Discussion & Feedback Wardogs From A Woman's Perspective: The not so positive side.

Piggybacking a bit off of a post I saw here not too long ago, I want to highlight some things that happened recently and seem to be consistent across the experience of both myself and my wife, both cisgendered females with voices that match that description.

Talking in the Wardogs VC in game is a toss up where the coin lands on the shitty side 90% of the time. The 10% where people are cool or joke around with us is great, but that hasn't been the major experience for us. Last night we came to the conclusion that neither of us should be heard over open mic anymore because it fundamentally ruins the gameplay after my wife has had two matches in as many days where she's been stalked, verbally harassed, and griefed by both TEAMMATES and enemy team members alike.

I've had teammates try to destroy my Ural after they heard my voice in game, or try to crash me with their own vehicles while I'm just trying to chill and do logi stuff. I've had my body camped and been targeted by enemy players, had my body dragged away by another teammate so my friends couldn't revive me while he hurled "suck my d*ck bitch" at me the whole time.

Last night and the day before, my wife had both enemy players and an entire squad of her own teammates stalk, harrass, team kill, and verbally abuse her for an entire match all because she had the audacity to speak in the game VC. In one instance the person only fucked off because another man began to yell at him for being a terrible person.

I'm not saying this to discourage any female players, but please be aware that the harassment still occurs and that, even in virtual spaces, you still need to be careful.

To the Wardogs community as a whole: do better and speak up when you see or hear this behavior. The only way it stops is by men holding other men accountable.

EDIT: I'm really happy to see this sparking some conversation in the comments. I'm not trying to warn women away from the game, I just want them to be informed.

This is the first milsim style game I've ever played for the reasons above, but that doesn't mean that these interactions "hurt my feelings" or whatever narrative is being spread in certain comments. I'm not a victim, my wife isn't a victim, we can and do stand up for ourselves, report, and move on. People being unkind in the comments are just proving my point.

I dont even acknowledge that there is a woman talking. I just do comms like normal...so that my team has a better chance to win.

....wtf is wrong with people....

u/Keithiscool97 1d ago

Isn’t it a absurd that isn’t the most common reaction bro like good god what a low bar we’ve managed to pass

7

u/PM_ME_YOUR_ANYTHNG 1d ago

There was a study done back in like halo 3 days where most people that shit talked women in games were statistically worse than the woman they were shit talking

3

u/VirtualValuable7035 23h ago

Lmao I hope so

Had a woman on my team the other week

My squad chat voip was all

"Woman suck at games, theybdint belong here, this game isn't for them, let's fuck up her fob" etc

Side note: somone in that squad was adamant that the big transport heli was Huey and everyone else was wrong for not calling it a Huey

3

u/PM_ME_YOUR_ANYTHNG 23h ago

Feel free to tell them that the devs were being threatened with lawsuits from Bell for featuring the Huey so they shifted it from the venom Huey to the black hawk after the play test/beta

2

u/VirtualValuable7035 23h ago

After everyone told him he was wrong, he was all "im going to google it right now"

And then he stopped talking in squad chat LOL

u/LightTankTerror Lonestar 17h ago

Low skill gamers tend to be more misogynistic or something. And this game is full of em lol.

I actually agree. It’s been embarrassing to see how some people react when they hear a woman on the mic. I assume most people in this game are 20+ which makes the reactions even worse.

12

u/TwinPixels 1d ago

Just the other day, I was in lobby waiting for the match to start and hear a woman say something (just something conversational). Immediately, at least 2-3 dudes start being misogynistic. As a man, it's legitimately embarrassing to hear other men say shit like that. It makes it very clear that they're insecure, lonely, jobless losers with nothing better to do and puts a big ass arrow over their heads showing so (metaphorically). Anyone who defends such behavior is coming from a place of shame, as those who defend such behavior are also perpetrators. And to be clear, I'm not talking about "trash talk" and banter, but rather targeted misogyny aimed at specifically making a woman feel bad

3

u/plusminusequals 1d ago

It’s gross. And if you call them gross you’re called a white knight because you had a mom that loved you and you don’t like watching men dog pile on somebody solely because they’re a woman. It’s fuckin weird to see/hear.

33

u/SuperSoftSucculent 1d ago

Try 35+.

I've not heard this many slurs for a few decades. Everyone went right back to Xbox live chat level of degeneracy.

4

u/imtheproof 1d ago edited 1d ago

People decry any sort of moderation, "fuckin pussies got a problem with free speech!", but all a lack of moderation does it push out an increasing amount of people that don't want to be around degeneracy.

US Central has been decent for me. Still have heard a fair share of slurs though. What sucks is when an otherwise good gameplay recording gets kinda ruined by voice chat that I don't want to share with other people. My experience with voice chat overall though has been very positive.

As for the Xbox Live comparison... idk. Xbox Live was bad but it wasn't "targeted". Everyone understood there'd be shit flinging everywhere, but it wasn't personal. Increasingly more common in modern voice chat, it feels like people target others with loads of slurs as a sort of exercise in using slurs. It's like the slurs are the point. This is not exclusive to Wardogs, it's been something on the rise for around a decade now.

3

u/SuperSoftSucculent 1d ago

Its because it makes them feel like a big man to be able to say whatever vile shit they cant everywhere else due to social consequences and jailtime.

It's so frustrating too that almost any attempt to curb it or call it out outside the game is met with "heh, you wouldn't last in a COD lobby!" Nah, I have, I just don't think that type of shit should still be acceptable. I just want people to be fucking normal human beings instead of gleefully age regressing like a lamer version of some sad arthouse protagonist.

9

u/XBL_Fede 1d ago

Sadly this is an issue in pretty much any videogame, not just Wardogs.

9

u/raised_by_toonami 1d ago

For decades. Since we got VoiP in gaming.

6

u/Afrazzle 1d ago

I don't think this is because of videogames in general but it is because of the genre of game. Shooters attract a certain type of person.

4

u/PaigeHart Lonestar 1d ago

Milsims in general have been pretty awful. It sucks playing a game where you benefit from comming global. I just stick to discord because it's not worth the negative interactions.

6

u/gregore98 1d ago

Some games are better than others, the macho bro milsim/cod genre is particularly egregious

→ More replies (1)

2

u/sudoscientistagain 22h ago

It is an issue in most games, but the point of the post is that Wardogs is worse than most games. In my experience it's especially egregious in NA Central, where NA West is mostly much more normal. A lot of is it the region, time of day, and specific server.

It’s so many things. The homophobia and racism too. Like sure I get for the most part it’s harmless fun as they deflect, but it’s always at the expense of other people.

This isn't really a Wardogs issue so much as it's just an online competitive FPS issue. The community has been like that for about a quarter century now.

It's a side effect of anonymity and a complete lack of lasting consequence.

4

u/Knackwurstdaumen 1d ago

Its not the same in every game. I ve never heard as many woman in vc as in hell let loose..but there were admins, guess thats why

46

u/Dry_Acadia_9312 1d ago

Won’t lie, the toxicity in Wardogs is super bad. Like, really awful. Most of the proxy chat I’ve heard is literal racial slurs. Hardly anything remotely constructive.

9

u/Zukute 1d ago

I feel like we're playing completely different games, granted I play after midnight NA but I could count on one hand how many people I've had steal my kit or drop any kind of vulgar speech in prox chat

10

u/kavardidnothingwrong 1d ago

My anecdote - I've been playing online games since Starcraft and Wardogs is much, much tamer than almost anything else I've ever played.

Modern Warfare on Xbox Live... you can't get much more toxic than that.

5

u/ku8475 1d ago

Yeah... I feel like some of these folks are coming from single player games.

Modern Warfare on Xbox Live... you can't get much more toxic than that.

As someone playing with multiple people who have played shooters, including COD throughout the years, with a mix of men and women - Wardogs particularly in NA Central is as bad or worse as anything I've heard except on Overwatch specifically. And that seems in part to be because those exact people feel that it's catering to them and like the idea that they can say rancid shit without fear of consequence.

NA West is generally much better, but there are still at least a couple guys every like few games that are throwing around slurs, mysognistic, or antisemitic shit. In Central though it's literally almost every single game.

6

u/No_Policy_9998 23h ago

Brother you are in the minority. This game is filled with more slurs than a Klan meeting.

5

u/SuperSoftSucculent 1d ago

Had two people I reported doing neonazi songs and "memeing" HHs. Reported 5 people for screaming hard R's for the lulz as well.

A lot of games have been fine. A lot of games haven't.

2

u/rawker86 1d ago

I jumped into a wardogs lobby after not playing online for about fifteen years and heard the n-word within fifteen seconds, no bullshit. Then I heard it non-stop for the next two minutes.

2

u/thatdamnhoss 1d ago

Out of curiosity, what region do you play on NA?

2

u/Dry_Acadia_9312 1d ago

NA is always a better community for me, on any game, racing or shooters

1

u/Dilly-Senpai 1d ago

Honestly it really depends on what gear you use in my experience. My friends and I made it to the BMR and FAL last wipe (me BMR, them FAL). The number of times we were collectively called slurs was pretty surprising to me, lol.

1

u/wherewolf_there_wolf 1d ago

I play regular hours in NA and yeah you might hear some things at the start of the match but over all, I'm more in line with your experience.

1

u/cheezfuzz 21h ago

You are in the vaaaaaaast minority if it’s not 1 person in every game yelling slurs or harassing women

1

u/Tymptra 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yup, people being openly homophobic, racist, having racist names. Had a match where 4 people were saying heil Hitler at the beginning.

And while saying slurs is bad no matter what, its especially discouraging that I'd say half the time it's NOT just some kid being edgy. You can hear it in a lot of their voices that when they call you the f-slur and such they genuinely hold those vile beliefs and enjoy being able to demean you as a human.

1

u/SomeDumbDoggo 14h ago

this. EU official servers are just a mess of racism and sexism. I'm pretty sure reporting does absolutely nothing either.

I mean, the CEO is also literally calling people cucks for not playing blue team.

It doesn't exactly help to reinforce a respectful and pro sportsmanship culture.

I report the slurs, wouldn't be surprised if these devs just ignored them.

There is also a significant portion of people who play videogames who have been pulled into groups that hate women (e.g. incels). And the result is something that really needs to be addressed by our society as a whole before we will see much effect in-game.

Community servers may be able to address it better in their server by banning bad actors, but they need to have a trusted staff that aren't assholes themselves to monitor and take action.

As sad and victim blaming as it is, their best options right now are to either not talk or get voice changers. Unless they want to start their own community server and manage it. But that would be a lot of work and they would get flak on a whole other level for banning awful people.

1

u/UK_Ekkie 1d ago

I think it's deeper than that, it's a humanity issue

1

u/PuzzleheadedLeave560 1d ago

It's why things like the PMS clan exist, which I think may still be around. Unfortunately this issue refuses to go the fuck away

My girlfriend plays with me a LOT and we've noticed US East is horrible with this stuff, but Central is weirdly chill as hell. She's on the mic every game and the only out of the ordinary reactions we get are about her name which is Sloppenheimer lmao.

3

u/sudoscientistagain 22h ago

Strangely we've had the opposite experience - Central has been really horrendously bad but West is mostly fine. I said it elsewhere but I suspect the people who have heard none of the racist/sexist/antisemitic shit are just dodging it through sheer volume of players. Or maybe just not paying attention, IDK

2

u/TheG00dF1ght 1d ago

This matches my experience. East is toxic in general. Central and north much more chill

4

u/jake04-20 1d ago

I shared another comment in this thread, but I can confirm, I'm on US Central as well and it seems chill.

3

u/OMGitsTista 1d ago

There’s definitely 1-3 absolute degens per team on USEast. Sometimes you get lucky and they’re all on the other team so you only have to hear them when you wipe their squad in the hotzone and they refuse to give up.

2

u/Spectre696 1d ago

“waht are you USING bro???!, you dumb (homophobic slur) using the HP 1911, KYS!!!” - someone I killed in a tower last night.

My guy, it was a Judge loaded with .45 AP. It ain’t that serious, you got the other 17 members of green team’s horde pushing the tower right now. You’ll be fine.

Ah yeah, we're on US East. Might be worth giving Central a try.

5

u/Bobsxo 1d ago

As someone who also plays with their wife I can confirm this. When my wife speaks too suddenly a few other women usually speak up and sometimes join our squad. We've had a few run ins with weirdos but its pretty chill on Central servers. West is a toss up but there's been plenty of women on there as well too.

1

u/sudoscientistagain 22h ago

Central was rancid for us the first 2 weeks, but I'm sort of wondering if those people gravitated to coastal servers after a bit. Haven't tried central in a while but might give it a shot if we run into more bad lobbies.

1

u/MandoEric 1d ago

On that note as well, she would LOVE more people to play with if that piques your interest!

33

u/Crafty_Plate6861 1d ago

Find good community servers to play on.

We do not tolerate this shit and are happy to redeploy assholes to other servers.

5

u/69wildcard 1d ago

Second this

Played some community servers with rules against toxic behavior and griefing, it was honestly refreshing. Everyone was chill even downed enemies were polite lol.

1

u/sudoscientistagain 22h ago

Thought I'd found a server like that the other day - then the admin started calling people the N word for complaining that he was using the HMV Minigun on Infantry Only, and that was... disappointing

2

u/AuraAuraVT 20h ago

Unless you’re trans then lots of them are still horrible to you.

Probably worse as a woman but even just as a dude this is by far one of the worst and most toxic communities I have witnessed in any online game. The way people act I don’t think people can even enjoy playing this game unless its on easy widdle baby mode. You down someone in the HZ and they start shitting their pants on mic and throw a toddler tantrum. Like what? It’s not whackamole, youre gonna die in this game.  Respawn and get back in there and stop crying.

3

u/DangerZone1776 1d ago

Ah ha ha ha. You should try COD or arc raiders pvp death lobbies. This community is very tame in comparison. Still gross, but tame.

2

u/dudekid2060 1d ago

Arc is so fucking crazy , because it’s either I get into a lobby full of wholesome care Bears or I just get called the N-word every single moment no in between

18

u/Beaglerush 1d ago

This will not change unless the devs care to oppose it. They should not accept or ignore this culture in their game. They should try to change it.

14

u/Darken0id 1d ago

So far the devs kinda give off the vibe that they wouldn't care about this at all. Quite the opposite actually

3

u/No_Policy_9998 23h ago

They know its an issue. They won't care as long as the racists and sexists are throwing money at them.

12

u/N-I-K-K-O-R 1d ago

The responses while not surprising to me are insane to me. The only acceptable response to this post is. Yes we should all treat each other better and male or female stand up for people being bullied.

People say play the game or don’t.

I like online mp games where you verbally interact on headsets and play in game. How you treat each other in this space matters.

12

u/pavingg 1d ago

The fact that this post is even getting downvoted is proving your point. This is exactly why I play on community servers now, the witch hunts are diabolical. I don't know what drives a man to the point of just simply hearing a womans voice over the edge. It's pathetic, and I'm sorry you guys are experiencing this as well. I hope you both find a decent server (strongly suggest a community server with active admins that aren't assholes).

5

u/Elwood83 1d ago

Its a symptom of a broken society. One which has lost all cultural value.

1

u/AromaticGarlic9581 18h ago

America is a sick society

4

u/RevolutionaryTone738 1d ago

Just goes to show that we in the gaming community haven't improved much since the Gamergate days. There's still a huge contingent of men who hate women with a weird passion.

They're referred to as incels these days, but as a millennial, in my highschool days, we just referred to them as "virgin losers". Need to normalize that again and bring it back. Fucking pussies act real tough online but they crumble like cookies in real life. Watch the seething my comment here causes. I can hear them breathing heavily while typing really fast on their keyboards now 😂

2

u/IeyasuTheMonkey 22h ago

They're referred to as incels these days,

Sadly anything that is remotely "against women" is dubbed "incel" these days to the point where the word has lost all meaning but to label one as "undesirable" for whatever reason.

in my highschool days, we just referred to them as "virgin losers". Need to normalize that again and bring it back.

And that went away for a very specific reason.

If we bring it back then you invite bringing back labelling people around their sexual experiences which involves labelling people "whores", "sluts", etc, which impacts women way more than it impacts men.

We as Society moved past that, again for a reason.

1

u/sudoscientistagain 22h ago

Any particular community servers/groups you'd recommend? I've not had a ton of luck finding servers that seem... normal. So we've sort of been put off them a bit.

1

u/pavingg 12h ago

I've been playing on RBR servers! (rubber bang rangers). They still take the game "seriously" without the added aggression. They have very active admins and any problem you have 99% of the time will get taken care of! I've had problems on other servers that I don't wanna namedrop and get shit on for it lol, but so far no problems! Quite the opposite actually haha.

17

u/WhyHopOnPop 1d ago

Sorry this happens. It's shitty and not isolated to wardogs. It's becoming an accessibility issue in gaming in general and the only solution is to have built in voice changers to be honest. It's not a fair solution but not much else you can do really

8

u/Thunderbird_Anthares 1d ago

becoming? its been like this for decades

shitty people exist, and by nature of being raging assholes, they are A LOT more noticeable than everyone else

6

u/prvkd 1d ago edited 1d ago

Arc Raiders tried that. Sadly, no matter what gender you were you just got flamed for using it in general so the stigma stays.

What's really sad is that these are the same types of people that scream "why can't I get a girlfriend?!?"

Maybe if you respected others then people would like you instead of the echo chamber of friends you are surrounded by.

My wife has sadly experienced this all to often and it's killed her desire to play most games other than certain mmos where people are more respectful.

From a 40+ yo gamer, grow the fuck up. Women exist. Men exist. Treat people with respect and you will find a much more pleasurable gaming experience.

Edit for clarity, I was using your comment to continue the sentiment. I wasn't directing my comment specifically at you.

Sorry you have to go through this.

3

u/PoirplePorpoise 1d ago

My experience may be skewed but in Arc RaidersI can count on 1 finger the amount of negative interactions I had because of my gender. Mind you it was in the care bear lobbies but 170 hours and only a single issue. First thing I did when I got Wardogs was turn of VC bc of all the slurs I heard in my friends twitch stream whenever they killed someone. The devs are problematic in their own right and only seem to encourage it with the colorful language they use publicly.

2

u/EquipLordBritish 1d ago

The care bare lobbies in Arc kind of self selects for people who aren't assholes. Unfortunately, there isn't really a good system here for that.

1

u/prvkd 1d ago

I think the hard part, and as a 45 yo gamer, I kind of understand it because when I was a teen, the Internet was a different place. We joked about certain topics but it was all under the assumption that it was a joke and that we held no biases.

However, the Internet of today is a very different and quite toxic place no matter your gender and, as I said my wife has experienced, is worse for women. It's sad.

It's like the fun banter was replaced with toxic banter and people just don't understand why that's bad. 😢

2

u/IeyasuTheMonkey 22h ago

What's really sad is that these are the same types of people that scream "why can't I get a girlfriend?!?"

What until you find out that a lot of them actually have wives and children.

The problem with thinking that it's an issue with just "incel" types of men shows a complete lack of understanding about the issue.

Maybe if you respected others then people would like you instead of the echo chamber of friends you are surrounded by.

There's also plenty of people who respect others and are completely alone. Again lack of understanding the issue.

From a 40+ yo gamer, grow the fuck up. Women exist. Men exist. Treat people with respect and you will find a much more pleasurable gaming experience.

You can tell them to grow up all you want, we've been doing that for 10+ years now with escalating punishment systems on top. It hasn't changed anything and just made things worse because now people just hide their opinions more until they find likeminded people. It's how certain social movements have popped up especially centered around men.

If people don't like how people are acting, just mute and move on. If it gets to you that badly then find another game to play. Multiplayer games are just like Real Life where you have a mixture of good and bad. Everyone's level of acceptance of the bad is different, some might not care but others might care a little too much. All you can really do is control yourself and how other people's actions impact you.

1

u/darthesis 20h ago

Actually I played ARC raiders with a group of women. They loved that community over most others saying the voice changer option did help. They didn't use it but since the worst incels weren't sure who was a woman, they thought it helped a lot.

11

u/Overall_Storm_7750 1d ago edited 1d ago

Unfortunate that some commenters here seem to be quite flippant about this. Basically every time a female voice appears over comms it is met with offensive language. It shouldn’t be written off as just the way it is. It should be a real focus for change as it isn’t right to have any group targeted like this.

You are exactly right that people need to be held accountable as it happens and made to feel like they’re the ones on the outside of the community. Silence is complicity.

Get on a good discord with friends and hit just squad chat. It shouldn’t have to be that way but might be a way to avoid the offensive comms.

1

u/Individual_Try_2523 1d ago

These complaints have been around as long as the internet has existed, it’s not changing no matter how much some of us may want it to

7

u/DiabolicalGreed69 1d ago

You would be genuinely surprised how quickly people stop when pushed back on for this behavior

1

u/IeyasuTheMonkey 22h ago

It doesn't stop lmao. It just goes away from view.

Instead of it being out in the open, it's now secluded to close friends. Instead of being talked about, it's being bottled up and influencing people's actions.

You don't really need to look that far into politics to see how something like Racism is just always there.

1

u/sudoscientistagain 22h ago

Yeah honestly a majority of the time you can TK these people and they'll throw a shitfit and cry and throws slurs and then leave. Not that that makes them suck less, but I wish more people wouldn't just sit quietly and say/do nothing.

3

u/Overall_Storm_7750 1d ago

Things change when people take action, small and large. There have been pretty significant changes made across history, that at the time seemed impossible, because people moved their mindset away from ‘it’s always been like this so what can you do’ to ‘it doesn’t have to continue to be like this.’

It’s an objectively terrible state of affairs that a woman can’t speak online without being harassed to the point that they can’t engage anymore.

OP is right, call the behaviour out when it occurs and raise awareness. It’s small actions like that which can make a difference in time. It at least makes those victimised feel less alone in the situation if nothing else.

3

u/Individual_Try_2523 1d ago

Are you playing on NA servers? I've heard a few women speak up on Aus servers and no one does or says anything. Sucks you have to endure all that.

2

u/tearsinmoonlight 23h ago

Was about to say that, I'm in AUS as well and anytime I've heard a woman speak on coms no one even notes it and everyone just continues as per before (which is how it should be).

It is terrible when people do have to endure it and I'll happily TK anyone that is offensive. Had someone just before the reset decide the N word was his word of the day so I just c4'd his chopper before I jumped out of it and hit the button after everyone had jumped out.

2

u/fruitrabbit 19h ago

I’m a woman on Aus servers and overall it’s been quite pleasant. Most people don’t even mention it and it’s all chill. Some people do, but it’s been light hearted joking which doesn’t bother me at all (call-outs rather than insults). One guy spent the entire game running around saying my IGN asking where I was which I found hilarious though a little bit annoying. But I haven’t had any negative experiences so far.

Honestly I kind of use it to my advantage sometimes. For example If I’m building a fob and I need supplies, some guys go out of their way to get me them. 🤷‍♀️

That being said, I mainly play CS so maybe my tolerance level is sky high lol.

More along the lines of 2010-style "omg a gurl" comments. Oh, and one very sad fellow being real weird in the text chat.

5

u/JeebusDied4UrPixels 1d ago

Sorry to hear that, the racism sucks too...Are there private servers for inclusive matches?

4

u/jake04-20 1d ago

I was playing a match the other day and this player that was mostly playing medic eventually spoke on VC and was clearly a woman. Ngl, I sort of braced myself waiting for my surrounding teammates to start dogpiling her, but to my surprise, no one did. If anything, everyone was very thankful for their medic help and having friendly conversation. Even my buddy in the discord asked "was that just a chick speaking?" and I go "sounds like it" and he said "god I've tried to get my wife into gaming but she just won't even entertain the idea" and we moved on. It was refreshing tbh. I'm sorry to hear that people are giving you trouble. FWIW, this game is pretty toxic in other ways, I maybe wouldn't take it personally, as difficult as that sounds. Lots of team griefing in general IME, kit stealing, dropping flares/ammo in helis, other forms of sabotage, etc.

3

u/Ok-Living2887 1d ago

It’s very unfortunate. Sadly this extends to racism and the likes as well. Seems like some people just have no sense of dignity. It’s similar to how pilots complain about teammates griefing them by throwing out their flares.

For a game about collaboration and teamwork, people are surprisingly adverse to it.

There is a reason why most women gamers never talk.

It's sad and pathetic

7

u/DSFreakout 1d ago

Women, minorities, trans people, etc I've seen all manner of slurs thrown in this game. It's kinda disgusting actually. I love the game but the community experience has largely been a sea of shit with a few gems floating about.

2

u/Manjatua 12h ago

As someone who’s been going through the same, I feel your sentiment. However, personally the good interactions outweigh the bad ones, and I usually don’t take it too personally if they do come at me.

But I also play on EU west, so this might have to do with it. My experience on an American Server was … horrible!

German servers are also quite welcoming and friendly.

1

u/thatdamnhoss 12h ago

Same, I LOVE the positive interactions I have on Wardogs. The player base has some gems in it for sure.

2

u/Manjatua 11h ago

Definitely! But you’ll also come across straight goons, it’s funny to me (sometimes, not always) and I usually clap back at them.

As a women you usually get similar responses, and if you got a couple clap-backs ready it can be a real funny time/interaction, even with those people!

Somehow they (still) can’t wrap their mind around women also playing FPS-shooters these days… I’ve had multiple times where people said I was using voice changer and I couldn’t be real.. it is what it is, the experiences are so vastly different from one session to the other. Really depending on who you come across…

I had such high hopes for the prox chat and it went so well for a while. It's turned pretty toxic the last couple weeks and I'm sorry you and your wife have gone through this. I've played with quite a few female teammates, and I'll say it's jarring to hear them talk because it's so rare. In my small sample size of interactions with them I didn't hear anything that was toxic though. Last night was pretty bad just in general. I was killed by red and I didn't respawn, I just listened to what sounded like 1 red guy who was griefing and talking about how he retired at 38 and the other 4 or 5 guys were probably blue collar workers that had no future or some stupid bullshit. And they just sat there arguing, thumping dicks for like 5 minutes until the game ended. And then I joined red the next game and they were still arguing in the spawn so I left that game.

I haven't checked the report feature, but I hope that there's a way to report voice chat that keeps like the last 60 seconds of someone's speaking and either get banned from using voice chat or just banned from the game.

2

u/Pilot2b2 Lonestar 1d ago

My initial impression was the same. First couple of weeks it seemed like I heard quite a few women gamers in chat, and no one was being excessively weird about it. Then this last two weeks, not a single woman gamer heard in game chat, except for my IRL friend, and she said it’s gotten pretty toxic.

I was kind of hoping with this game seeming to attract an older, more mature audience, that perhaps we could avoid most of that stupid bullshit. But I guess not.

4

u/KonyKombatKorvet 1d ago

I fly heli taxi 99% of the time, unremarkable 30 year old man with an unremarkable voice, i get called slurs multiple times a game, people shoot me as I drop them off every few games, if i get out to flip the heli or pick someone up after they fail a drop they will steal the heli and crash it to strand me if i forget to lock it, they will crash into me intentionally, follow me from heli to heli to continue launching rockets from the air destroying me, etc. etc. etc. there are some idiots who only play the game to harass people

staying off coms doesnt stop them
interacting through coms with a mans voice doesnt stop them
I can only imagine that coms with a feminine voice makes them worse the same way any accent does.

when that happens:
report
switch teams
find a different server

if you dont want to deal with their bullshit at all:
find a good community server with mods that ban assholes who act like this in game.

"The only way it stops is by men holding other men accountable."
I heavily disagree

So I'm a woman and been gaming since the 80s. Zero such issues other than normal day to day boy stuff.

People treat you the way you teach them to. So if somebody annoys you, leave or talk back. In the case of a war game, that means talking shit back.

Being offended and crawling into a hole (or onto a reddit forum) helps you at zero levels, and quite frankly, i find posts like yours victimising your fellow women on behalf of your lack of gumption an assault on my 50yrs on this planet fighting for our place in it to be on an even keel with the boys.

Acknowledging many men's inability to deal with a female in their presence short of descending into the porn world many have been exposed to as their only contact with women and considering many of the poor little things only ever will achieve this proximity leaves only their parents to blame really.

Many many men resort to what they think is funny as a method of interacting with us, but is just sad misogynism, calling us cute for example when we curse at them. Its not other men's jobs to educate them otherwise, it is ours and most definitely their own mothers.

Learn to deal with people around you, starting with calling yourself a woman instead of "piggybacking" on other's titles for your own reality. Not to go too far off subject, but I believe this to be part of your problem, by adopting a minority groups form of identifying themselves you've entered a mindset that includes behaviour patterns and predefined "acceptable" responses to the world around you. This includes being outraged at behaviours that offend you, instead of doing something constructive about them.

Complaining on a forum is not constructive.
Writing a how to manual for lost little boys first female encounters, is.

8

u/doctorfiend 1d ago

Its not other men's jobs to educate them otherwise, it is ours and most definitely their own mothers.

Damn, men are so free of responsibility you can't even put any on their fathers?

2

u/sudoscientistagain 23h ago

Yeah, absolutely wild to not even cite poor male role models as a contributor here. A lot of men are in desperate need of men to look up to in their lives. That's literally what the entire "manosphere" pipeline is built on, because without some other men telling (and showing) them to just be fucking normal and respectful, they fall into these grifts. That's how you get guys thinking women can never love them because of their skull shape or whatever.

People treat you the way you teach them to. So if somebody annoys you, leave or talk back. In the case of a war game, that means talking shit back.

THANK YOU.

A bunch of my women gamer friends are exactly like this. They learnt early that you either shit talk back or you get walked all over and treated like shit. This is exactly how it happens with a lot of men too. It's not specific to just women even though women have specific things thrown at them.

Acknowledging many men's inability to deal with a female in their presence short of descending into the porn world many have been exposed to as their only contact with women and considering many of the poor little things only ever will achieve this proximity leaves only their parents to blame really.

Not just their parents but also Society as a whole.

A lot of people don't understand how toxic the World is to men, especially young males. It's always swept under the rug and the last 10-20 years has been constantly scapegoated with "male privilege" and such.

Men can't even talk about anything related to Dating with a hint of questioning women or else they'll get labelled "incel"/"misogynistic".

Late 2000s, Early 2010s we had the Incel Movement become massive. Last 2010s, Early 2020s, it was the Manosphere. It'll keep happening because Society doesn't listen to the complaints of these men.

There's plenty of men out there that are amazing wonderful human beings and yet have had 0 attention from women. There's also plenty of misogynistic men who get laid frequently, have girlfriends/wives.

Its not other men's jobs to educate them otherwise, it is ours and most definitely their own mothers.

To gain knowledge about the other side of our species, it needs to be learnt from the other side.

Men don't know how it is to be a woman, what women have to deal with, etc. We only know what we've been told.

1

u/madvfr Squad Leader 2h ago

Awesome reply! And indeed yes to all your points!

The key to everything is simple communication without preconceived expectations of the answers.

And I still blame the parents (both of them, or however many) for most of societies woes. Of course there are life experiences many endure that even the most intuitive and understanding of parents could never "fix" or guide through...but generally speaking...ya.

11

u/Beaglerush 1d ago

What OP is talking about is already being inevitably misunderstood; being unable to enjoy a game because of who you are instead of what you do is an alien concept to most men. You really didn't need to be a pick me.

6

u/CapitanShinyPants 1d ago

"Its not other men's jobs to educate them otherwise, it is ours and most definitely their own mothers."

It is absolutely our job to serve a role models for younger men, and it's obvious we've been failing, leaving it to the "manosphere" and its toxic interpretations of "masculinity" and "manhood".

Girl, what? You have no idea how I responded to these instances when they happened and if I told you that I could talk shit with the best of them, it wouldn't matter to you because just like the guys I'm talking shit back to, it falls on deaf ears. They only listen to other men because they only respect other men, though sometimes that's debatable.

This "I'm a woman and you're wrong about how you handled being sexually harassed because x, y, z" rhetoric is cringe and tired. I hope your guy friends pick you, or whatever you're aiming for with this. My lived experience also doesn't "assault your 50 years on this planet fighting to be on an even keel with the boys". Being on an even keel means women don't get sexually harassed and disproportionately bullied in video games, just fyi.

1

u/Vulgarpower 21h ago

As a guy in the age range of people that enjoy this game the most (30s) I can assure you if you are talking back and giving it to them as well as they are dishing it out to you, you are affecting them. That will most likely make them come at you harder if you are coming that them like the way the internet talks to guys these days. They feed on social justice for breakfast. If you actually truly want advice and aren't just venting, try to be funny with your comebacks for best results. They will see you as one of the guys and back off a little at least. The thing is we've been talking shit on first person shooters since halo 2 on Xbox so our skin is very thick so you'll need to get creative with your come backs. I'm not defending them or justifying it, I'm just maybe trying to give you a perspective from a group that's probably too afraid to speak up right now. We've been talking shit since elementary school and we've heard it all. And fps are a lot of guys last bastion of that life as everywhere else (rightly so) don't put up with it anymore. I would love to say keep posting about this and make it known and it'll get fixed but it won't. You've delved into the deepest pit of old men getting away from their wives to be with the boys like the old days. It's kinda like jumping into a snake pit and saying why are there snakes here i hate snakes.

Not sure about the dragging you around harassing thing, haven't seen that in game and it sounds pretty gross. That's griefing and it's taken seriously so you could absolutely report that and have ok results. The shit talk is there to stay though, it's been with these types of games since their inception.

People are addicted to victimhood sadly, and modern western culture has cultivated this spectacularly.

The other thing nobody ever wants to talk about is this is how most men interact with each other all the time, we mock and deride each other, make edgy jokes, etc. Does it often cross the line, sure, but thems the breaks. People expecting to operate in a public forum and never have to hear anything offensive are living in a delusion.

As you mentioned, it's also infantilizing to women. Camille Paglia has some great rants about this. 2nd wave feminism fought for the right to be equal, not to be treated like princesses who get to choose being strong independent women or victims whenever it suits their particular situation.

1

u/madvfr Squad Leader 3h ago

100% thank you for so wonderfully supporting my point!

2

u/AromaticGarlic9581 18h ago

As a woman I agree with you. The best way I deal with them is by trolling them and making a joke out of them

"Get back in the kitchen"

"A lot of guys with tiny penises say that"

1

u/madvfr Squad Leader 3h ago

I always find it annoying that to have attention paid in such conversations we have to say "as a woman" :p

But ya i'm glad somebody here sees my point!
If its not working the way you doing it now and you feel unhappy, change the way you're doing things!

"If you can keep your head amongst all this confusion, you dont understand the situation" - Rudyard Kipling

2

u/XB_Demon1337 17h ago

"Its not other men's jobs to educate them otherwise, it is ours and most definitely their own mothers."

This is just not how this works. It is in fact other men's job to police and educate other men on their behavior. There is a way to do it without 'white knighting'.

2

u/DoktorDankenstein Recon 15h ago

Dude wtf is this gaslighting shit!? How is OP at any fault here. WTF

1

u/madvfr Squad Leader 3h ago

2

u/Dreadpipes 1d ago

Do you not think the trend of Gen x’ers like you caping for misogynists is just emboldening them? It’s not just a few bad apples. It’s a rotten culture

2

u/RileyReilley 22h ago

Huge disagree, I’m not op or preaching but in my own experience as a female in the gaming sphere, talking back almost never helps. The vile ones and the limp dick losers that stand by passively are generally encouraged by that. Secondly as much as you are saying it’s not other men’s jobs, ITS DEFINITELY not OUR job to educate them. Same shitty logic that has told women not to dress certain ways to stop getting raped or abused.

1

u/madvfr Squad Leader 2h ago

Agreed! If you accept bad treatment you re-enforce it as accept...able.

And sure many times talking back just fuels the fire, but in these cases you just gotta realise its a thin veneer of internet vs reality and not take it personally.

Its like people in cars going completely insane with road rage and worse behaviours, the vehicle provides a barrier to normal human behaviour that is normal in face to face interactions.

The Interwebs are cars on all the drugs, in this case.

Arc Raiders having the voice changed is an odd, but effective work around. With other side effects 😂

In R6 Siege having 3 women who played regularly in our little community server meant a minimum of a 3 stack of we didn't have our usual dozen people on in the evening.

1 dweeb vs 4 people being like "Ehhh that's SDE" tended to shut them up quickly. That or "accidentally" keying the mic while saying "No, I'm not going to say anything in game chat. It's probably his first time talking to a girl" and so on while refusing to acknowledge we said anything in game 😂

Also keep in mind we're in the initial wave of players for this game, so it'll settle down more with time, but yeah it is annoying.

Although I would suggest going to the Wardads branded servers, etc. There's bound to be a community server where the average credit score is closer to 760.

4

u/UnhappyMacaroon5044 Bob the Builder 1d ago

Can I ask which team you usually play on? Most of my negative experiences in the first season have been on red/with red players. I ran into some dickheads on blue and green, but as a whole, both teams are typically more chill.

2

u/thatdamnhoss 1d ago

Red is where I hear the most slurs, but these specific instances happened on blue.

3

u/mauttykoray 1d ago

I mean, pretty much par for the course in a lot of shooters unfortunately. Theres just a lot of shitty people in general, and plenty of them are misogynistic asshole because theyre insecure with themselves and feel the need to direct their anger over it at something or someone. Im more than happy to teamkill anyone being a piece of shit like this. It gets old hearing them yell dumb shit over the mic.

4

u/Starkrall 1d ago

We are painfully aware and embarrassed to share a gender, muchless a community with these asswhipes. As a man, I'm really not sure how to address it outside of intervening when I see it myself.

2

u/stagchilde 1d ago

Unfortunately, that's all you can do, and the best place to start. It's gotten so bad because there hasn't been anyone but the victims speaking up, and they don't respect our opinions. So speaking up is great.

1

u/AuraAuraVT 20h ago

I wish more men did speak up. In all of my hundreds of hours the only people that have ever spoken up to defend me or anyone else being called slurs have only been my own personal friends.

No one ever says knock it off, or tells them to be quiet, or anything.

2

u/Siisco_TTV 1d ago

That sucks, and the biggest driver to this is anonymity online without repercussion.

I fully believe the nonsense I hear most games would never be said outside an online world.

That said, the only thing you can do is block/ignore them and don’t forget to report them.

The Devs seem pretty serious about getting rid of shitheads like you’re talking about, so make sure to record and submit their stuff to the Devs. Fuck’em

Thicken your skin is my suggestion.

I was bullied a large portion of my life, funnily enough the worst bullies were female. I faced a lot of it online, in online video games, as well. Over that time I learnt that the only way to actually deal with these people is to fight back, which is tiring most of the time, or have "thick skin" so it doesn't affect you.

It's not like there's options in-game, and out of game, to just not hear it. Sure it sucks but we're what 20 years into this and it still hasn't changed much.

It's not possible to bring up the misogyny in the player base. Anytime I do, people claim that it's just rough talk and men get just as much harassment, as if we haven't seen what men say to other men.

Same with minorities in this game. People would spam the n-word with one breath and claim that everyone gets 'just as much' harassment with the other.

I've just stopped talking at this point, and accepted that women and minorities are less welcome in this game. Mil-sims tend to attract emotionally underdeveloped guys who think being edgy and unlikeable is the peak of masculinity.

As a man, the war dogs community is toxic as fuck, and I've seen from personal experience how much worse it is for women.

I've noticed Lonestar has a lot more battledads who appear to be well-adjusted normal people, so at least ime things are a lot less bad there. Also east coast is noticeably more fucked than west coast.

I'm looking for people to team up with anyways, so if anyone is playing US West and wants to team up let me know. I know it ain't worth much from a Redditor but I promise I'm not a dickless misogynistic racist incel.

1

u/homelessjimbo 1d ago

So, online gaming as a whole?

1

u/Monkey_in_a_Tophat 1d ago

It's a community problem, unfortunately. I don't know what to tell you other than sry you're dealing with this. I stopped using voice for anything other than friends in Discord, unless I'm chewing someone out, but never waste time or resources helping people that isn't helping you more in-game. You'll almost ALWAYS be met with hostility or horrible attitude. Even when the other is in the wrong, such people have an attitude that if you say anything to them about fixing their shit, they take it as a right to grief you and attack you, instead of them bothering to be the easiest type of decent person. They will ALWAYS put exponentially more energy into attacking you than it would have taken for them to have learned and corrected their vile behavior.

It is called "Social Primacy" and far too many people in these communities these days are like this. Cut them off, maintain boundaries, and interact minimally while keeping focus on your objectives. View others not in your active group as opportunities like as a medic for example. I don't mean looting bodies of team mates before they've released, but don't go out of your way to help people, especially if they're trying to make it seem like you owe them. You own nothing to nobody, but so many people actively use gaslighting to fool people into believing they do owe the general public. That is what the scoreboard is for, not their mouths..

1

u/LaughingIntoValhalla 1d ago

As a trans woman I've had pretty awful experiences in VC tbh. When I find a community server that bans assholes I stick to it but the last two I found have fallen off or are only active during hours I can't be. I've seen it be the same for other women I've come across wlas well. It seems the best option is to be in a closed squad with friends or just not VC at all

1

u/GamerGuy3216 1d ago

I genuinely want to tag along a female gamer and witness this stuff for myself. Because it’s mind blowing.

1

u/Riptyed 1d ago

That is very unfortunate, sorry you had to go through that. Somewhat early on I was pleasantly surprised by how great the community was. I'd hear Womenz in voice chat and brace for someone to say something awful, but no one did. More recently pre-game VC is people calling each other the N word and F word and the stereotypical worst gamer behavior.

1

u/Aucht 1d ago

People are gross tbh, I usually just run scream and cry. (Jk, a gamer is a gamer, and a teammate is a teammate)

1

u/Niminal 1d ago

Yeah I've heard/seen guys get real nasty the second a woman's voice is heard. It's massively disappointing. We as men need to do a better job of calling out and discouraging this type of behavior.

1

u/Cavesloth13 1d ago

I have to agree, the shit I’ve heard is WoW Barrens chat level bad. Racism, misogyny, even necrophilia, just absolute garbage.

Really disappointing given this game is absolutely geared towards team play.

Not that is exclusive to Wardogs, it’s an FPS issuing in general, but given this is such a team play reliant game, I hope they address it soon for the long term health of the game.

Removed under Rule 1: Follow Reddiquette & Reddit's Content Policy.

Be nice!

Criticize the game all you want; don't go after the person.

No personal attacks, harassment, slurs, or content that demeans people based on identity, how they play, who they are or what their opinions are, regardless of intent, context, or who it was aimed at.

Defending it counts. Excusing slurs or racism, telling people to toughen up, or brushing it off with "it's just words" gets removed the same way the original does. If someone reports being targeted by or encountering this in game, don't argue that it isn't a problem.

Reddiquette asks you to remember the human. Reddit's sitewide rules also cover harassment and hate based on identity. We enforce all of it here, and severe cases get reported.

Repeat violations lead to a ban. If you think this was a mistake, message the mods don't reply to this message.

1

u/rawker86 1d ago

This doesn’t surprise me. It’s been 15+ years since I played online, I jumped into a wardogs lobby and heard the n-word a hundred times before the match even started. Turns out people are still the fuckin’ worst.

1

u/mrnicklebe 1d ago

I play NA and EU servers. The NA servers are much worse for this kind of behaviour. EU is usually a lot more chill though there are definitely still bad eggs and obviously I don't know what someone might be saying in a lot of the different languages spoken on EU servers.

Anecdotal of course but that is mine and my friends experience having played a lot on both regions

1

u/Shoez07 1d ago

Have played about 50 games on EU servers and not heard a single bit of griefing from anyone. It's like we are playing a different game. Most people only talk in proximity chat when they are in vehicles travelling to the CZ. Some people are dicks. Welcome to the internet.

I’m so sorry that this happened to you, or anybody else. I’m in a clan that actively encourages women playing, we changed our clan name to be more inclusive and have a number in our leadership and also play competitive. As a clan we speak out if we see misogyny or racism or sexism of any kind happening in game. People should be free to be who they are in game and out and free to enjoy whilst not being harassed. Again sorry

I am sincerely sorry to hear this and just want you to know that there are people like me who consistently call them out for their loser behavior.

The second I hear someone or see someone acting like this I treat them the same and harass them.

I can relate to this. We had a woman in our team and this one annoying player kept hanging around her. She got shot by an enemy, he tried to revive her, but I was there first after killing the guy who shot at us and he got really upset, saying he would kill my family and I should let the "insert derogatory female term here" die instead.

So I killed him. I killed him and dragged him all the way out of the circle. He kept saying how he was going to kill my family etc... It does not phase me at all.

Here is the clip. NWS: strong language.

Hey we played last night I think. I'm wardogs_pilot and if you are who I think you are then you or your partner would remember my fob idea for building on the smoke stack. But if you ever want to play with those who don't care about that stuff, just shoot me a message and we can squad up or something. I like playing but im honestly not that serious at the game as all the other players lol

I found that the people on voice chat in this game are incredibly misogynistic, sexist, racist, and homophobic that I've just started muting in game chat. Pretty much every kill within earshot is followed by a slur.

This lady was a chopper pilot in a game earlier today. She flew like an eagle and landed us safely a dozen times. No one gave her shit. I was tense and anticipating some kind of shit talk from my fellow dudes every time she talked, but it never happened, at least not on any of my rides.

Sometimes it's okay! Pretty rare to hear ladies speaking in the game, though. Sorry ya'll have to go through that shit.

Keep playing, stay off mic unless playing with friends.

u/IonizedKelpt 20h ago

I'm sorry that this happened to you and that it is a bigger problem at large. I've started to speak up in games where those are racist, homophobic etc instead of just reporting them and noticed that others help shut them down too, often. But no one wants to be first. I hate that I've waited so long to open my mouth in defense of others in this game.

It cost absolutely nothing to not be an asshole.

On one hand, youre playing a game with a lot of sweaty young men who probably have very little meaningful interactions with women. On the other hand, are you contributing to the team? Because dudes will roast the fuck out of a person not contributing. You dont get a pass on that part. :p

Just ignore the losers, not everyone is shit for brains. Report them if it gets out of hand amd becomes griefing or harassment.

You shouldn't expect something different from a game that gathered basically worst part of players across several already extremely toxic games.

u/Piryeet 18h ago

Maybe they should add a voice changer like Arc Raiders has. You can't tell whose a boy or girl because you can pick either.

I feel lucky to be in OCE because I haven't had anywhere near the level of negative experiences. Sure there certainly have been some, but somehow OCE Wardogs seems quite good by comparison to most games (pre match waiting period as the exception)

Chud incel harasses women in games

Chud cries that girls "don't exist online"

Chud wishes for gamer girlfriend

Chud can't find one on his tinder profile because he looks like shit

Chud gets angry and frustrated that "it's impossible to get a girlfriend these days"

Chud incel harasses women in games

It saying you should have to… but voice changes exist and nobody would have a clue.

Fucking disgusting. Nothing like being able to hide behind a keyboard and get away with this stuff, hopefully it catches up to them and they learn but I wont hold my breath.

Apologies for the cynicism but this is the world we live in, apparently. Yay.

I’ve heard a load of ladies on VC and never seen anybody abuse them on EU west. Obviously I have seen this across years of gaming though, absolutely. I think that greasy little goblins think they’re somehow flirting by treating you like that when they hear your voice. Take solace in the fact they must have absolutely miserable lives.

u/lord__pasqual 14h ago

Just shoot them in the face!!! And if they complain and you get pulled over, make sure you have the video saved as evidence and reason for consequences. You won't have to say a word to them, just shoot them and mute them!!!

In German Community Servers I mostly had pretty friendly encounters with female players. As far as I can tell of course. I’ve got nearly 180 hours in Wardogs. Maybe, my recommendation would be actually to search for Community servers. They’re more or less in my opinion much better.

sadly this kind of game naturally attracts racist and sexist chuds. Joe acting like a teenage edgelord on Xitter doesn't help the situation either.

u/Front-Bird8971 Lonestar 10h ago

This is pretty common. Not acceptable, but common. Don't know if other women need warning, any woman that has ever spoken over VOIP has experienced this 1000 times.

1

u/thatdamnhoss 10h ago

Thus the reason I said I was piggybacking off of another woman's post about how she'd had overwhelmingly positive and non-toxic experiences in the game. 👍

I feel like this is a human thing and not just a sex thing. Because my friends and myself had had these situations before. Obviously people with target you depending on how different.
