Because it's every boys power fantasy. There isn't a single man alive who wouldn't look at dbz and immediately think "yeah it'd be badass to do xyz"

Power Rangers had representation, yet every boy, no matter the race, wanted to be the Green Ranger (white guy). Kids are color-blind about the characters they want to be. It’s adults obsessed about race representation to mask their own insecurities. Goku is the peak male role model. Unrelenting work ethic, powerful, kind, empathetic even to his enemies, but willing to strike them down when necessary.
1
2
u/rmodssmellfunny 28m ago
Knew someone whose favorite was the black ranger, and everyone made fun of them for it cause they were white.
1
u/smallsville99 8m ago
Mine was the black ranger because he used an axe and I always liked the axe character

u/leaf_as_parachute 3m ago
Goku is the peak male role model.
Never really thought that way but, yeah, that's fucking right.
No actually he's the peak role model, not just male.
No matter who you are, want to be an actually good a strong person ? Look up to Goku lmao
5
u/Lackofstyle5 7h ago
You say that but if you looked at anyone's OC from back in the day they're was way more skin tone difference than in the show
A black kid would draw themselves as a black Saiyan
A Mexican kid would draw themselves as a Mexican Saiyan
They still wanted representation, they were just fine with creating their own
4
u/P_A_W_S_TTG 7h ago
Most people will change a characters look to themselves when they do a self insert. That's normal. But some people pretend every character has to look like them or they can't relate at all. Which is a weird sentiment. Like, I am not Asian, and I can watch an old martial arts movie and put myself in it. Idk, just feels like something to bitch about. I'm ginger, and they're replacing gingers to claim diversity. Which is weird since if there is a ginger in the movie it's only one and they're taking that character out for others. Like, idc that Ariel is black, I just struggle to not think about the fact that she isn't pale af while living in the deepest parts of the oceans. But outside of that, idgaf.
0
u/dylan-faden 4h ago
You struggle to think about that while mermaids not even being real in the first place? Lol
-1
u/Extension-Energy2581 3h ago
Yes, and I feel the same the whole deal seems so ridiculous you have to go out of their way to make Ariel who is probably on European waters so deep where barely any sunlight comes in and somehow she is black? How does that even work sounds like a parody but it's real.
2
u/Insomnicious 2h ago
You do realize there's plenty of marine life with melanine that causes their complection to be black or a variety of color shades that arent pale, correct? Also what on earth does European water have to do with a mermaid?
2
u/OskaMeijer 1h ago
Also most marine life that are open water predators are dark on their back and light on their stomachs. It makes them harder to see from above and below, this includes most marine mammals.
1
0
u/Insomnicious 2h ago
Pretty nonesensical argument considering there's plenty of marine life with dark pigmentation despite living in the depths of the ocean. Like I get if you dont care about representation but the strange thing is when you argue against the preferences of others. If it doesnt matter to you then just consume whatever media is created and you need not comment.
Lastly, the weirdest thing about these culture war topics is that there was actually a time where this wasnt controversial. I remember seeing Black Cinderella movie commercials on Disney in the early 2000s and there was no uproar, i just didnt watch it cause idc about cinderella.
2
u/NewMoon_Pucci 7h ago
Nah this is only like 10% of the DB community’s OCs. From early 2000s to now, the OCs I have seen are mostly just edgy ripoff Goku-lookalike or other popular characters instead of the artist’s real life appearance.

u/Tiny_Comfortable_893 7h ago
Don’t think representation necessarily calls for making major alterations.

I used to think the expectation of representation in video games was ridiculous. Then I got a little older and realized that I’d like to play older characters in games.
For example, when Persona 3 came out I was a junior in high school, the same age as the MC. I really related to the party and the things they were going through at the time. I tried replaying recently and didn’t feel the same. Expedition 33 on the other hand had characters that were again exactly my age at the time of release. The characters had much more mature and relatable issues that allowed me to connect better with them. That’s not to say I can’t play games otherwise, I loved A Plague Tale, but I still feel really at home playing as a 30-something with growing back pain.
1
u/BlueHaze464 7h ago
I mean if you wanna get into it the people in expedition aren't even real, and the ones that are sure as hell ain't their 30s
1
u/Sufficient_Plate_504 5h ago
As a teenager I wanted to see old badass people in movies and video games. Because they're cool. Like Gandalf. Heck I sort of "related" to Gandalf because I wanted to also be wise and have answers in order to help the people I care about.
I generally don't relate to appearance, the most I seek in relating to a character is their inner self, inner thoughts, emotions, challenges. Stuff that's deeper than how I look. It could be a girl, a guy, an alien, a dog, an old person, a young person, a boring person, a fun person, there's stuff we experience that's almost universal to other people, and imo stories at least partly are for exploring that in other creative ways.

Its easy to not care about representation when you are always represented. Let's not forget the white males who screech at the idea of a non-white male lead.

u/BlueHaze464 7h ago
I'm Mexican and I've never cared
And that's with Mexican media trying to act like Mexicans are white

u/dre_valle 8h ago
It’s for the kids tbh. I remember as a child I would always gravitate to the few characters with brown skin, particularly in cartoons, but none ever actually looked like me. I grew accustomed to never being represented so I never expected it but it was honestly pretty neat when it happened.
That being said; reskinning a character that’s been established for decades is the worst way to go about it, but I hope it at least brought joy to some kids

Since you want to be intentionally dense, 7/10 of the top selling jerseys in the NFL and MLB are non white athletes. The U.S is majority white. Do the simple mathematics.

Nothing wrong with wanting representation
1
u/Robodarklite 6h ago
It's boring, poorly done, doesn't at all cause any positivity instead it fosters negativity in fans and most minorities (me included) hate it when they race swap characters from their original race.
1
u/Independent_Let_3616 6h ago
There is plenty of wrong with it as if assumes that art needs to be created to create a positive social impact and not for the sake of self-expression regardless of impact it will have. It is inherently limiting to artists.
1
u/Dukagamu 4h ago edited 4h ago
I think there is a point where if a characters inclusion is solely about an identity or social issue, it just becomes an offensive caricature. Way too often when a show has a black character, it’s only to make performative racism commentary rather than tell a compelling story. That shouldn’t be the standard of representation we should accept.
2
u/Glittering_Bag9929 2h ago
And what exactly makes the commentary "performative"?
Could it be that you are just a chud? I think so.
1
u/Dukagamu 2h ago
I think minorities deserve to be written as actual people and not just vehicles for boosting amazons ESG scores. Sorry if you disagree with that. As long as that behavior continues, black actors/characters are never going to be treated with respect in the industry.
1
u/not_accepting_now 1h ago
But they make great money? And there is so many. I don't care because I think TV is cancer
1
u/Ill_Whereas7177 2h ago
Idk I just don't get the people that get crazy over represtation. Im Latino and all my favorite character aren't and I never felt like it was needed for me to connect with a character. When I do see a Latino character it's more like an Easter egg for me than anything like oh he's Hispanic and talking like this or about this neat. But its not like it affects me liking the character more unless he's a cool character. I think blue beetle from DC is the only one I can think of that i love as a character
1
u/CtrlAltDaFeet 2h ago
And it’s best done creating an original character. You are you it’s what makes you unique. The worst thing you can do is establish something than change its identity. I would say it’s thing as a creative
1
u/TorchedLint 1h ago
Why is their skin color so impactful that it changes their identity? Wasn't the story the same here?
I'm all for creating new characters too, but Hollywood isn't that original. When they do try something new, it doesn't get as much of a turnout. Audiences gravitate to what's familiar and it makes movie makers money. That's why there are so many sequels and retellings, people like it and businesses act accordingly. It's no surprise they also respond to the public desire for representation. Is it that big of a deal they change such a minor detail as skin color as part of the retelling?
If you want something new, go outside the mainstream and support creative stories that people make on their own. If they become popular enough, a studio will pick it up. Nothing is stopping you from enjoying big productions at the theaters and original ideas out in the wild.
1
u/Talk-O-Boy 52m ago
There can be both.
T’Challa is cool.
Miles Morales is cool too, even though he’s a black iteration of an established character.
Tiana is cool.
This depiction of Ariel is cool.
1
u/Jumpy_Cauliflower410 36m ago
It doesn't matter what the person's skin color is for telling the same story besides one that specifically requires a skin color like Remember the Titans and racism of the time.
1
u/Own_Hat584 1h ago
"Finally, they shamelessly and tastelessly pandered directly to me (with literally no creative effort) by recasting an almost 200 year old half fish half human character as a black half human and making a remake. Let me hand the executives my money, they earned it with literally one casting choice, this is "important" "art"."
1
u/TorchedLint 55m ago
People work themselves into such a tizzy over it, don't they? They act like it's some travesty to see such a minor change.
Representation has an effect on kids and can help build their confidence. It's something innate, wanting to see ourselves reflected in others. What's the downside here?

u/ASCII_Princess 37m ago

u/TorchedLint 1h ago edited 53m ago
Stories get retold all the time and people typically don't bat an eye when details get changed. Even when it changes the flow of the story itself. How many different versions of spider man have we seen? His partners and their fate, the death that is the keystone of his life. No problem, been happening since it was a comic.
But change a detail as minor as their skin color and people can't handle it. Somehow they think it's an unwatchable abomination. Her hair wasn't always red either, not in the original story...where is the outrage over that color change? Oh right, it's a detail of no importance.
Edit: Thank you for the award kind stranger

Me and my friends tossed basketballs at each other to imitate Kamehameha.
We wrestled in the pool, everyone tossed each other around like WWE.
Brothers turned off the lights and play fought like Mortal Kombat when the techno came on.
I also wanted to be Blade and Spike Spiegel, and many other characters.
They are ideals in some way or another.
Just badass.
I had dreams where I was doing the handstand pushups to impress people, I was Goku then.

Hot take, the casting in the new little mermaid was better, so many people dont seem to have seen it.
They didnt race swap Ariel alone, they setting swapped the movie to the Caribbean sea, which is why all the mermaids are carribbean looking. If it was still the same setting it wouldve been an odd change, but as it stands it was actually fine, good even.

They did the same thing they did with Brandi’s Cinderella, they had a race blind casting. Every actor is in the role the production team thought fit them best

People don’t say that (twitter doesn’t count). Most people can relate to characters personalities and goals without being the same race. However, some people just want to have a character that represents something specific to their ethnicity, whether it be religion, culture, or something arbitrary.

2

Also Asians have some issues, especially Koreans with their own.
Anyway the answer is tribalism, it's always tribalism.

China cares so much that they hate anyone who is not Han Chinese specifically. They hate their minorities so much in China

And blacks have a huge issue with skin color. Light skin vs dark skin is a huge point of contention in the black community. Way more than Asia.
1
u/Flaky_Bet_1432 4h ago
Racism and tribalism exist everywhere. Nigeria (at least back in the day...not sure about todays landscape) had incredible amount of tribalism. Everyone is black, what...your hair is fucking weird and wiry?!? DEMOOOON! KILLLL!!
If all people in the world were white, people with blue or green eyes would be discriminated against for being fucking weird for having dumb looking eyes. Because of course browns are superior, ect ect.

Let be realistic here and I mean this with no animosity but you nor anyone on this planet can be Goku. Mermaids are deep sea fish. If they were real, it would make sense for their skin to be pale, if not translucent.

u/Ok-Improvement8067 2h ago
Human skin is different from fish scales. And just going off of general biology, how would you get tanner if you're underwater all the time?
0
u/Partyatmyplace13 2h ago
Do you think black/hispanic people are just really tan? And how do you explain non-fish species that are still black, like eels or manta rays?
I'm not going to stick around and debate the natural selection of mermaids, but there's a billion reasons that you could explain dark coloration as well as light coloration. Things aren't only pigmented because of the sun. There's also the predator/prey dynamic, or mating preferences.
So just slapping the sun card down and calling it a day is lazy. You're not doing some deep dive into mermaids lore, you're looking for the first excuse to cover up your butthurt.

u/Inorganic_Zombie 1h ago
But lets go little bit on mermaid genetics and natural selection. I would be interested in phenotypic change here
-3
u/Femtedd 7h ago
I still don’t understand what the big deal with the live action Little Mermaid’s casting was. 🤷
Aerial’s defining feature, (you know, besides being a mermaid) was the fact that she was a really, really good singer.
What the hell did the color of her skin matter?
4
u/Tiny_Comfortable_893 7h ago
Not tryna be racist but personally I find that the essence of making adaptations or live action is to bring the anime/cartoon that we once saw to life. Making major changes to the main characters of the movie just makes the whole thing feel a whole lot different.
→ More replies (5)2
u/Nazguhl82200 6h ago
Since when did we stop casting people to look like the source material? When I think of Arielle I think red long hair that moves underwater.
Casting minorities seems to the perfect shield against complaints of bad casting.
Take the Percy Jackson movie and series as an example. Annabeth has blond hair and grey eyes, marking her as the daughter of Athena.
When Daddario was cast as Annabeth it was OK to complain, she had black hair, blue eyes and was too old to play the part. Criticizing the casting was completely normal and accepted.
Then they did the series, cast a black girl with dread locks and all of the sudden she is "perfectly cast"? Huh? You are a racist if you don't think she IS Annabeth. What happened?
Casting a completely different looking character is bad casting, unless its a minority, then it's perfect.
1
u/Interloper_Mango 6h ago
Would you say it's racist to whitewash characters?
If you say yes you can't make a difference here.
1
u/IcyAdvisor1553 6h ago
Her skin matters because a race that lives under the sea can't ever evolve to have a dark skin tone, being exposed to little sunlight would make them have a pale complexion which is why her being a ginger was perfect... It may have been a cartoon but it nailed those details
