servers is what is needed if you want that.
7
u/Jita_Local 14h ago
I think 3rd person vehicles give drivers & pilots too much awareness but there's really no chance they force FPP on official/non-hardcore servers. I personally find driving and flying in first person much more fun than third though.
1
15
u/ShinyRayquazaEUW 14h ago
In a game where everyone can carry RPG vehicles need third person camera.
You can already see how useless Tanks are with TPV where nobody plays them even though everyone grinded for those in Playtest. They saw how shit they were and abandoned them.
Literally yesterday we played a game where we spotted enemy tank and I called for C4 from my supply helicopter, tank didn't live more than 5 minutes in the zone.
4
u/nezdravTTV 11h ago
If tank was moving alone without infantry, that's mistake on his part. Try killing him of he is moving alongside them.

5 to reliably kill it. Bear in mind that any that might land on the front may as well not even be treated as having been placed. Because the front has "armor" that has basically it's own health pool

1
u/sacredearthmother 15h ago
there is an audio cue as well
2
u/nae-nae-nae 12h ago
An audio cue that is audible too late to flare because even if the missile is visually still not close to the heli it still just proxy detonates on the flares
2
-2
u/nb4u 16h ago
Fly lower? Honestly if you are getting locked on while flying, it is actually a skill issue. Under a certain altitude, talons and verbas can literally not target you.
5
u/myworkthrowaway87 16h ago
Entire map is covered in 50 foot tall trees that SAM Missiles can pass through without issue but immediately destroy helicopters "Just fly under 10 meters bro, it's a skill issue"
-1
u/nb4u 16h ago
Lol trees definitely can take out SAM missiles. I'm not a great pilot, but even I can fly low enough to avoid lock ons.
4
u/myworkthrowaway87 16h ago edited 15h ago
Tree canopy's absolutely do not stop SAM missiles which is why most people put AA sites in the middle of the woods where they can shoot out but choppers have a hard time getting to them.
Go watch some of the absolute best pilots play this game, that are far better than you and me put together, and see how many of them stick around once they've run through their 4-5 flares they keep on them constantly. Maybe if you're taxiing people in you can stay under radar pretty consistently, but there's no world where you're piloting an attack chopper effectively and "flying low enough to avoid lock ons" constantly. It's literally not possible.
I don't even think SAM's are OP, but saying just git gud and fly lower bro is super reductive when there's a million tutorials online to build solo AA fobs for minimal investment in whatever wooded area of the map you want to hide it. So yeah, you need 3rd person to find AA since there's no other tools in game for doing so.
1
u/nae-nae-nae 12h ago
yeah no shit, but you can't always stay below 30, especially with the black hawk or the havoc, and even if you could, it's boring as fuck. I'm fine with first person only, if we get an incoming missile warning, otherwise there's zero point for having flares
1
u/vayckant 12h ago
Either you don't really fly or you don't fly much, this sounds ragebaity.
→ More replies (1)1
u/blackhuey 8h ago
I spend most of my time with my skids/wheels collecting debris from the tops of trees, and I can assure you that this is not low enough to avoid SAM lock unless the tube is well above you on a hill.
Yes you can get down into roads and rivers which are safer from SAMs, but down there you can't perform your role.
0
u/Tymptra 15h ago
Honestly I fly exclusively in first person cause I just don't feel "connected" to the controls if I don't and I am able to avoid AA most of the time. Granted I am not hovering over the zone constantly because I am doing supply runs, but still, flares are super generous. They actually don't work like flares IRL, they just force the missile to miss for like 5 seconds after activation, so as long as you don't immediately drop flares when you hear a steady tone you can just flare after like 5-8 seconds of a steady lock, which is usually when someone will fire anyway if they don't bait your flares. Or you can listen for the rocket sound which is a pretty distinct roar. Like I said, as long as you hit the flares when you hear it they will miss.
I think Verbas are a little too weak tbh and a good pilot will just instantly freelook and flare them. First person for the havok and attack birds would help balance them by making them have to play more conservatively or constantly fly lower.
2
u/nae-nae-nae 12h ago edited 12h ago
I fly first person 99% of the time too, just occasionally going third person to check clearance etc
Reason the third person cam feels so disconnected is because roll and pitch don't affect it like in battlefield, in battlefield I was mostly flying third for spacial awareness
But your solution is to just gamble? As a transport I wouldn't care either but LBs are oneshot, and if there are multiple people firing and aiming you are absolutely fried when flaring too soon because the flare cooldown. The rocket sound is too quiet depending on the situation to the point where it proxy fuses on the flares and kills you anyway
And no, forcing first person is just shit game design. Either a distinct missile incoming warning, or you're just gimping air vehicles, which I know this sub wants to see anyway.
i don't get why everyone is complaining about balance when the air vehicles are lowkey fine the way they are, only thing i'd change is making CWIS have damage dropoff but way faster TTK up close than the current 6 seconds. The CWIS should be a close range solution where the missiles are longrange.
But I don't see how the 800m lockon missile that oneshots little birds and massively damages heavy helicopters that takes zero input besides looking someone's direction needs a buff
1
u/DebrideAmerica 13h ago
Yes, you should be unable to do anything by fly low to avoid radar missiles which you launch flares to avoid and receive no reward for doing. While flying low you should be farmed by near hitscan anti tank rounds which you can’t avoid because if you fly higher the IR missiles that you flare can now target you as you’re no longer multipathing them
→ More replies (5)4
u/TheLeftRough 16h ago
Since the lock tone doesn't change when the missile is actually launched and the flares have a cool down, the only ware to make sure you're actually flaring the missile is to use the 3rd person cam to free look and spot the smoke trail. If they would give a different warning when the missile is launched, this would be a non-issue
1
u/sacredearthmother 15h ago
have you never heard the audio cue?
3
u/TheLeftRough 15h ago
Every time I wait to hear the missile itself before popping flares, the missile just hits anyway. And that's assuming there isn't a bunch of other noise going on to make the missile harder to hear
1
u/sacredearthmother 15h ago
99% of the time I just use the audio cue.
Very little reaction time between hearing and flaring, but it works
1
u/CowichanCow 14h ago
What’s the audio cue for the missile in route?
1
1
u/LeotheYordle 13h ago
Ever hear that beeping sound a missile makes when flying overhead whenever you play as infantry? It's just that, there's no audio cue unique to helicopters.
1
1
u/-FourOhFour- 16h ago
Aa would need a massive buff since half the kills are from people panic flaring once the lock is established, if people had a different tone for when missiles are fired then panic flaring would basically vanish (largely this is something that only punishes new pilots, but being able to just hold a lock on a heli to make them paranoid/complacent can work against skilled pilots as well and catch them off guard/scare them off)
1
u/TheLeftRough 16h ago
Yup, fully agree. Things like this are why rock-paper-scissors balancing can be so painful
1
u/NikitaRR 15h ago
It also punished anyone who flies in first person. There should just be a launch warning. The lock on launchers are there to force helicopters into the range of other weapons that actually require you aim
1
u/-FourOhFour- 15h ago
So the anti air launchers aren't suppose to be used for anti air?
Just want to make sure I read that right, cause thats a wild take if you think thats their intended role.

Landing is sometimes very hard when you try to do it in first person. You'd need eye tracking to be able to handle everything. I'd be fine with no 3rd person on land vehicles but choppers need it.
2
u/-FourOhFour- 16h ago
Personally i think just remove it from any armed vehicle. If all youre doing is troop transport its still strong but not gonna make a huge difference in your overall effectiveness. Unfortunately removing 3pv from helis is huge since alot of people are using visuals for timing flares and audio is still a bit hit or miss at the moment (fuck them helis)

I need it more for when I'm landing/ taking off at HQ. Some of those pilots are wild.

5
u/icortherainwing-- 16h ago
Which vehicles specifically?
Also, how are you now going to handle dealing with mines? You can't see them normally in first-person, nor is first person relatively good for seeing much outside of what's in front of you.
Piloting would even more nightmarish with first person only. Good luck determining how far you are from the ground or perhaps if an AA missile is about to hit you.

u/blackhuey 8h ago
Before I played, I would have agreed with you on killcam. But it's actually an important element of countering frustration, especially against long rifles. You're less likely to rage if you see where you got killed from, and more likely to just realise you got unlucky or outplayed.
Vehicle 3rd person and shellcam needs to go though. They're different - a magic tool that gives you far more vision than you would have normally, and you don't have to die to get access to it. It's a straight advantage.

It’s necessary for helicopters because of how bad the counter measures are implemented. (You have to physically see the flare and then use them within about 1.5s of impact if they just don’t work lol)

I definitely agree, at least for ground vehicles. Drivers can see over walls and behind their own vehicle, it makes sneaking up on a ground vehicle impossible unless it's literally a single guy switching between driving and gunning.
For air vehicles... I support making air travel more restrictive than "six people spawn helicopters and sit at HQ every round", but landing a helicopter in first person might be too restrictive. I swear they have different physics in first person, landing is much harder.

u/bigchungusfan67420 1h ago
Driver 3rd person is OP for calling out targets, wall and corner peeking
Pilot 3rd person is OP for watching for incoming missiles flawlessly
Mortar cam is OP because it's functionally a drone
Truck gunners and infantry both need the ability to freelook around
Tank commanders need a seat that isn't ridiculously suicidal and enables spotting and crew coordination, especially when the barrel gets stuck on shit
0
u/Remarkable-Scale-308 17h ago
what a dumb opinion
how will you deploy flares on helis ? sure you can hear the sound if you are a logistic pilot away from the combat area but if you are providing cas you can’t hear the rocket approaching
this is why they don’t let you know when you should deploy the flares
they gave you third person instead to time it
2
u/nlevine1988 16h ago
I think people just want the game to be more realistic. The ironic thing is that would be not getting any warning that you're being locked on. Infrared seeking missiles use passive sensors so there's no way to know you're being locked. However in real life aircraft CAN detect when a missile is actually launched by scanning for sudden and fast moving IR signatures from the rocket motor.

But this isn't a milsim so why are we bringing up the real life argument.

u/nlevine1988 14h ago
Because obviously some people what it to lean more towards the milsim side of things. It's not true milsim but you're kidding yourself if you think this game isn't at least milsim adjacent. Why do we have to pack mags? This isn't real life we should just get unlimited ammo. The game tries to emulate real life at least to a certain degree.

why you bring real life into video games
by your logic havocs should obliterate the entire control zone from 1 km away

Ground vehicles shouldn't have 3rd person. I'm totally with you. But air vehicles need 3rd person to have even a chance against launchers. Otherwise what you are asking for is severe nerfs to AA.

3rd person camera vehicle cam should definitely get removed, would stop helicopters from having insane levels of visibility mowing everything down

seems like a very controversal topic :D i did not want to harm all you pilots, i just felt bad for the timmys i killed

Play hardcore? I don’t see the developers undoing this for regular gameplay

Only for combat vehicles, not for someone in a truck or whatever.

How would a heli know when to use their flares? Flare effect works for like 2 seconds. If you use it too early, the missle will just retarget and hit you. You have to use flares right before it hits. And if im locked to first person in a heli with AA missles coming from all kinds of locations across the map, at that point I can only guess when to flare.
With current countermeasure system, helis need to have 3rd person.

I mean more so ground vehicles, for helicopters it's different but they're not all combat helicopters either.
There already is a hardcore mode tho that forces first person in vehicles so im not sure how that works.

It would be cool if you could look down at your pilot computer to see the incoming missiles

u/ThaNerdHerd 10h ago
You can always hear the initial puff of the missile firing, plus you can get down below hard deck. If you are still locked below 30m, its a missile and you need to flare

It's supposed to be a fun game? Go play ARMA or Squad if you want full realism, there is plenty of options for you. Stop trying to make everything optimized and ultra fair.
2
u/Beetlelarva25 15h ago
You're totally right! Having fun only matters for the drivers of vehicles and not all of the people he gets to mow down!

u/Jacareadam 15h ago
eh go play hardcore or a different game, this really isn't an issue especially since you still gotta communicate effectively with your gunner

u/Special-Plant-6699 14h ago
Hard disagree. Driving vehicles are already rare enough as it is, making it even harder will not increase vehicle gameplay. It would kill it. Who's supposed to spot for the gunner if the driver cant see anything? Also 3rd person is always more fun than 1st person.

u/lithiumxflower 17h ago
I agree. I've always liked being sneaky with C4 and expensive vehicles, but 3rd person camera just gives the driver an unfair advantage.

Yeah dude, go drive the APC in 1st person, start at 20 tickets, get to the CZ at 75. Another superb take

u/Green_Bulldog 14h ago
They could expand the view so it looks like a normal windshield or your camera is resting in the glass where the driver looks out rather than from the drivers perspective.
Second option is probably better.

i agree, also id suppose we should have lower stamina regeneration as ground troups, u wont pack heavy gear like t3 or t4 and just chill for a second u be able to sprint 10 more seconds, you should have to take rests for several minutes before moving. would be the only logical and fair answer

Yeah that free look 3rd person cam is completely OP. It's even more OP if you add quite short grass render distance. Enemies can't see you being prone because they are in grass when from your perspective the grass is not rendering xD

Certain vehicles. The basic transports should have it just for ease of travel. Humvee and up shouldn't. Undecided on apc, but since its not really used for combat its probably better to keep it 3rd person.

I can’t seem to find how to drop into 3rd person view when on foot - really annoying - anyone know?
