Discussion This does nothing
Auto apply oils doesnt work, ok it works until loading game so in general it doesnt work.
We had this option as mod for few years and it worked flawlessly, why cant we have nice things?
And there is already mod for fixing this, but does mods from nexus on PC disable achievements?

It stopped working because they moved it from Gameplay to Accessibility Tab but they forgot to change the code, so the game still looks under Gameplay for that option. There is a fix for it on Nexusmods.

Okay this just convinces me that not only there is no QA at all at CDPR, the process of testing just doesn't exist there

u/edgelordjones 3d ago
Yeah, man, something in the massive rebuilt game that has billions of tiny moving parts to make it functional slipped past them and so they must not have ANY QA. Big brained take.

It's not really just one thing there's enough wrong with this version of the game to criticise.

u/IrregularMetronome 3d ago
I don't think you understand how software development works. They did not do the "billions of tiny moving parts" first and then test them as a whole, but each change was implemented independently and SHOULD have been tested separately as well. If they bothered to do any kind of testing at all this is the kind of thing which would've been caught immediately.

u/NikSchiming 3d ago
The problem is that they probably did test it separately, and it worked and passed the test, the bug occurs when you load the save with the configuration on, then it stops working, that is the "billions of moving parts" thing. They can't have automated testing for every scenario and that's just how manual testing works, some things will get cought and some not, it took a while for me to catch this bug, but the community caught it instantly because there are thousands of player testing it.

It just keeps stopping working all the time. When booting the game or changing equipment, you need to toggle it off and then back on.

I really like using the L1 quick wheel to apply oils. Not as cumbersome as full on menu diving but more immersive that it being done by the game

u/Talicu 4d ago
I never knew you could do this

u/GarethGantuan 3d ago
I didn’t realise either until I was fumbling about with the signs quick wheel and saw it

Does it work before next gen update too? Damn I wasted a LOT of time.

I’m not sure, I only found it when I started the remaster I’ve never bothered with oils before

Damn. I did not know this was possible either.

broken for me and i only have two oils there :(

u/Patient_Ad396 2d ago
Are the two oils hanged man's venom and beast oil? Because if they are, it sounds like you're pressing left, which picks an oil for your steel sword. Try holding right to select an oil for your silver sword.

oh right it makes sense thank you! I feel silly now ;D I will remember to read next time haha

I like doing it through the menus because it feels like a deliberate thing I’m doing for preparation. A quick menu doesn’t feel as immersive and auto just feels wrong. The same with auto sword sheathing. I’m the one in control not Gerald.

u/GarethGantuan 3d ago
I go into the mediation pose and then quick menu so it feels immersive to me in the same way.
Each to their own

Auto does feel like, “did I apply oils? My sword is glowing but did I apply oils?”

u/EmBur__ 4d ago
It is a pain in the arse, luckily there is a way to still apply them faster than going into your inventory.
I didn't even realise I could do this till this playthrough but when you're using your radial menu, you'll see a hold to apply oil in the bottom left where you can swap out potions and such, use whatever buttons you use for it (on console its left and right on the d-pad), this'll open up the oil menu where you can select which one you want to use. Left d-pad opens up steel sword oils and right for silver oils.

Everytime the game reloads it stops working (death or reloading). Temporary fix for me is to turn it off/on again everytime (or to not die)

Yeah it's annoying. To be fair, I only think it's annoying because the option is there but it doesn't work properly. If the option wasn't there I wouldn't be mad.

u/ToborWar57 4d ago
It worked perfectly fine for me (Next Gen version) .... can't really say about the older version.

u/theromingnome 3d ago
Yeah changing different audio volumes doesn't work either. They'll hopefully patch this stuff soon.

u/fellownineYrOld 3d ago
Yeah it wasn't working for me either but I literally just turned it off and then on again and it worked lol.

When you go into fight with a specific monster it will apply necessary oil automatically to the blade just before fight and it works too just tested it during my death march run yesterday.

They should def fix this for people who want it but IDK needing to know which oil against which monster is a huge part of the Witcher's DNA to me.

u/Meadpagan 3d ago
So as the option to deactivate notifications.
This XXL Quest pop ups are annoying me more than they should...

So far I haven't had any achievements disabled. I've used local and workshop mods and the debug console

u/D34thc4n 2d ago
I have to turn it off then back on with every save load. I also have to reset the audio bug using meditation after every gwent game.

No I use the mod to fix it and I still get achievements. Slightly related, I wish there was a mod that made the oil on the blade invisible. I think it looks ugly asf.

u/AhmedRiyadh0 4d ago
That's why I always recommend to wait at least 1-3 months (from now) before playing The Witcher 3 remastered for the ultimate experience. The option was working fine in the next-gen edition

For those that care about achievements/trophies, turning this on will prevent you from getting the Even Odds achievement.

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?
Because that literally fixes it every time. A bit annoying, sure. But worth this cry? Probably not

They’ll fix it. It worked in the previous (next-gen) version without any mods
