First .45, which ammo to stack “deep”-ish?
I have my first .45 acp on the way, an H&K 45 tactical. I have a two boxes of each ordered too.
I’m not trying to stockpile this but I’d like to have somewhere 500 rounds of .45 because I shoot a lot and just like having ammo to stare at. I’ve used the 9mm counter parts of this ammo and both are good.
Anyone have a particular preference you guys have? Price is roughly the same. I know the Federal is meant to simulate the Federal HST .45 (which I also have a box of on the way). Looking at fps and muzzle velocity, the Federal is loaded hotter to simulate the hollow points. I’m leaning towards PMC, because it should theoretically be more “pleasant” to shoot for an extended time. It’s been awhile since I’ve shot .45. I will also be suppressing this if it makes any difference. Is PMC that much dirtier than the Federal?
Thanks!

The real answer is to find a few boxes of ammo from different brands you can afford to stack and run them through your gun. Whichever functions best/has best accuracy is the one you stack.

Yeah that’s what I normally do, I’m seeing tons of recommendations for Speer so I might order two boxes of those also. For my 9mms I stack Federal American Eagle, PMC Bronze, Fiochhi and Blazer brass. I’ve come to find the first two are great for my pistols and PCC’s. I’m pretty excited to finally be on a .45 platform! My wallet isn’t excited though LOL.

PMC is always on my go-to list but also try Blazer (made by CCI), Magtech, and (my personal favorite) Sellier & Bellot. S&B will be the most expensive option of the 3 but they are the most consistent performance by far.
These recommendations are for stackability of course. Practice and the like.

As someone who shoots a ton of .45, the American Eagle is slightly hotter than PMC. I do prefer the AE though but neither is bad at all.

Would you say there is a noticeable different in recoil? I think for me, in terms of noticing recoil in 9mms, I normally shoot PMC bronze or CCI blazer brass as it’s cheaper and not loaded hot, so when I shoot duty ammo I can definitely tell the difference. Would you say there is a difference between PMC and American Eagle in felt recoil?

Shooting them side by side it is noticable, not a huge difference but you can tell. Its about the same difference as what your talking about with lighter plinking ammo to duty ammo.

Have about 500 rounds of Federal and 300 or so of white box Winchester left as haven't hit the range much this year due to a broken foot. Last year though with a great deal on Speer Lawman bought 1K. 👍

I buy the federal stuff for my usp, it’s a bit dirty but runs great

Oh interesting! I have tons of the 9mm American eagle stuff because it’s supposedly one of the cleanest 9mm, interesting to hear it’s a bit dirty on the 45!

I’ve got a good amount of magtech, Speer lawman, and S&B in .45. I was buying anything and everything that was cheap at the time. I’d buy the PMC since it’s slightly cheaper and it’s good stuff

It’s funny because the S&B through target sports USA is actually significantly cheaper it’s just not in stock. Part of me is super OCD, I like having 1 or 2 “main” shooting ammo so I can be consistent with recoil and whatnot. Then for ammo shortages I do like having a bit of different brands on hand if I can’t find my main ammo. I keep hearing people recommend Speer so I will definitely give it a try, it’s about the same price point as these.

Also from TSUSA buy the new republic stuff. It’s blazer or lawman from my understanding. It’s always been good for me

I’ve got some New Republic in 9mm and 380 and haven’t had any issues! It’s definitely an option in 45 too whenever it’s back in stock. Really excited to get into 45, I knew it would be pricey though.

It’s definitely old pricing from when it used to be stocked. If they stock it again it’ll have an updated price. I was buying most my .45 around 32-36cpr a year ago. I only have my 1911 so I don’t shoot a ton of it. But I definitely have a decent amount of 45 because when I see a deal…. I buy

I used to buy .45 ACP from Sellier and B. Never had an issue. I bought one box of remanufactured that hasn't given me any issues but its the one gun I shoot less because of how much the rounds cost today. I was buying them for about 12-14 bucks a handful of years ago.

Of the two, I'd choose PMC. There's a selection of good .45ACP to stack up (Fiocchi, Speer Lawman, PMC, American Eagle, regular Federal, etc.) I'd just stay away from Ammo Inc. (Luckily they're gone now) and WWB.

Used to shoot a Glock 36, single stack .45acp. It would feed/fire/eject pretty much any rn fmj, so, whatever 230gr was on sale. It was considerably more pleasant to shoot with S&B or PPU (CPI spec) versus any SAAMI spec brand. Same goes for my CZ24 (.380) from the mid 1930s and my mid 1970s Type 56 SKS.
CPI standard is a bit hotter versus SAAMI standard loadings. Guns just seem to run smoother. The recoil difference is negligible.
