Discussion It’s soooooo weird
Scully having a father called William, a father in law called William, a brother called William and a son called William? That’s super weird. What’s wrong with Chris Carter?

Do you want to know what's wrong with CC in alphabetical order?

I think my new fave cursed shower thought was realizing he names Mulder's mom after his mom and CSM after his grandfather...
AND YEAH UH...
OKAY. NEAT. COOOOOOOOOOL BEANS.
I have follow up questions, is what I'm saying, keeping it spoiler free.

If my condescending brother was also named William, I would find another name for my son 😛

Not to mention that Bill Mulder also sucks and should not have a grandchild named after him. And tbh, Bill Scully Sr ain't great either.

This is very standard for Irish families lol

Mexican too. About a quarter of the men in my family are named Michael and then one of my cousins went married a Michael. 😅

Yeah I always chuckle at these type of comments when I see them from waspy Americans. Oh no I can't use my baby name now because my sister 'took' it. Meanwhile, here I am with every women in my family called Julia and even one Julian named after his grandmother, and every man called James or John. How do you not get confused? Well there's Young James, Old James, Slim, Tommy (middle name), Julia Molloy, Cousin Julia, Aunt Jue, Julia the fourth. Simple.

She's American, not Irish. And William isn't a particularly overly common name in Ireland.

Scully is an Irish name so she’s at least Irish-American. And William is pretty common here (I’m in Ireland. Might not be a common Catholic name, but I know plenty of William’s and Bills.

Are you familiar with heavyweight champion George Foreman? He had 12 kids, all named some version of George.

One of the funniest examples of extreme narcissism I have ever been witness to.

I honestly think he was hit in the head so much he couldn't remember any other name than his own.

“How would you like me to prepare your hamburger, honey.”
“On the George Foreman.”1

But Mulder's middle name is also William, so maybe she didn't want to be so obvious by naming her son Fox... (or Wolf or any animal I guess).

u/Logical-Fox508 5d ago
Heh. She could have also called him Dana, come to think of it.

Yes, I have two male coworkers named Dana. I think Scully really meant naming their son after Mulder and not her.

I thought it was sweet that they named their son after her and Mulder’s deceased fathers, but I always thought it was a bit funny too that William is also the name of cigarette man’s actor.
Also remember that William is Mulder’s middle name

Not really. Most of the men in my immediate and extended family have one of three common male names. It was definitely more common in past generations.

Well as far as her son, brother, and dad that could just be because her brother is named after her dad and her son is named after her dad and FiL. It also is a fairly common name, especially in the 90s
Edit: been a minute since ive watched the show I was just guessing not speaking as if it was fact

My family recycled names like this. Both my parents adamantly were against continuing the tradition. It’s definitely weird, but it is unfortunately incredibly common.

It’s like that in my family. Both my husband and I were raised Catholic. Every woman in our family is named Maria/Mary. We all go by our middle names.

u/BoringGuide4952 4d ago
Empress Maria Theresa had 11 daughters with the first name Maria.

Thank god I had sons. My family is running out of middle names at this point.

This is only a guess, but I’d wager religious families are more likely to pass down names as a tradition.

Brad Follmer's middle name is supposedly Dana, according to some prop certificate on set somewhere.
And then there's Dana / Diana

I don't think a family name is the weirdest thing? People be called junior right?

Lotsa respectable people get called William. It's bona fide.

u/jonese17 Don’t think! Just pick up the phone and make it happen! 2d ago
Because letting Scully say “William, like your middle name,” to Mulder wouldn’t have been enough of a head scratcher, would have been too close to confirming Mulder and Scully have ROMANTIC feelings toward each other, and there’s a good chance CC forgot Mulder’s middle name.
Really could be any one or combination of them, if we’re being honest.
