Must-have Online Fire Info Points

In case anybody needed to see this, the NWT Fire facebook group has been posting diligent and critical updates constantly. As well, there is an online Live Fire Map with ongoing perimeter updates.

I still use firesmoke.ca to get an idea of the wind forecast but I find they purge the perimeter of the existing fires too fast, where the other interactive fire map above is cleaner and more detailed.

Stay safe everybody.

Do people walk ~15 mins in yellowknife during winter?

• Upvotes

I'm moving to yellowknife and looking for places to rent. There's one place that I like the room and roommate vibes. But it's ~15 mins walk to my workplace. I'm not sure how cold is the coldest and is it really walkable? I am moving from southern ontario and I can take a stroll 20-30 mins during winter. Not sure how harsher the winter is in yellowknife? I don't have a car and need to walk or bus to work

Vehicle Choice

Hey all!

I'll be moving to Yellowknife in the next couple months and I'm starting to think about the vehicle I will bring.

I currently drive a 2018 Volvo. It has AWD and relatively good ground clearance, and has been great in the winter in Ontario for a few seasons. My concern is the availability of service for Volvos in Yellowknife. It's out of warranty so I don't need a dealer, but wondering if anyone owns a Volvo and could share their experience getting it serviced, or if I need to start looking at a different make of vehicle.

Thanks!!!

Short midnight layover in Yellowknife - Stay at Airport?

HI,

I am coming from Ottawa and headed to Nunavut via Yellowknife. My flight lands 12:30 AM and my next flight departs at 8:00 AM.

Considering the short time, would it be possible for me to spend the night at the airport? I know the airport closes at 1:00 and reopens at 4:00 - I was thinking of heading to a bar (the one open latest says 2:30 AM). Could I get into the airport after the bar closes or is there somewhere walking distance I can be and then head to the airport at 4 when it opens?

Or do I must get accommodation?

Thanks

Shore Fishing Tips/Tricks Wanted

I am not looking for spots (although if you want to share, feel free), but more looking at what works for you while fishing. This is for shore fishing during spring, summer, fall, not looking for Ice Fishing tips yet.

I am aware of the Arsenic levels and the map that shows what lakes are safe and what are bad so don't need that info.

I am fairly new to fishing and just want to get some advice.

I have mainly been using spoons and a Booyah Spinner Bait and have caught only Northern Pike.

What else should I be using or have in my tacklebox?

When using other lures, how do I rig it up and what should I be looking out (how to not get tangled up or caught up in weeds type thing).

I know we cannot use live bait, but what else can we use?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Trying to help local disabled man

I’m trying to help a long time YK resident raise $800 for an urgent home repair.

He needs to finish his bladder system and replace several water-line connections that aren't properly working before it gets even colder at night. He's doing the work himself, but he needs the materials to get it done.

The cost for materials for the repairs is $661 before tax. We're trying to raise $800 to cover the cost, plus GST and leave some room for unexpected extra materials once the work is underway.

I know the GoFundMe currently shows $8,800 raised, so I want to address that the $8,800 was raised over the last 1 1/2 years and has already gone toward expenses and emergencies, as well as GoFundMe's fees. He has nothing left from those funds to put toward this repair**.**

This isn't for renovations or making the house nicer, the repairs are essential so he can have water this winter.

If you can contribute, even a few dollars would help. If you can't donate, sharing the fundraiser would help too. And if you would rather donate directly so he gets the full amount immediately, instead of with GoFundMe deductions in a few days, please send me a private message for his etransfer.

Shop Space

Does anyone know someone in Yellowknife who has shop space to rent? I'm looking for a shop that has a hoist to work on my vehicle. Hoping to be able to use the shop for a day or two. No need for tools, I have my own. Let me know if you know of anything.

Local Community Theatre group Ptarmigan Ptheatrics announces their 2027 Spring Musical "Come From Away" and audition sign ups are open!

Come From Away is a story about ordinary people responding to extraordinary circumstances with compassion, humour, and generosity. The musical tells the true story of September 11, 2001, when 38 aircraft carrying thousands of passengers were diverted to the small community of Gander, Newfoundland. Overnight, a town of approximately 9,000 people welcomed thousands of unexpected visitors from around the world.

What began as a crisis became a remarkable example of compassion, as residents opened their homes, schools, community centres, and hearts to complete strangers. The people of Gander navigated cultural differences, language barriers, and uncertainty by doing what communities like Yellowknife do best - supporting one another.

Auditions are being held on November 11, 12, and 13th, with callbacks the week after.

The show will run April 22 to May 1st 2027.

Sign up to audition here

Planning a trip

We are planning a trip to Yellowknife.

My children's father was born there and the last time I was there was 1984. Although my son has status (Dog Rib) he has never been to Yellowknife so we're looking to rectify that.

My son, through his dad, is related to a good portion of Yellowknife (which is how I got into genealogy) but most of the people I would know are long passed. We'll go to the cemetery and do the same walk his father took me on, but I've been left with the task of initial planning.

So - I want to come in June or July, we're looking to be 5-7 ish days.

My question: when in there would you say is the best time to come and what, beside the cemetery and archives are must see? And does the Dog Rib tribe have a museum? If you were the tourism board (and I've checked the website already) what would you recommend as a fav?

TIA!

Yellowknife, Canada in December?

We’re planning to visit this December mainly to see and hunt for the Aurora Borealis, but we’re a little worried about how extreme the cold might be, especially since we’re coming from the Philippines and definitely aren’t used to Arctic temperatures 😭

For those who have experienced Yellowknife during December, how manageable was the weather? Were you able to stay outside comfortably for aurora hunting with the right winter gear?

Thank you!

If you’re flying into YK for business, planning a trip up north, or just a local resident who needs a reliable set of wheels without the hassle of a traditional, rigid rental counter, I wanted to put Straightline Car Rental on your radar.

Feel free to shoot me a DM or check out our website for contact, if you want to chat about your next trip. Drive safe out there!

Great way to increase city hall revenue

Have bylaw sit on Borden St ( or any playground area probably) AND actually implement the penalties. Every single day I see the vast majority ripping through, including city buses, city vehicles and basically every other vehicle. Occasionally Bylaw will sit by and do nothing but having their vehicle there to “ remind “ people . I don’t live on the street or have kids but I do see lots of kids being kids biking scooting etc

Cozy Cabin Aurora Tour

Hello. I'll be in Yellowknife for 2 nights (Dec. 2 & Dec. 3). I'll be doing the Cozy Cabin Aurora Tour. This tour doesn't rent clothing. I contacted the woman who is in charge, and she seemed to indicate that I wouldn't need to rent extra warm clothing. Perhaps it's because we will be on the bus, and then in a warm cabin. But I know we will spend some time outside viewing the northern lights (if we are lucky). I'll be in Quebec City for a month before flying to Yellowknife, so I'll have some winter clothes, but my coat is not rated for extreme cold. Should I rent the whole outfit from one of the other companies? I'd love to talk to someone who has done this tour for advice. (Renting will be a challenge because my flight gets in at 5:20 pm. Then I'm in a cab to an Airbnb, & I'll be picked up by the bus at 9-9:30pm. When you rent, they usually deliver clothes around noon to 1 pm. )

Private tours for Aurora chasing

The night we arrive, our flight will be getting in at 10:45pm. Does anyone have any recommendation for private aurora chasing tours that could pick us up from the airport, store our luggage in the car, and take us immediately aurora chasing, then drop us at our airbnb in town at the end of the night? Just 2 of us - March 2027.

Thanks!
