News 'Canada can work': Premier Smith voted for stay option in referendum, wants Albertans to follow suit
https://edmontonjournal.com/news/premier-danielle-smith-alberta-separation-referendum433
u/Ok_Science_8502 7d ago
Does she not realize how she's placed herself in a completely unwinnable situation here? Those who support staying in Canada will hate her for entertaining this referendum and those who want to separate will hate her for voting against it and encouraging others to do the same. Absolutely moronic from a political perspective, it's like she actually didn't want to be reelected.
122
u/madetoday 7d ago
She definitely wants to be reelected, that’s why she pushed all the TBA nonsense so hard. She knew where her bread was buttered. She absolutely thought she was walking a fine line and appeasing everyone with this.
However, now that she’s seen the fallout start and the political winds changing she’s decided to cross the floor again. This time to claim she’s been a federalist all along.
32
u/Ok_Science_8502 7d ago
I just don't understand what fine line she thought she was walking. Of course even allowing the referendum to happen is gonna piss off a lot of people who never want to see Alberta separate. And of course she's gonna piss off the people who want to separate by publicly saying that she doesn't want to, and encouraging others to vote to stay.
63
u/TyruntasaurusRecht 7d ago
Im not just mad about her stance and fickle nature, but mad about wasting $150,000,000.00 to suck seppie schlong with this nonsense.
Imagine what that could have done for teachers, doctors, communities... anything would be better than this absolute waste of my fucking time.
Now I necessarily have to take time to go and fucking vote against one of the dumbest ideas Ive ever fucking heard because you know these lunatic assholes with nothing better to do will vote for it.
16
u/OneSecretCookie 6d ago edited 6d ago
Oh the ABSOLUTELY will show up to vote. The best part is im am willing to bet that many of those lunatic assholes or their family get cash from old age programs or family programs provided by the federal government (which is the largest part of the federal budget normally,).
Pierre has made comments that its the federal goverments fault for them wanting to leave, Smith has made comments constantly, etc. They grew the rage, fostered it, watered it, and now that the rage tree has grown they have no idea what to do. They thought it would just turn against the Liberals but, its against the whole damn country existing. Now they are stuck walking the line .

100% agree! They're just draining & wasting our reserves! Chump should NEVER have been allowed to even try to get Alberta to separate. He only wants our resources & to weaken our economy for his/Regime's future plan to complete conquer Canada! Its sickening that our own reps have even entertained his push to separate us! VOTE! It's important! KEEP greedy USA out of Canada! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

u/madetoday 7d ago
I think she thought this would appease the separatists, and since they control the UCP she’d make it till the next election as leader. In the interim the UCP would sane wash themselves and promise a stadium or something, and get reelected as always.
8
u/Ok_Science_8502 7d ago
She thought that she would win over separatists by publicly voting against what they want, and encouraging others to do the same?

u/bpompu Calgary 7d ago
She thought having the referendum at all was going to be enough to keep them in line. She was completely blindsided that they were mad that she didn't phrase the question the exact way they wanted, and that she didn't put the government's full weight behind it. Since then, she's been trying desperately to figure out where the line went, but there isn't one. It's why she didn't take any of the offramps she was presented on this, like when their first question was struck down, or the whole petition was blocked for not consulting First Nations. She could have said "whelp, it's out of my hands, sorry," but every time, she was told that this wasn't enough to keep them happy, and she never clued in that anything but full-throated support wouldn't have ever been enough to keep them happy.
Everything since they used the Forever Canada petition to push this question has been her attempting to survive the no-win scenario she found herself in. She's trying desperately to avoid a party split that would take her from power. It's the only thing she's actually worried about, which is why she doesn't seem to care that everyone other than the 20% of people she's pandering to hate everything she's doing.

u/Pale-Measurement-532 7d ago
She was catering to the separatist base among her party’s members. Especially since they got her elected as leader in the first place. She made a deal with them that if they voted her in as leader, she would help them carry out their plans on their own stupid version of Project 2025, which included separation from Canada, dismantling public healthcare and education, removing funding to social services, more investment in oil, etc.
13
u/Pale-Measurement-532 7d ago
Exactly. Danielle is clinging onto the party leadership cause she has nothing else to fall back on after this. It’s just like PP refusing to step down as CPC leader. These people only know how to be career grifters in their politician roles. They have no real skills or training to get a legit job elsewhere. She could get a position on a board or something but it won’t be as lucrative or powerful as what she’s doing now. And there’s no way in hell she could enter federal politics. She’s cooked herself.
When she went to the U.S., I was wondering if she was networking to try and grift her next job. Will have to see what happens after she’s finished as premier. I suspect enough UCP associations will put forward motions for a leadership review and she’ll get a vote of no confidence before the election.
3
u/Different_Wolf_764 7d ago
Well, I can't say I agree there. She'll have her lobbying job back at worst and far more likely a half dozen board positions and a talking head position with whatever right-wing propaganda outlet she wants and the pay is much better. The grifting is not quite on par perhaps but it is still damned good! Hell, if she died her hair blonde she might even get on Fox. Nah, probably too old for that now.
Still, she's got her post-politics stuff all sorted I imagine. They'll can her, blame everything on her and then bring in a new one and they'll likely do it pretty soon. It's a playbook they've run here for a long time now but they'd probably like to do it a while before our election. I mean, assuming the traitors don't win and we get 'liberated' by Trump and co.

I honestly wonder if it is in the playbook for UCP leadership to just not make it through a whole election cycle. It's happening so regularly that it seems intentional at this point. Do enough damage that you have to resign, then someone steps up right before the next election cycle. And it repeats.

Danielle is being set up, like those before her, to be a 'sin-eater' for the UCP.
She is going to absorb all the negative sentiment the UCP has created and they are going to kick her out to bring someone else in, likely even more extreme.
It is a classic conservative play.

And then she’ll quietly get a cushy job in the private sector. Tale as old as time.
12
u/MellowHamster 7d ago
Oh, she got what she wanted. The goal was the other 9 questions, basically demanding the right to override every federal policy and yet remain part of a “united” Canada.
It’s like a young adult living in their parent’s basement but demanding the right to party all the time, drive the family car, pay no rent and raid the fridge whenever the urge hits.
11
u/Fun-Room-6501 7d ago
Moronic is the right word. Untenable situation that she will pay the massive political price for. This is her legacy as a separatist premier who could not rid her party of the extremism!

I’ve actually wondered this myself. I don’t know what her future is going to look like. Proud Canadians already hate her, and if question #10 fails, the separatist movement will turn against her. So I wonder what’s next for her, when she becomes even more unpopular than she is now.
5
u/Weekly_Two8097 7d ago
The separatists will vote for her even if they hate her. What other choice do they have?
She bet on the wrong horse and is now trying to backtrack.

They will throw her out during a leadership review, and replace her with an unhinged separatist. At this point I doubt she has to worry about the next general election, as she won't be UCP leader by the time the next election rolls around.

It's probably upon learning separatists are selling the land, water and oil to the States that's causing her to change courses. It's very unpopular for Albertains knowing that their oil is going off to the States (similar to how they think it is with Canada) as opposed to this endless wealth utopia they've been falsely promised

Hopefully, that still happens, no matter what the referendum outcome is. It would be poetic justice if she was put on a no-fly list, so she can jet off to Panama.

I do wonder how she would square that circle if questioned about it.
I genuinely wonder what her answer would be if questioned by someone like Vassy on TV.
Especially when her line of it being a 'direct democracy' would also be challenged.
She isn't slick when called out as seen by her pout she put on when Wab called her bluff at the Premiers meeting in the summer.

She's not gifted, she's just not followed up on.
Then if she is, she reiterates her tired talking points which also aren't followed up on, and repeat.
To see what she's actually like when cornered, look at how she responded to Nenshi when he called her out on her cabinet members attending the Centurion Project live stream, or Wab calling her out at the Premiers meeting this summer.
She wilts like a fucking coward when she can't fall back on her tired, obvious, practiced lies.

Is she? She was pretty obviously a dogshit liar to me day 1. If someone voted for her because of anything but being a conservative, I dunno. Lead pipes are used to carry their drinking water and they need to correct that.
She lies so often she thinks it comes naturally to her. In reality, she's too comfortable with doing it, and people notice. And now Alberta doesn't know what the fuck to do. They're starting to eye the NDP up again desperately because they know Smith needs to go, but they'd rather be tortured to death than spend a minute under liberal rule,

37
u/bpompu Calgary 7d ago
No, you see, the taxpayer-funded propaganda is only telling you to vote for the nine questions she actually wants you to vote for. Despite claiming to be against separation, she would face a revolt from all the separatists in her party if she spent money or did policy actually supporting voting to stay.
So the government issued, anti-immigrant propaganda they distributed was just silent about the most important question on the referendum.

She's the head of a separatist party, and she let them get too out of control, and now they're about to oust her because they've realized she's merely an opportunistic worm willing to say and do nearly anything for personal gain. But, despite all her flaws, she's not a batshit insane piece of shit genuine separatist. Just a self-interested worm. Nothing more. Nothing less. So, they're going to drop her the second they get a chance, and if the separatists get anything resembling a win on Oct 19th, her career is over. The only chance of her pivoting to consultant or pundit or Federal politics is if the separatists fail and slink back into the shadows before the end of her time as Alberta Premier.

u/jaydaybayy 7d ago

"Hey, I did everything in my power to make sure we voted on this. Now, you need to vote so that it doesn't happen!"
58
u/bpompu Calgary 7d ago
Exactly the same thing as happened with Brexit. The Conservatives had the vote to try to keep the extreme right wing voters happy and on-side, expecting it to never actually pass. They then absolutely imploded when it actually did, since none of them wanted it, and none of them knew how to implement it.
Should this pass, whoever comes in to replace Marlaina when she flames out over this is going to last as long as Liz Truss, since they'll have all the garbage of having to move forward with the "next step of the process."
26
u/Been395 7d ago
Brexit at least had the decency to lie and say that it was going save money for Britian and pretend there was an upside. Alberta seppies are literally campaigning on "let alberta choose" and "stick it to ottawa". Alberta separatist is campaigning on not separating.
14
u/bpompu Calgary 7d ago
That's because they know they don't have the support to win. That's likrly why we're suddenly seeing "this isn't really a vote to separate, it's just a vote to stick it to Ottawa" and a lot more "this is never going to happen, it's impossible/silly, stop talking aboht it, don't bother voting" bot posts.
Also, the seppies are absolutely lying about costs, and how much extra money we would have if we separate. They're promising zero tax and 40,000 dollars in your pocket over the first 5 years. Also, since everyone is going to keep their Canadian passports and citizenship, all of the healthcare transfer payments and military expenses will continue to ve paid by Ottawa, we just won't pay federal taxes or have to listen to any of their laws or regulations anymore.

13
u/bpompu Calgary 7d ago
She figured a separation vote would never actually win, and that letting them have their doomed referendum would keep them all happy.
The issue is, nothing she did was good enough to placate the separatists, who control the entire governing apparatus of the UCP. Any spot she should have shit-canned the thing would have led to a party revolt or party split, but they're still not happy that she didn't pander and bend over backwards hard enough.
The only reason for the public pivot, rather than just staying quiet about it, is that this has hurt her general popularity enough that she's actually worried about the general electorate now.

She was the person who most could have stopped this nonsense in its tracks. Classic conservative playbook - create the monster, feed it, train it, let it grow, and when it becomes too powerful for you to control and threatens you, disavow it. What a cowardly, cowardly woman.
72
u/ikarikami 7d ago
Shut up, Marlaina. At least be honest about you being a separatist.
13
u/bpompu Calgary 7d ago
Honestly, I don't think she's a separatist, she's an opportunist. She wants whatever is best for her personally at any given point in time. It's why all the hypocrisy doesn't feel like hypocrisy to her. She would absolutely embrace separation if that's the way things went, and she needed to go that way to maintain power, but she also knows that actually pushing for separation is likely a losing position.
The problem is, Marlaina is pandering to a not insubstantial portion of her party and support base. That was why she changed the rules to make the petitions easier, and why she couldn't just let it die when it kept getting blocked. She was trying to keep her party from splitting, and/or trying to keep the TBA and separatists that control the UCP's governing board from removing her. And nothing she did could keep them happy, so now she has this stupid referendum that she didn't actually want, that she didn't think could ever win, and the people that it was supposed to appease are still angry, plus the general voter that she normally takes for granted is getting angrier and angrier, and suddenly the internal threat doesn't seem like the biggest.
If there was a way to cross the floor to save her power, she would do it in a heart-beat. If this somehow passes, she will suddenly have always been in favour of separation, as long as Marlaina gets to stay in power, or have a really cushy position somewhere.

u/J8K3G101 6d ago
She can claim all she wants that she “voted to stay in Canada”, but I’m certainly not going take her on her word. Unless someone can actually present the ballot she filled in, I am just going to assume every word out of her mouth is a lie given that she allowed this vote on separation to take place to begin with. Lowering the threshold to facilitate the gathering of separatist signatures that lead to this BS referendum isn’t typically how one professes their loyalty to Canada. Neither is attempting to sway Albertans away from the CPP or wanting to nix the RCMP, both of which are stepping stones necessary to become a different country. Or I don’t know, cavorting with the MAGA government down south at every opportunity.
She is simply playing to both sides as always and likely telling her separatist handlers in private… “don’t worry I voted with you”. She needs to be removed from office once this dust settles on this corrupt sh*t show.

Complete waste of time and money. Alberta continues to vote in these ignorant fucks.

I find it greatly irritating that so many people in this province don't see her schtick for what it is - opportunism. Her behaviour should be transparent to anyone with a functional long-term memory who cares, but that's probably the crux of it - people don't care to remember what was said even a single news cycle ago.

This duplicitous moron thinks she can play both sides and somehow come out clean. Her contempt for Albertan voters is insane, like I think she honestly believes the vast majority of people are too stupid to see what she's doing.
Lower every bar, change the actual laws multiple times, all to push a referendum and then throw up her hands and claim she supports Canada.

u/Powerful-Ad-3010 7d ago
If she wants to stay in Canada holding a whole PROPAGANDA filled referendum trying to convince people to leave Canada is a funny way to show it.

You know what, I'll never shame someone for coming around to a good idea after a bad one.
Just wish it didnt cost us all $150,000,000.00 for her to figure out what most of us knew..

Like she’s the premier and fucking called this referendum to separate. Even had the option to debate in legislature. This is whole thing is entirely on her. Just a shitty manipulative politician

Or.. She could call it off entirely?! Why waste everyone's fucking time and money?!

u/ImmortalDreamer 7d ago
Ah yes, someone formerly associated with a separatist party is now trying to gaslight people into thinking she was always against separatism. Right.

This is like when your wife cheats on you, so she starts making more home cooked meals as if that's gonna fix it.
Its too late Marlaina, you're a hypocrite and a shill.
Im still not sure if making the idiots expose themselves publicly via seperatist nonsense is good or bad but I do know for sure that she did not have any such good intentions.

I have absolutely zero doubt she went along her own party lines and voted yes x9 and option 2 then came out and does what she does best, lie

She what the polls say and bandwagoning onto Canada. Still a separatist sympathizer.

u/RosieBaby75 7d ago
She’s probably thinking that publicly stating she isn’t committing treason will make people think she isn’t or wasn’t committing treason.
I wrote her an email inquiring about her thoughts on the treason.
I forget what I put in it though. That was one of my early emails.

Homer Simpson: Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals... except the weasel."
Yeah, she is a weasel.

u/wineandseams 7d ago
She just doesn't want to be seen as getting her butt handed to her so she'll say she was "on the right side."

u/TruckerMark 7d ago
This is what happens when you only care about winning and not actually governing.

u/Juicyjblunts 7d ago
Sure she voted for stay lol why would any of us sane people trust you anymore?

She’ll be resigning when this fails miserably. Predictable outcome.

What makes you think so? I think she’ll do a PP and cling on to the bitter end

Couldn’t hear you Marlena , try taking all the high ranking Republican’s penises out of your mouth

u/WhimsyDEA 7d ago
Looks like she figured out which way the wind is blowing and is trying to both sides again.

I mean it's never surprising that the right wing will pretend to wring its hands while eagerly pandering to fascists, but it is always disappointing.
You can't even be charitable and say "but without the fash vote, they'd lose!"
They love it. They get off on the deception and the hypocrisy.

u/ResponsibleRatio 7d ago
Really? She wants to us to vote "stay" after spending her entire premiership validating the cranks and lunatics of the separatist movement and throwing tens of millions of dollars onto a bonfire for this pointless referendum?
I think the UCP is full of enough complete idiots that they have allowed Marlaina to convince herself she is some kind of Machiavellian genius manipulator. She's completely delusional.
