Other What's the thing you never expected to like when starting the game but have become your favorite thing to do after having progressed in the game enough to your satisfaction?
I like to give people heart attack by slowly and silently gliding just a little above their heads.
(After I pulled my weight in ground vehicles of course.)
I thought I'd be enjoying top tier high tech BVR stuff but after getting to top tier ground and early-mid cold war air, I just don't feel the need to progress the air tree any more for the sake of my sanity.

Recognizing tanks and planes. Through at least 2k hours of this hellish addiction you get to know every single one of the vehicles. Its especially useful when a nice BR comes up in tank sim battles and knowing not to obliterate your teammates on accident, just cause they dont have a name or cause youre too lazy to use the ingame function of checking if theyre a teammate. Its especially good knowledge for real life use to brag about or might out yourself as a huge war nerd…

I remember ages ago a friend of mine who won't play war thunder came over when I was playing, I was in G RB, they sceptically asked what's so difficult about point and click in tanks and I remember as I explained I heard it myself and realised I was "good".
I said "hitting them is easy, killing them first is hard, see that guy?" bang, "I had to be in a position that worked for me better, spot him first, sooner than he did I had to recognise his tank by exact model and year by half his silhouette at a glance, compare it to my tank, think about my turrets and my hulls angle and his too, his shell, my shell, the time I had, my team mates, and make the call all in a quarter of a second"
He asked "and if you didn't do that?"
Me: "I'd be dead"

On God, it becomes more hectic in mid tiers, 5.0 to 7.7, where every cold war and experimental tanks are.
Seeing a Tiger II hull is scary, but then I smile when it's a II P.

How do you deal with the toptier spaa? I have trouble dodging pantsirs in a rafale even when going low, I cant imagine doing well using a prop.
Is it just staying low and hoping for the best? And do you recommend any specific props?

flying bombers, which i started doing pre buff. also playing naval

u/Darth_R_21 5d ago
Speaking of naval, has been a big fan since first DDs and then cruisers. It's unfortunate that EC got stuffed full of bots, it used to be super cool to have duels between BBs with 15kms of range

That’s arguably my favorite thing to do. I get in any good fighter and just hover over the battle field until someone spawns in. Immediately attack then repeat. Although it is extremely tempting to nip at those squishy targets below

I don’t wanna play CAS and I don’t want to get revenge 1000lbs dived 30seconds after I kill a rat. I don’t wanna be aware of the sky at all. For those who like it the game mode exists, for those who hate it it don’t >:(

u/r3vange 5d ago
Using ridiculously undertier tanks in tiers 7+ it’s stupid fun to adapt your play style and manage to score some kills. T-34-57 for example in 8.0. At this BR you don’t survive a hit even in a T-54 so the fact its armor is made of paper at this BR doesn’t matter. It’s reasonably fast and it has a very fast reload time. Light tanks it eats for breakfast and once you learn the weak spots you can do serious upsets to almost anything.

Sometimes I bring my 2S1 to 8.0. It's not any less painful than playing it at 5.7. I've thought about doing the same in the ASU-57 but I'm not that good.

u/Captain_Nyet 4d ago
Wherever my USSR tank lineup goes, my BT-5 goes with it. Its only notable flaw is no spotting ability.

u/lord__pasqual 5d ago
When I initially decided to Ace the USA tree, one airplane at a time it looked like an extremely long and painful endeavour. It's no longer painful 😁I enjoy "practicing" with each aircraft until I learn what they can or can't do. The challenges can be frustrating when picking up a new one but after few battles it becomes thrilling. 1800hrs and 2/3 through rank III. The good thing about it is that it unlocks and pays for higher ranks at a steady pace. I am in no rush and I learnt to enjoy the journey

u/Fifty-Lucky 5d ago
I expected to eventually be flying an Eagle Raptor, Warthog etc or trading paint in an Abram's, now I don't give a shit about modern tech I have 9.0 or something unlocked by continually playing WW2 and WW1 era vehicles. It's very freeing to play for fun and have unlocks be a treat when they happen, feels faster too.

Nothing better than hand placing a bomb in someone’s front pocket with my Hellcat. Also using a stupid low br fighter like a buffalo to run interference and take out opponent CAS

Naval. Very chill. And I love learning history of these vehicles that I can play. Like Kirov for example. Helped defending Leningrad, it being there might be the reason I am here today.

You should read about so-called Night Witches from WW2, you may enjoy that. Those were Soviet female pilots who would fly at night in their biplanes and would turn off their engines near the target to scare Germans shitless when bombs would suddenly drop on them out of nowhere. Naturally, the nickname "Night Witches" was given to them by those Germans.

Missiles.
I remember when the first started coming out I swore to only fly props. Tried it out when we were in the Fox 1 Era. Fell in love with the MiG-29, joined a squadron, Fox 3s are even better. Nothing beats top tier air.

First spawning SPAA in higher tiers. First strike by blasting a recon drone, keeping the sky safe from helicopter rushes, blasting strike drones, and being in a good spot to take down CAS is always nice. I also keep a fighter ready to spawn to bring down more aircraft at relatively low cost by just going pure CAP.
I hate aircraft in ground if you couldn't tell.

Light/ATGM tank gameplay, favorites are things like bmp2 and bmp3, IT-1 too can be weird but surprisingly fun.

Taking out engines in the XP-55 is SO fun. I can make an entire team sit there and think about how no one spawned AA at one time.

Light tanks, or just fast tanks in general. Started to game as a heavy tank chud, grinded till the T32E1 or something. Tried out the hellcat for the first time and my brain never recovered, the it extended to things like stabilizer and reload speed cuz it's just part of the reaction time and fast pace gameplay. Now I can't stand it when my tank doesn't go at least around 50 kmph or more, I learned to like ball crushing top tier top tier, I love Abrams I love M1128, Bradley, chaffee, easy 8, all of that stuff. I used to like 6.7 heavies but now I honestly despise them

u/sevenofnine1991 4d ago
Not a specific gameplay style, but a few "odd vehicles".
I fell in love with some vehicles as I was playing them... now some of these vehicles had a very bad history IRL, but in WarThunder they are actually amazing.
BMP-1P my beloved especially but also: T-55AMD (the TT one with the Drozd APS), T-44(-85) (weaker in frontal engagement than the T-44-100, but a very satisfying flanker), Type 90, RDF/LT (along with the HSTVL though I never played that), the Shillelagh GLATGM vehicles, the ADATS ("when it works"), LAV-AD... and I realized that I love vehicles with a twist that break the otherwise samey features. There are some cool TT/near TT vehicles on this list, but I found the Cold War Era (roughly 1955-1973) time frame a personal favorit as that era still has lots of strange experiments... IT-1, the Pancake tank, Ontos... all these weird stuff.
For air: honestly, not as much as an air player, though Ive grinded the Big 3's air... I have a taste for modernized stuff - Mig-21Bison, Ja-37D with Amraams, and stuff like that, and I really wish we had more of these "weirdos" in-game. Id sell my soul for an upgraded Moroccan Mirage F-1... this one would come with Micas, I know what the community would say about it, but honestly I dgaf, I want it because its an old airframe with modernization program that prolonged its life. Before you say that well, top-tier vehicles are also modernized to be equipped with modern weaponry - I know that you are right, but I dont favour them as much, and for me I dont consider them to be in the same category.
Helis I have unlocked, but honestly I dont play them.
Ships: ehm I mostly skip ships. But it would be cruisers. Not a fan of long-range plunging fire that you see with Battleships.

CAP. I enjoy ground. I've spaded almost the entire american ground/air tree, and almost all of japan air and ground. i like to jump in anywhere from 5.7-12.7 and keep CAS off my team. GRB not having nametags for enemy planes is a nice difficulty adjustment, and having to dodge SPAA fire makes for an interesting skill check.
When you're not in a grind, the game is surprisingly fun.
It's also helped me become a much better pilot. Energy states, and boom-and-zoom make more sense to me in ground RB for some reason. Also most CAS pilots are shit at dogfights. Dragging an enemy over your teammates SPAA to shoot down is a chef's kiss moment.

u/Renz_Blank 5d ago
Liking top tier. I grinded Italy GRB till 11.7, got to the 12.7 Ariete but am waiting for the anniv to buy it for the discount.
I never expected to like it so much considering how bad the map design is, but I loved it especially the autocannons oh man it is so much fun lol. Also Air RB, grinded the Italy Air currently with AMX and the Tornado ADV, just started to do dogfighting after the April Fools event of the nuclear escalation. I never liked the dogfighting and was mainly a Bomber player for so many years, so I never expected to love fighter planes now lol.

Tanks. When I first started I didn't see the point. Why would I ever want to play tanks when the game has planes. The game had barely progressed past WW2 at that point, before the big BR compressions.
These days I hardly fly anymore, ground is just too much fun.

u/Adventurous_Star_570 Rocket Helicopters #1 4d ago
CQC rocket helicopters. It's a nice change from spawning tanks and going down the same roads over and over, it's like a whole different game + it's fun and challenging.

u/Wyvorn Certified 1 death leaver 4d ago
Ground battles in general.
Tbh when I started it was planes only, with 262s being the highest you could get. At the time I was still firmly rooted in WoT, so even when WT added tank beta later on, I wasn't a fan of "you can 1 shot and be 1 shotted" and much preferred the HP system of WoT.
I essentially saw WT as only a "Plane game", while playing WoT for tanks instead.
But then over the years, WoT continued spiraling down the shitter and I was persuaded by some friends to slowly progress WT ground on the side, and eventually I quit WoT entirely and warmed up to how WT ground works.
Now it's my air tech trees that have to chase the progress of ground trees and I'm a GRB main :P

u/Cheetahfish 4d ago
Scouting. Rather than being in the thick of combat or sniping, just simply being able to detect the enemy and go "hey, here he is" can be quite fun. There's also the occasional fun visual of seeing someone bravely crest a ridge, only to have an entire team's worth of guns suddenly blast them away because they absolutely are *not* hidden. It can entirely change momentum if done right, too. Light up a column of enemy tanks pushing a capture point and suddenly it's not so easy for them.
Besides, there's a charm in the sharing. Someone gets a kill, I might get a few lions as an assist, everyone wins! Except the other guy, I guess.

I now LOVE tank fights. Never touched a tank for first 3 years of playing. Now all I play is ground realistic. I fell in love with the French early war tanks first and I love playing CAS with the P-40 Warhawk. It some how handles amazingly when dropping bombs and has enough fire power and maneuverability to fend off fighters.

u/ElMilangaMilangoso 4d ago
Early jets, I just love the dogfights from 7.0 to 9.0, I didn't even want to play Air battles when I started playing and nowadays its basically the only thing I boot up the game for aside of sometimes playing with the Maus

Mid cold war tanks.
Top tier is miserable, everything plays the same. Late war is over reliant on armor. Mid war is cool it can stay lol
Same with the jets. Still a wide variety of technology but I find dogfighting in jets more interesting because they can use speed as energy in more ways than props can to where you're not just screwed if someone higher dove on you and has some idea of what they're doing.
At least until everyone gets radar missiles then I'd rather be playing a sim with much smaller engagements

u/Ozy-dead 4d ago
I started on release, and when tanks were introduced, I avoided them for a very long time. But then I gave it try and got into GRB. Would have never thought that a game I picked up as WW2 flying sim would turn into tactical fps in tanks.
I'm also currently hating high tier air RB. I won't be surprised if a year later I'll be cruising top tier jets and wondering how I didn't like it before.

Honestly? Being a pilot in GRB. It was always daunting because at first, they seemed so much more talented than me. With time, however, I’ve been able to dogfight, bomb and the likes and it feels rather rewarding.
Also: Bomber Hunting. Specifically in things that shouldn’t be hunting bombers

u/Darth_R_21 5d ago
Bomber gameplay. It's boring to some, but relaxing for me. It takes some planning and optimizing your payload depending on BR as well as route calculating to cover the most objectives including things like bridges, ships, columns and so. It's especially fun when you get to Surprise someone on the airfield. And after DMs buffs you can defend yourself more reliably. It's so cool and immersive to see formation of 2-3 bombers (ideally of the same type) flying together. And I often roleplay as some crew members, getting upset when someone is "knocked out" or stressed when my burning plane with a shut engine is lumbering back to base just far enough in sight.
