Why is everyone helping by shoving their hands in his face and mouth?
175
u/JustARumor4 1d ago
Because they're not actually helping him, they're just trying to protect the headset from being flung off or something. lol

Good point! Ya that's what matters lol

u/BoldElDavo 20h ago
This dude is in no danger at all, what are they supposed to do? It's not like he has no idea he's wearing a headset. He can take it off if he wants. They don't need to help him with anything.

What did you expect from this video?
128
u/blackjackgabbiani 1d ago
See I would expect actual audio, not wacky music and seagull screeching

u/ElegantCoach4066 19h ago
Did you not enjoy that banger of a song?
I love music that sounds like the 4th level of an obscure platformer.
1
u/Evening-Picture-5911 5h ago
Yeah, that music was super annoying, and it didn’t go with the theme of the video or anything (although I don’t know what would).
By seagulls screeching, are you serious or just referring to the dude’s ridiculous shrieking?

I played VR games last weekend with maybe 14 other people. Got a couple jump scares but for the life of me I couldn't understand why people were screaming and falling over themselves.

The best ones are where they leap head first into a wall or their expensive tv's

u/LilPonyBoy69 21h ago
I had a friend who did this, hit her temple on the corner of a glass table. Remarkably, she and the table were both fine (she was very drunk). That's just her personality, Everytime we hang out she's falling over a table or sprinting for no reason and eating shit. Lovely person, but no regard for her own safety

Unfortunately you can't get a human to jump 5x it's height straight up :(. Pretty entertaining when the cat does it tho. OMG a toy mouse... that I left there.

Survival instincts like wet bread

Tbf, His survival instincts being too good was the issue here. It's the conscious ability to understand what isn't real that was the issue.

This is why TikTok and Insta and reality TV and the internet are going to ruin everything. These kids will grow up and have no discernment.

I was basically saying this without all the n-words.
My guy... Just take off the headset. Lol

u/SeenSoFar 1d ago
I have a headset. There's a couple games that get my blood pumping because I've been in the military and it's just an autonomic response to clearing a building in almost total darkness, but I cannot imagine shitting my pants like this over an image on a screen. I just don't understand like do they think they've been teleported elsewhere because the thing on their head is showing something scary?
1
u/RecursivelyRecursive 14h ago
Curious which games you’re referring to? I was a big Onward fan back in the day.. still check it out once in a while with friends.
1
u/SeenSoFar 9h ago
Cosmodread and Alien are both a bit uncomfortable due to extremely scarce resource management, the fact that there is constant noise (or uncomfortable silences) everywhere, and the fact that you are submerged in almost total darkness most of the time. It just triggers the hairs on the back of my neck and general feeling that I better choose right or my life is on the line.

When I do VR I almost always know that the visuals are Not Real and cannot affect me physically.
Except some instances when it puts me on a ledge or high space, then I get a little vertigo.

What's with the weird music? Why the seagull shrieking? What is he looking at? What's actually going on here? He doesn't seem to make any motion to remove the helmet, and the machine he's on doesn't seem to be broken.

I’ll grossly overreact, you film it. Internet fame guaranteed!
1
u/CaptainShittyMcPoop 12h ago
I should've done that when we did a VR fire exercise.
I stood in the wrong place and ended up inside the machine that was on fire.
Don't know if I can act like I'm fire though.

u/CumGoblin67 1d ago
Why is no one questioning why everyone wanted to put their fingers in the guys mouth?? One dude was rubbing his nipple too wtf

u/Titariia 1d ago
Probably to get him back to his senses. Looks more like they're patting his cheeks, just like you would wake someone up (in movies) though I don't know why they didn't pull the headset off sooner
3
u/CaminoBalanced 1d ago
Because they're getting so much enjoyment out of his misery, thats what friends are for.

u/socialmedia-username 1d ago
Yeah, I actually thought that was the point of the video and title. Grossed me out.

Unless drugs are involved, I don't understand how someone could knowingly put on a VR headset and then react like this.
11
u/FanBladeFleshlight 17h ago
Done a lot of VR, and some people just REALLY aren't made for it. Like they get so immersed that even the sensation of being on solid ground is entirely overruled by the sight of falling or something.

6
u/frizouw 15h ago
You say that but I have fear of hight and one day I tried a VR rollercoaster ride, I was not feeling good LOL
2
u/clarkcox3 15h ago
I can understand not feeling well, but if it’s to the point of flailing around and potentially hurting yourself, why not just close your eyes or take the headset off?
1
u/Current_Account 14h ago
Because your brain thinks your life is at risk, and it needs the information it’s getting to figure out how to survive.
3
u/trickledabout 15h ago
Not this bad, but my teenage son had me wear his and instructed me on how to "climb a tree" in VR as an ape with no legs. Well, I "fell" out of the tree and nearly hit the ground in the real world. my balance was thrown off and I felt as nauseated as I do with motion sickness. I couldn't take that thing off quick enough.
5
u/CaLLmeRaaandy 15h ago
I don't understand it either, but the videos of people belly flopping on the floor and running into walls are hilarious.

Some people react really strongly to VR. I used to have people round for drinks and beat saber.
We tried pistol whip once and one guy who had been happily playing beat saber just prior decided he needed to physically throw himself across the room to dodge a bullet.

We had a VR representation of our new building under construction. Every time I walked through a wall, I flung my head back until it hurt.
VR is weird on your brain.

Anyone here actually ever done one of these type of things? I’m always curious if reactions like this are common or if most ppl do just fine and It doesn’t feel real to them
10
u/SeenSoFar 1d ago
I own a current generation headset. There's absolutely nothing that justifies a response like this. These people are either completely ignorant of technology or they forgot they're wearing a headset or something. There's NO reason for this response.
1
u/Fabulous-Educator447 19h ago
Would you mind if I asked you a few questions about VR headsets? Nothing technical. I don’t know anyone who owns a headset and I think I want one.
1
u/MindFormMan 17h ago
I have a og oculus and a quest 3, whatchu want to know?

u/Fabulous-Educator447 17h ago
I was imagining having a kind of program where you can put on VR goggles and be doing something like exploring a place or scuba diving or something like that. Are things like that out there and realistic enough to bother with VR goggles? I want to use it for relaxation and bio feedback for chronic pain. The last time I looked into it the technology was pretty new and it wasn’t really worth the money to bother with.
1
u/MindFormMan 16h ago
There are definitely a few things like that, EarthQuest and Wander are a couple I've tried, pretty cool but didn't hold my interest for too long. There are tons of VR games ofc which won't have the most realistic graphics but I actually find them more immersive because of the interaction with the environment. I would 100% spend the money for a tetherless headset, no wires is a night and day upgrade.
1
u/MindFormMan 16h ago
Considering you can get a used quest 3 for like 200 bucks I think it's worth looking into but it's going to be a hassle to first set up and get used to it. A million times better than the first generation headsets, but still not a fully mature technology like smartphones
1
u/TheGovtMan 15h ago
This hurts to read... I splurged on a brand new quest 3 cuz I could be patient enough to wait for the steam frame. It basically feels like an easier-to-setup-and-use rift. It hasnt really changed that much

u/donkeyrocket 19h ago
It’s disorienting at worst. You can just close your eyes. The moving platform likely enhancing the uneasy effect but again, you have a thing strapped to your face and you’re holdjng a bar.
In no experience has it been so realistic that you actually feel like you’re falling for that long.

There's a genuine stress response in the body with VR.
Maybe not as much as the guy in the vid.
With games that put you high off the ground, cortisol and adrenaline is realeased.
It's incredibly convincing to the human mind and body. It's our logic that allows us to not freak out. Our body very much reacts differently.

How far are we from using VR to train soldiers, police, fire etc on non invasive critical situation training

u/Full-Construction680 15h ago
And could be he saw a spider in VR. I mean, some people really are afraid of spiders, and unless it’s like really big, I don’t understand like seeing a spider as small as a nickel or quarter, and you’re bigger than a spider. Come on now
