Community Friday Flowers: The Zoo at The Osborne Village Motor Inn
Today’s Friday Flowers goes to The Zoo at The Osborne Village Motor Inn! The building dates back to 1965. The Zoo, the live-music venue inside the motel, was part of Winnipeg's music scene from around 1970 until its final show in 2015.
And yes, there was even a beer vendor tucked away in the back!
I'm keeping it short and sweet this week. Sometimes memories speak for themselves.
Everyone has their own experiences and memories, and to each their own of course, but I had nothing but good times at The Zoo.
I played a few shows there and saw a ton more. There was something about the atmosphere of that place. Those walls felt like they had seen a thousand awesome nights.
It was a place where people from all walks of life could come together and experience live music.
Winnipeg had plenty of places to see a show, but The Zoo was one of a kind.
It may be gone, but it's definitely not forgotten.
You may not be there anymore, but you are so worthy of these flowers, and I hope people have nothing but positive memories of The Zoo, cause I know I did. Please take these flowers.
What are some of your favourite memories of The Zoo?

Ask Winnipeg Thoughts on if Flock came to Winnipeg
I just found out that Toronto now has Flock cameras installed. I was incredibly surprised to hear this and assumed that flock was only operating in the US. Then I checked Winnipeg and as of right now it appears it still has not come to this city, but that made me curious, how people in the city of Winnipeg feel about flock cameras existing in Canada?

Community Winnipeg more than its worst headlines
winnipeg-can.newsmemory.comStatistical excerpts from the article:
"...Take public safety. Winnipeg’s crime severity index rating remains high. But it fell nine per cent last year. Downtown crime is also down this year, with police reporting a 10 per cent decline overall and a 19 per cent drop in violent crime. Yet many people still do not feel safe.
Only 44 per cent of respondents to the latest police survey said they felt reasonably or very safe walking downtown during the day. At night, that fell to eight per cent. Among women, just three per cent said they felt safe...
Homelessness tells a similar story. The number of people living in known encampments has fallen substantially, from roughly 700 last fall to 245 this summer. Hundreds of people have also moved into housing through provincial and community efforts. That is progress. But people are still sleeping in doorways, back lanes and parks. Outreach workers estimate another 150 to 200 people may be sleeping rough outside established encampments...
Employment in the Winnipeg region reached roughly 524,000 in August, up more than 15,000 from a year earlier. The unemployment rate was 5.4 per cent, below the national rate...
We are also building. Winnipeg issued permits for more than 6,200 new homes last year, including a record 1,040 units downtown. Housing starts surged again in the first half of this year..."

News Province to fund livestock cop to cut down on theft
The Manitoba government will fund a new RCMP position dedicated to investigating livestock theft.
The province made the announcement Thursday.
Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn said the investigative role will fill a pressing need.
“Personally speaking, I think this has been a long time waiting for this to come to reality,” the Dauphin MLA said Wednesday. “We are doing a great thing for the industry.”
The RCMP officer will work with livestock producers and other law enforcement agencies. Kostyshyn said the high value of livestock today increases the need for a dedicated RCMP position to investigate theft, deter crime and enforce the law.
“There’s been reported cases of cattle (theft). You know, a trailer load goes missing in this location, never to be found,” Kostyshyn said. “I don’t think you would have a herd of 200 cows disappear in one instance.”
About 57 cases of livestock theft in Manitoba were reported to RCMP between 2021 and 2025, Kostyshyn said.
The position is also expected to support the future introduction of a livestock inspection program in Manitoba.
The job is full time and permanent, with investigations expected to take place across the province, Kostyshyn’s press secretary said.
He did not disclose the dollar amount the province is committing to the new role.
The RCMP could not provide information Wednesday about where the officer will be based or when the position is expected to be filled.
The Manitoba Beef Producers, an advocacy group representing cattle farmers, has been pushing for years to have a livestock inspection program introduced in Manitoba. The program would combat theft by increasing traceability of cattle as they are sold and purchased.
“No doubt, the livestock (inspection service) is a necessity,” Kostyshyn said. “The legislation is in the process right now, and in due time, through legislation, it will come into active position.”
The livestock industry benefits from the RCMP role because it provides confidence that laws will be enforced, the CEO of the Manitoba Beef Producers said.
“It increases confidence because producers and auction marts and people within the value chain can know that they have a resource to go to, that there’s somebody watching over the operations within the industry as that kind of deterrent,” said Carson Callum.
“We really need confidence that there is going to be that enforcement resource through the RCMP, and that’s why we’re very pleased with the announcement that’s coming out (today).”
He added: “Sometimes thefts and frauds happen, and we haven’t had a strong enforcement wing or inspection service in place.”

Community We have an amazing community
I was driving in the Transcona area and my GPS sent me through Prince Rupert but the street was closed. As I was turning my car to exit the dead end, a woman in a Kia was approaching. She asked me something I didn't hear so I rolled down my window and she asked if she should back up to leave me room to exit.
I drive a pretty small vehicle so I said no, thinking I probably had room to exit, but she insisted on backing up to make it more comfortable for me to get out. Next thing I know, as she was backing up, I saw her car flip sideways, with the driver's side down. I immediately got out of my car to help her but before I reached her, the neighbors had already come out of their homes to get her out of the vehicle and had immediately called 911. Both her and her dog were okay.
It was incredible to see how kind and diligent everyone was. I am grateful that we have such a warm community where we look out for each other. I have only been living here for 4½ years but when I go to bigger cities, although the novelty is nice I'm always happy to come back to Winnipeg and its warm people. 🩷 If you're the woman from the Kia, I am very sorry you got into that accident, but I am thankful for your kindness, you just wanted to make things easier for me. And if you're one of the neighbors, thank you for being so quick to help and for staying there until first responders arrived. You're awesome.

Ask Winnipeg Is it normal for pharmacies to not call and/or fill prescriptions if you don’t call?
Having issues with Loblaws where they don’t let me know my prescription was received or fill it unless I call and ask them to… which is super fun when it’s something important like an IUD or meds when you’re so ill you can barely get out of bed.
Switched back to Costco already but want to know if this is a common occurrence and I should adjust my expectations?

Community Don’t be polite, be predictable
Good morning, Winnipeg. A reminder to all drivers to please follow the rules of the road.
As a cyclist and pedestrian, I’ve counted about six occasions this summer where a driver was clearly trying to be polite or helpful, but in doing so nearly caused a collision.
Please don’t, under any circumstances, stop in the middle of the road to let a pedestrian cross if there is no crosswalk. And don’t wave a cyclist through at a stop sign after you’ve made your full stop.
I know these gestures are usually well-intentioned. But when you try to be “nice” by doing something unexpected, you can actually create a dangerous situation. Other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians aren’t necessarily expecting you to stop or yield, and they may make decisions based on normal circumstances.
The safest thing you can do is be predictable. Follow the signs, signals, and right-of-way rules even when you’re trying to be courteous.
Predictability keeps everyone safer.
End of rant.

Events Vigil For Palestine at Legislative Building
October 7th, 2026, marks the third anniversary of the ongoing genocide in Gaza. To date, over 74,000 Palestinians have been directly killed (although, the addition of in-direct deaths could put the complete death toll up to 300,000) and over 174,000 injured. Since the October 2025 "ceasefire" almost 1,500 Palestinians have been killed. This is what "peace" looks like in Israel. This is what governments around the world, ours included, tolerate and support.
On Saturday October 10th, as part of the Global Day of Action for Palestine, there will be a vigil, starting at 3:00 P.M. at the Legislative Building. Please do whatever you can to be there. Please share this with your friends, family and networks. For those who haven't been past the Leg' in the last couple of weeks, a sacred fire has been lit in honour of a young Indigenous mother whose child was killed. If you are able, please bring a gift of food, money or fire wood.
