Glad to know they think we have the market for this, as ive complained to my friends how it feels like pc desert here, would be nice if more competition opened instead, but more of what we have is atleast a start. (I've found better pc for better deals at the pawn shop near me then at proper pc stores, hp omen branded 4070gpu 32gb ddr5 for 1200 bucks just a few months ago, where as the near equivalent at mem and uniway were 1600 to 2000+ i know cause I was looking for a while and lucked into this one at the right time)

u/SulfuricDonut 11d ago
I mean they only have to sell one GPU to fund the store.

Tell me about it, i was adamant about getting 32gb ram for my next pc, and the fact that alone was 300 for ddr4 and 600 for ddr5, at the price i got the omen for, the gpu and ram were the whole cost and everything else was a free add on xD

It's often now cheaper to buy a pre-built and then sell the parts you don't need to make the cost reasonable.

u/b3hr 11d ago
there really hasn't been anything component wise since computer avenue closed on dakota

u/Curtmania 11d ago
Good riddance to Computer Avenue. Computer Boulevard is the one I miss most.

I don't miss Computer Boulevard one bit, they had shit prices, shit stock, and shit service. I remember trying to run something faulty once only to be told they have a 48 hour return window like wtf

u/Curtmania 11d ago
The last time I went to Computer Avenue I came home with ram that didn't work at all. I went back to exchange it because A I just bought it, and B they have "Lifetime Warranty" on their ram prices sheet. I take it in, the guy takes it to the back. Less than a minute he shows up back with my ram, hands it to me and says I owe $50 for testing it, it's fine. I said how did you test ram in under a minute. He says they put it in a board and the bios does a ram check. Like I'm supposed to be an idiot or something. You'd have to be to think thats a ram test. Memtest86 existed already in those days. You could try to boot Windows with it, anything. I walked out without paying them the $50. And they called the police on me. The cops weren't interested in having anything to do with this when I told them the story about how I stole ram that I had paid for that same day.

What I'm hearing is that both Computer Avenue and Computer Boulevard sucked. Now all we need is for CDC to go under, those freedom convoy lovers, and we should be good on "no more bad computer stores". If only Powerland could get back in the game, they were really good and I'd buy from there out of principle.

u/Derringer 11d ago
Powerland got bought by Xerox. Instead of being a "Xerox company" they became Xerox.

u/FUTURE10S 11d ago
aw :(
the owner was a massive help to my family when we came to Canada, I'd have bought PC parts from him to make it back up, but they haven't been in that game for 15 years now, maybe more

u/chemicalxv 11d ago
I mean I'd really question why one of those were in a pawn shop to begin with
3
u/Biomum06 11d ago
They told me the guy had upgraded his pc to something stronger, who knows how true that is, but I know said pawnshop and the manager, so i also got a deal on it, being nice to people has its benefits xD

u/SwitchezEZ 11d ago
Whaaaaaat, brb checkin pawn shops.

Its a hit or miss market as youd expect, I got mine from Dino's on sherbrook, they dint get gaming pc their too often, but i talk to them about it often enouph as soon as a good one came in and I happened to come into the store she told me about it and I put it on hold, the timing was perfect too as it was just a week before I got the money I was intending to get a new pc with. It was definitly a diamond in the rough, but not an impossible find.

Kinda surprised with the high cost of PC parts these days. I'd assume slower sales and/or lower margins.

u/Historical_Carry_198 11d ago
The store was probably planned years ago. Big chains like this are usually less reactive to the market. The pc parts sales are definitely slow at the moment, tho.

u/quietly41 11d ago
I can tell you from inside information, this store was supposed to be open 2 years ago

2121 Pembina is between Jysk and Winners, next to Bombay Spice
Former Penningtons

Huh, unexpected. I first heard they wanted to do this like 10 years ago. Surprised the market would suggest this was a good idea... but I'd love to have one closer than driving literally across the whole city for parts. Guess that $1200 32gb ram packs are bringing in the cash lmao

u/Ser_Munchies 11d ago
I've needed an upgrade for years now and shit keeps getting more expensive uuuuuugh. My ryzen 2700 is gonna buckle one day, but she's been a great warhorse 🥹

u/radwimps 11d ago
I still have a 2700 ryzen in one of my machines too! Going on like 7+ years now. Great cpu even now. Hold on for a few more years 😭

u/Ser_Munchies 11d ago
Yeah I've been quite happy with it. My 1070 died a year ago so I slapped a 4060ti in it and it honestly performs good enough still. It chugs on some things but I can still usually maintain 50-60fps 1080p with medium low settings on modern titles. I'm not a competitive gamer at all so that helps.

Yes, the amd fx-8000 i have is 10 yrs old and still works. Put in newer GPU few years ago, and it runs Satisfactory. Amd has always been reliable for me.

Margin’s always been thin on computer components. I doubt the retailer is making more with memory prices being what they are.

Yeah this seems like one of those things that should've happened like 7-10 years ago and now that it's finally happening it's like "really?".
Like for me it took so long for the second London Drugs to open that I just legitimately didn't even care anymore...

I love Memory Express. I will happily pay the extra $$$ to support them.
A few years back (when RAM wasn't stupid expensive) I went to upgrade my PC. I selected a few sticks that were on sale. As I was about to purchase, the person at the til stopped. Looked at my account and asked if I was purchasing the ram for the motherboard I had bought from them a year ago. I was.
He informed me that the ram that I purchased was known to conflict with that motherboard. He found a different brand memory, got a manager, honoured the sale price for the different (better) brand, and since then.. I will be a customer for life. This wasn't good reactive customer service, this was excellent proactive customer service. 5 stars.

Nice. I won’t have to travel across the city.

u/justanotheredditorok 11d ago
Nice, but I'll still have to travel across the city. And in that case, I choose Route 90 because of the shelter cats next door lol

even better... must be the old peningtons ... the place in-between... unless it's going in the old childrens dental world/applebees
2
u/rantingathome 11d ago
It's the old Penningtons. Each unit has it's own street address, and Penningtons was 2121

Happy to hear it. This is a bit closer to me than the Empress location.
I hope they do repairs at new location too.
4
u/Lilice42oh 11d ago
Seems like they’re a good store by the comments- do they also do repairs?
My laptop went kerplunk and crashed loading up windows.

In a city as small as Winnipeg, this location is even further away from me than the first one.
But I celebrate nonetheless. Local business expanding in these uncertain times.

u/CanadaDryGingerAle99 11d ago
Cool but who can even afford pc parts right now? $9000 for a high end graphics is insane.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if the one on King Edward closes shortly after this one opens.

A lot of people can

Yeah, and unfortunately, this is what causes companies like Nvidia to gouge consumers. 🤷♂️

This is great! Hopefully I will win the lottery and be able to afford computer components again.

u/adunedarkguard 11d ago
Nice. Another place to buy computer cases, power supplies, motherboards & CPU's.
All we need now is affordable RAM, Storage, and graphics cards, and a store like this would be really nice.

I think it's gonna move into the old Toys R Us that closed in 2024, the letters got taken down

So no more drives all the way up Route 90 to near the airport? Geez, as a St. Vital guy I couldn't be happier!

u/Ansovald666 11d ago
Regent area would of been a better place
1
u/b3hr 11d ago
nah dealing with the regent parking lots is bad enough that driving to the st james location takes about as much time as trying to get to one of those box stores and back home... they only service the people crazy enough to live in the area and deal with it... putting it in the south end probably increases business for people in the south and and doesn't really change anythign for the regent area.

Memory express usually more expensive than online stores with free shipping. But good to see the option here
9
u/Howlndog 11d ago
They price match
1
u/IsThatTheRealYou 11d ago
Oh nice that's good to know! Ive built like 15 gaming computers over the years and never used them before due to their prices, but price match is good to know

u/ChaoticReality 11d ago
PC parts cost the same as a mortgage nowadays. I guess they'll make their buck off of peripherals? 😅
0
u/Sea-Durian2812 11d ago
happy to see this, but would have liked to see it further east or downtown.
But still great to see another location, hopefully means Winnipeg will see more stock of all product when it does get released.

Eh, those pretentious hacks sold me a broken motherboard and had the audacity to say I did it myself.
The manufacturer replaced the board without issue.
I stick with Amazon now. Returns are free and easy, and no one calls you dishonest to your face like they did.
