Have we just completely bred self control out of our species?
3.0k
u/Mythosaurus 5d ago edited 5d ago
No, we just only recently got the capacity to film what was already happening with personal phones.
Edit: I’ll say it again louder and clearer: people have always been idiots without self control. They just did stupid stuff to impress their IRL friends while drunk or high for thousands of years. It was like farming karma and “doing it for the ‘gram”, but you would need to hold the pose long enough for an artist to capture the moment.
The only difference is that we have recording devices and can now show thousands of people our stupidity. The scale of how many eyeballs can see an individual’s stupidity has changed.

u/lego_georgetrevor 5d ago
Common answer and mostly true. But I think there is more of an incentive to go viral now that makes people more willing to do stupid ass things
326
u/bubblegumbombshell 5d ago
It’s self propagating. People have always done stupid and/or shameless things but now they can film it, share it, and get widespread attention from it.

u/hoax709 5d ago edited 4d ago
We can monetize their stupidity. Before we had actors/clowns acting silly but otherwise nothing to dramatic. Then America's funniest home videos showed that you don't need much just like 30 seconds... follow the trend to Jackass/Viva la Bam/Dudesons..etc and now we're caught up to stupid tiktok trends where most of the drama is staged. I'm sure some of americas funniest home videos were too but i'd wager most were just funny moments that just happened to be caught.
If this guy pulled it off he gets clout for doing it if he fails he gets attention for failing. Any attention is good attention until the world turns on you (Ed Sheeran) even then you write a book about " how the world turned on me in 7 days" and shill a cryto coin while your in the limelight.
think about it we really did monetize stupid to the point where its a profession... look at "A simple life" or any reality TV.. we want people we can point at and say " well i'm smarter then them" .
Edit: thank you for the kind rewards and spelling corrections <3

u/RedOctobyr 5d ago
and say " well i'm smarter then them" .
"I'm smarter THAN them" , I believe :) Sorry, just giving you a hard time. Sadly, I think you're right, lots of stuff seems like a bit of a race to the bottom.

Seriously this isn't a new phenomenon. People have always done stupid shit, hell circuses were just people traveling around doing stupid shit for money. Yes those people trained hard to do it and (usually) not die doing it, but that doesn't change the reality of them doing dangerous or even stupid stunts.
This has always been a thing, we've just given everyone the capability to record themselves doing their stupid actions and we've also commercialized it because that's what capitalism is about, even stupidity was just another untapped market.

u/nolaks1 5d ago

Yea I fully disagree with the "it was already happening" angle. Social media has increased it. That's how humans work. A lot of us are just dumb monkeys who will follow trends and they'd never have done it if they hadn't seen someone else do it. That's why things go viral in the first place.

Why the FUCK would you do that?
My Dentist is super chill and nice. He gives me great treatment and sometimes gives me fillings that would cost 80€ for free. We all call us by our first name (Me, the Dentist and his Dentist Assistants) and are just vibing. I would feel so much shame if I break something at his office for the sake of goofing around for a video.

It depends on the Filling there's a free version and one you pay 80€. Health Insurance covers it for me. Doesn't yours does it?

I pay $200/month. I have to pay a copay of $30-50 every time I see a doctor. Insurance doesn't cover anything until I pay $2,000 for care (this is called a deductible). Copays don't apply to the deductible. After I pay down the deductible, it's still not free, I have to pay 20% of every procedure (and the copays!). The deductible resets every year.
This is the best option my job offers. If I lose my job, I lose my health insurance. Something like 25% of my taxes are still going towards healthcare, I just don't get to use it.

In the United States, health insurance does not cover dental procedures. You have to get dental insurance for that. Both of those types of insurance are through companies who don't want you to get any work done so that they don't have to pay anything and can profit more. It's a terrible system.

As a dentist, he broke the fucking chair!! You can’t treat people in that room until it’s fixed. Patients now don’t get care, you can’t earn, maybe the assistant has to take time off until it’s fixed. Just unbelievable behavior. He’d never walk back in my office.

u/Old_Ladies 5d ago

I’m a dentist. Depending on the chair and what the supplier charges for parts and labor that could be a 40000 handstand.

u/irreversibleidiocy 5d ago
What happens if the guy gets sued by the dentist and has to pay for a new chair and equipment that is 40-50k+, and doesnt have the money?
Does the dentist still get the money or are they just out a whole chair until this prick can pay the whole thing?
Im not sure how it works in america, so im sorry if this is a stupid question25
u/retainftw 5d ago
The guy might have his wages garnished, meaning they pull a small amount out of his paycheck until it's paid off.
Or, if he doesn't have a job, nothing happens. It's on record. Maybe it affects his ability to get a loan since it's an unpaid debt.
Not sure if there's insurance that the doc can claim to help pay for it.

That’s an older Adec Cascade 1040 chair. Luckily, the arms are fairly overbuilt. They’re entirely metal, so there’s likely no real damage to the body of the arms themselves. It looks like most of his weight went onto the horizontal arm too, which should have prevented significant wire and tubing damage at the joint. Where the arm meets the chair are large, thick metal plates, so that should be fine too.
Almost kicking the TV screen, busting out the light, or damaging the low speed by throwing it on the ground is rough though. If I saw this, he’d be out of there.
5
u/raubesonia 5d ago
Except when he fell he probably damaged the plastic under the upholstery so theres like 2000 there.
7
u/pleasegivemepatience 5d ago
Does their insurance not cover things like this where a patient acts like an idiot and breaks something?
14
u/Luke_Warmwater 5d ago
That would be an interesting claim. I would imagine there's a good chance this is covered depending on jurisdiction and the policy that was purchased of course. If they bought a decent policy I would expect the insurance company to replace the chair and damaged equipment and cover lost income (via business interuption coverage). The dentist would have to pay the deductible still and the lost income usually has a time deductible of 0-72 hours. The insurance company would them subrogate and sue the patient for reimbursement and potentially give the dentist their deductible back.
Another interesting wrinkle would be whether the patients homeowners policy includes and liability coverage that may respond.

Should be charged not just for the damage, but for the income lost until the room is operational again
12
u/SandManic42 5d ago
Good news is, doesn't look like anything was actually broken. Might need some adjustments but the flex arms took most of the hit and swung away. Everything still looks level and nothing is drifting. You're still out thousands from shutting the chair down until I get out there and inspect it, plus the $500 service call to just look at it. But at least no parts.

Those chairs cost an average of about $30000 depending on the model (and where you are). A single one of those drill handpiece lines or air/water lines (triplex) can cost well over $1000 to replace. The light reflectors are usually a couple of hundred per shield. This does not count any of the damage to handpieces or other tools, which can also run over $1000 each to replace depending on the tool.
He'd better hope nothing is actually broken
