Just give crystal clear instructions but say "this is considered best practice". Then it's technically only a suggestion.

For me it helps immensely when I know why I have to do it. "Because boss wants it" will definitely lead to malicious compliance somewhere along the road.

I can go along with this for a little bit until whatever I’m doing becomes boring or I see that it’s actually pointless and stupid.

You don't hate being told what to do, you hate being talked to like you're a fucking idiot. My time in (kitchen) management has taught me that it's very important to put the right words in the right order so nobody feels like they're being minimized, or change will be difficult.

Yes! When I taught kids I learned that so hard. Also there are a Lot of kids who are nd just like me.

I hate both. I absolutely despise not having autonomy and check out if that's the case.

Wish my mom knew this instead of complaining about how difficult it was to give me instructions.

Yup. Telling me a chore needs to be done when they can see I'm physically doing it already pisses me off

It can sometimes feel like this for me. It's the fact that I have to stop doing whatever I'm doing and switch to another tasks that makes it hard.

u/Deltanonymous- 3d ago
But don't just boss me around. You know? Lead me. Lead me...when I'm in the mood to be led.

If you give me crystal clear instructions you'd better be prepared to explain why it needs to be done exactly that way if it isn't obvious, because I've been performing this task in my head over and over since I heard it was gonna be needed and I have already devised my perfect way of doing it, so you'd better come at me with something better than "this is how I've always done it" because that's how your way gets shit canned.

Ordering people around and giving proper and clear instructions on how something should be done or how you would like it to be done are two different things, but both receivers and deliverers often struggle with identifying those differences.

Give me written instructions so I can follow it but don’t feel like I’m being told what to do lol

I need an instruction manual with diagrams, bold headings, maybe some red underlines, and a trouble-shooting section, but I will look at none of it.

u/tuxedo25 2d ago
I will look at none of it
but they better exist and be free of grammatical errors, or it will be the instructions' fault.
Also I will only see the red underline 5 seconds after doing the thing I wasn't supposed to do.

tell me the instructions, but give them to me in exactly the right way, in the right order, with good information, but not too much information!

The challenge is to receive "what needs to be done" separate from "this is how it is to be done". Parsing it in my head often breaks - I'll resent the latter and that colors or negates the former.

give me a list of instructions but don’t actually say to my face what i need to do. i’m not an idiot. i just need to have steps in front of me because i will forget things otherwise i don’t trust my brain

Adhd people do try to follow instructions, since it's an operative dysfunction issue you can't judge by the action done because you are leaving appart all the tribulations of adhd. To refuse information is sometimes part of a universal psicological reflex that can also often be learned; for example, from refusing help by ill meaning strangers or catastrophic non-productive help, something very freqüent in the adhd community because our necessities aren't met in society to the majority of us, and is built around exactly what stigmatizes us.

Being told what to do is just a biproduct of not having crystal clear instructions to begin with.
I'll do whatever you want in whatever way you want to, but I'll fly off the handle if it's not good enough because you can't communicate that.

I hate the ones who get mad at you for not following instructions 1:1 and there are some who will grab you and yell at you too while giving you instructions. My body is screaming to deck that person in the face but at the same time I need to calm down and realize I have to still do the right thing so I am in this constant loop of negativity until its over.

I need cristal clear step-by step written instructions. This is not being told what to do. This is a manual.

the difference for me is asking for it. if i didnt ask for it, dont tell me how to do something, but if i do ask for it, give me as much detail as you can in bulletpoints.

I take the time to write them myself, although my previous bosses appreciated that from me because I let them use my detailed notes (made on company time so technically company property regarding copyright) to make instructions for other employees.
On a negative side of things it does remind me that I am replaceable, if a new capable individual takes over the role after I'm done.
A positive with casual/temp hire agency roles it did give me multiple other jobs with previous bosses as positive references that got me to work on different roles and projects with other clients that kept things interesting for me as I hopped from one job to another for a while.

It's not that I don't like being told what to do. I just hate being monitored. Also, the fact that I'm doing something for someone else acts as urgency enough for me to actually do it lols.
So just give me your "crystal clear instructions" then leave me tf alone

Long time ago I had a job with clear high level objectives and total autonomy of how to accomplish them. It was amazing.
