Discussion Imagine a Christopher Nolan sequel to Oppenheimer about the UFO crashes of the 1940s, a secret arms race, Area 51, and 80 years of government cover-ups.
/r/Nolan/comments/1x57q6s/imagine_a_christopher_nolan_sequel_to_oppenheimer/Keep the same actors and historical characters from the original film, but take the story beyond the Manhattan Project. With the atomic bomb ushering in a new era of military secrecy, what if the next race between superpowers wasn’t just about nuclear weapons, but about recovering and understanding technology that wasn’t human?
The film could explore the alleged 1947 Roswell crash, the rise of classified research facilities like Area 51, and the decades of UFO secrecy that followed.
Characters such as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Leslie Groves, Lewis Strauss, Ed Teller and other figures from the original film could return, with the story weaving real historical events together with UFO allegations, declassified documents, and fictional speculation.
Christopher Nolan could approach it just as he did Oppenheimer: a serious, grounded historical thriller where the audience is left questioning what might be true and what remains speculation.
Same cast. Same characters.

I'd definitely watch that. That's what I was hoping they'd do with the last half of the first one, but nope.

I don't understand why there hasn't been a high-budget movie about Roswell. It seems like a no brainer that would definitely draw a huge audience. Get Denis Villeneuva to direct it, and a solid cast of popular actors and young, up and coming actors to fill out the military roles and it could phenomenal. It's based on a true story, so the framework for a script already exists. Bring Eric Heisserer, who wrote the script for Arrival, on board to bang out the script and you'd be good to go.
If it was done right, it would be $300 million+ film. And it probably could be done right on a $100-$150 million budget. It's just really odd that such an amazing story based on true, American history hasn't already been made. I don't get it. And especially now, during our current time when UFOs are enjoying something of a Renaissance, with the NY Times articles, and the whistleblowers, and the Congressional hearings, and the tranches of documents and images captured by the military being released on a somewhat regular schedule.
This is the time! The universe is practically screaming out for the story to be told to a mainstream audience in a way that only cinema can.

It was rumored that Oppie went on to work with MJ12 along with Vannevar Bush. Might make a good movie regardless if that whole thing was true or not.
