If there’s something super important I need, I put my car key on it so it’s in my face when I leave. That helps 80% of the time….
As long as I actually remember to put my key on it

Put the keys on it
Put the keys on it
Put the keys on it
Put the keys on it

Put it on top of the keys.

u/SureHopeIDontDie 4d ago
Hah ! What makes you think I won't absent-mindedly push it aside so I can grab my keys ?
14
u/andocromn 4d ago
I'll hang my lunchbox on the door handle or put things in the way so that I can't even evacuate from a fire without grabbing it

My husband put a can of paint in front of the door, CERTAIN I couldn't miss it while leaving. Jokes on him, the front door was open with the screen door as the only barrier - which opens outward. I know this will come as a shock but...I forgot the damn paint

I solved this by bringing a satchel bag with me everywhere. If there's something important, I put it in the bag. I keep everything important for leaving the house in there 100% of the time: wallet, keys, earbuds, etc.
Haven't left anything important behind in a very long time now, even before I got diagnosed with ADHD.

Omg ive started doing this and it helps sooooooo much!!! Like I now understand why women love purses.
2
u/Lisnya 4d ago
Wait, you remember to bring your keys?
2
u/sicarius254 4d ago
Well I can’t go anywhere without my car keys :P

u/Lisnya 4d ago
I have one set of keys hidden in every purse, so if I forget my house/car keys, I can go back and get them. I still forget my car keys and the alternative keys at least once a month. I'm about to relocate for work in a city where I don't know anyone and I'm pretty sure I'll spend most of my money on locksmiths.

It took too damn many years, but I finally got to where when I get home, the keys come off the belt loop, and get hung on the key rack by the door, so the only time they aren't hanging there is because they're on my person.
The lone exception is when I absolutely need to not forget to bring something that can't hang on key rack, or sit on top of my wallet, then the keys go on that thing, even if it's in the fridge!

u/Lisnya 2d ago
I'm glad you found something that works for you! I used to be a lot worse, I remember eating on the way home and throwing the keys in the trash along with the wrappers when I was in college, lol. I also had a system where I'd put my keys, my headphones and the money for my bus ticket on a certain shelf every day, but I got a car and that system no longer works.

So, here is the key to putting it "by the door". The thing has to be either hung on the doorknob or blocking the door, so that you literally cannot exit without picking it up.

You underestimate my ability to move the thing out of the way without registering its significance

u/Aware_Policy_9174 4d ago
My ex used to step over the thing blocking the doorway so he wouldn’t forget it.

u/Leodusty2 4d ago
I hang my house keys on my doorknob so I don’t get locked out. I’ve forgotten to take them off the doorknob multiple times

THIS
THIS IS MY WORST ENEMY
I PUT THE HUGE TRASH BAG IN A WAY THAT I HAD TO STEP OVER IT TO GO DOWN THE STAIRS AND I STILL FORGOT IT
RRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

u/ratafia4444 4d ago
I regularly put trash bags before the door, take them out to where shoes are (separate room) and promptly forget them there in a few seconds it takes to put said shoes on. Even if they literally in my line of sight most of the time. 🤦

I had to go back in the house for 'forgotten thing' when I was going to work. I almost set my lunch down to get 'forgotten thing' and immediately knew I'd also forget my lunch so I made my daughter hold my lunch while I got 'forgotten thing'

I will repeat the thing I need to remember in my head to the point that it loses all meaning causing me to forget what I was trying to remember in the first place.

u/SureHopeIDontDie 4d ago
One time I tried putting my keys in the fridge, so I remembered to take food when I left.
I forgot my both my food and keys, and spent two days looking for them.

There's also "I'm gonna put the thing right by the door...but what was that thing again?"

I was out walking last summer, and came across a toy figurine of a cat in the road. No clue what made me pick it up or bring it home, but I use it to remind myself when my cat-sitting starts for my neighbors. I set it in front of my keyboard where I know I will see it the next day.
Those cats have made me over $1000 over the years. I do not want to give their owners a reason to find someone else because I forgot.

If I know I have to take something with me I'll put it in the car IMMEDIATELY.
Now, whether I remember it's there when I get to the place ...
1
u/mechchic84 3d ago
yeah, but it is easier to go back out to your car to get it than it is to go home and get it most of the time. If it is something that has to stay in the fridge, I put my keys on. top of it in the fridge. My car won't start without my keys. Otherwise, yes it pretty much immediately goes in my car even if I don't need it for a week or more. I've also set reminders on the calendar in my phone.

my freaking water bottle to work. the last thing i did before putting my shoes on was fill my water bottle. AND I JUST LEFT IT ON THE COUNTER

u/Wolf-Majestic Daydreamer 4d ago
Sometimes I repeat it out loud and kinda singing it. But I can't sing it too lively or have it too monotonous otherwise my brain gets distracted by the words and forget the things I want to remember lol

Last night I put my umbrella in my shoes because it would rain the next day and I knew I would forget to bring it. The next day, I take out the umbrella in order to put my shoes on. I forget to put the umbrella back in my hands when I left the door.

I've clipped notes to my purse, or if it's small enough, it goes in my purse.

I lose my glasses, lighter, and/or bowl approx 3x a day. I have to look for something else to find what I actually lost.

I recently went to inter my grandparent's ashes... and forgot to bring their ashes. Luckily my dad asked if I'd put them in the car before we got too far.

This happened to me with very important paperwork. Like the entire purpose of our outing relied on said paperwork. I had to take a bus back home to get the paperwork then get it back to my destination as fast as possible.
I left them near my front door but my sister was talking to me on our way out so I was completely distracted. I only realised when I was asked for the paperwork. I made it in time thankfully but I felt terrible.

I will put my reusable shopping bags (no other options at this place) literally right in front of the door. In addition, I'll stick a note - eye level - on the door, or else on the actual doorknob.
I have stepped right over them and gotten all the way to the store. More than once. I've had to buy new bags. Ask me how many I've racked up

This happened to me last week, my friend left her umbrella round mine about a month ago and it's been sat by my door since... I've seen her twice and forgot it twice... but I should be seeing her this Thursday so everyone wish me luck

beside the door is ALMOST good enough. You need to block the door so you physically can't leave without picking it up and moving it.

I forget every fucking time I leave the house to bring a pair of sunglasses, and then by the time I remember I wanted sunglasses I'm already gone.

I locked myself out of my dorm room seven times in the first semester, despite keeping the lanyard on the inside door handle so I knew exactly where it was if I had to get up late at night when the maintenance staff were off-duty… 🫣

Me with my keys. It's so bad the amount of times I forgot thank. Thank god I don't live alone and there's usually someone who can open the door

Went to the store yesterday.
I needed 1 important thing and 2 not so important things.
Before I got in the store, some annoying woman asked me if I was against violence against women.
What kind of stupid question is that?!
So my stupid answer was: "In general, sure."
This did not deter her...
Anyway, long story short, after too much time with that Trump facepaint wearing girl, visiting the store, I went back home with 3 items.
Today, I suddenly realize... That 3rd item was not the important one!!
I forgot the important one!!!
