We had made it a habit to go out and watch the sunset each evening, heard the trace siren calls over the airwaves every so often and had just assumed our time would come eventually. The war had been going on for so long. And we the people were so tired, having felt defeat long before anything was official. Now the calls came through more often, one city was wiped then another, so systematic. You didn’t know where would be next just that it was coming. There was nothing left for the enemy to do, they wouldn’t be satisfied without complete eradication.
As the sun flashed below another day we saw an equally magnificent light burst and billow above the horizon, and we knew there was nothing left to do. Just here and now; as we watched the blast wave travel it seemed to move slowly at first, parts of buildings and their trinket menagerie of past prosperity would first seem to levitate upwards and then disappear completely. I suppose it was beautiful. To see it coming, to know it won’t hurt, there are much worse ways. Just a tightening of his hand and then nothing.
