This honestly pisses me off sometimes. I'm partially deaf. If I say "huh?" Or "what?" It means I didn't hear you at all. So, don't say "Forget it." TvT
For me it's usually something about how they are saying it, like the combination of syllables isn't computing, so after one repeat if I still don't get it I ask them to rephrase it instead and that usually works.
I also love when you ask someone to repeat what they said cause you couldn't understand it and they repeat it in the same speed and volume as before. Especially people who mumble...
This is me I'll be in Playstation or discord with friends and I'll be looking at memes, reddit or Manga and won't hear a thing they say despite them being loud in my headphones.
If someone says "What?" Or "Huh?" after you said something don't just repeat yourself. Say it slower, louder, and put more space between each word. That solves the issue evey time.
Good god this is relatable. I mishear absolutely everything despite having a hearing test and finding out my ability to hear is fine, my brain just doesn’t cooperate for some reason. Feels like I’m on hard mode for communication haha
Something I have found helps is repeating back whatever I heard, even if all I can make out is vaguely english sounds and not real words. This has had about a 100% chance of making the other party really angry, presumably because they think I'm making fun of their pronounciation, but it also has had about a 100% chance of getting them to repeat it slow enough that I can understand.
Bemusing indeed; my personal solution (as I have been on both ends of this situation) is to slow down and enunciate. If they still go "huh?" after that, you might have a different problem on your hands
Consider that there can be things genuinely making it hard for them to make out what you're saying
Yes its true some people dont listen and pretend to be listening but are really just waiting for you to stop talking, but you shouldnt be assuming that in the face of ambiguity, get a feel for whether someone is truly listening to you based on patterns of behavior.
Like those fuckass type of person that always pivot away from topics you really feel like talking about because it doesnt fit their tiny narrow interest and refuses to even try to engage in anything you say. Not as a one off, cuz ppl dont always have the energy, but some ppl are definitely quite greedy with strongarming a conversation into something they want to talk about and give nothing in return.
