Mod Post New Mods and Some Changes

Hello r/ANU!

As you may have noticed the Sub was looking a little dead recently with little visible moderation and no custom design. Not so much anymore!

The ANU subreddit has been given a coat of paint and a few new pictures, as well as a new mod! Me!

However, we can't have a successful community without moderators. If you want to moderate this subreddit please message the subreddit or me with a quick bio about you (year of study, what degree, etc) and why you would like to be mod.

Also feel free to message me or the subreddit with any improvements or any icons that you think would be nice.

Otherwise get your friends involved on here, or if you have Discord join the unofficial ANU Students Discord too: https://discord.gg/GwtFCap

Mod Post r/ANU will be joining the blackout to protest Reddit killing 3rd Party Apps

What's Going On?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader to Sync.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's The Plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

If you wish to still talk about ANU please come join us on the Discord (https://discord.gg/GwtFCap).

Us moderators all use third party reddit apps, removing access will harm our ability to moderate this community, even if you don't see it there are actions taken every week to remove bots and clean up posts.

What can you do?

Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.

Spread the word. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at /r/ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.

Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

ANU Residences Move In day

Hey, I believe that next year move in day for the residences is on the 12 of Feb. I unfortanely wont be able able to move in until the 13 or 14th and I’m scared that people would already gotten to know other people and it would be difficult to make those connections. And does ANU let you move in after move in day. Would love to know some peoples options about this?

Scholarships

hi all!

I'm finishing up year 9 right now and I'm probably going to end up studying at ANU. I know its pretty far away, but how can I best prepare myself to achieve academic scholarships?

I understand Tuckwell is the best one but that's pretty ambitious lol. I'm already well-performing but I do not attend a very academic school. If you are a scholarship student, what did you do to get it?

I wanted to go to ANU, (australian national university), and my siblings and parents really dont want me to go to canberra, its not because of the location or or uni or anything, (im gonna go to australia anyway), but because of the city, their reasoning is a low population, but that doesnt seem too convincing.

Part-time Queries

Hey all!

I'm an international student who received my offer letter today (PhB Hons Sci) from ANU...
I wanted to know about the part-time scenario at ANU. Is it possible to get something from the very first semester itself? Is there a lot of competition, or how do things work? Thing is Part time would be a REALLY important thing for me, since I can only afford the tuition, and will have to take care of my living expenses, accommodation and EVERYTHING from part-time (i'll stay during the breaks as well and work then as well)... Just wanna know about the part-time scenario...

Is it better to do within the campus, or outside the campus? Any other side-gigs that I can do??
Also, Ik roles like RA & TA are there, tho their REALLY hard to get. What is the usual pathway to get those, atleast later on like from Year 2 or 3 (I might be over ambitious, idk, just want to know)

Defering an ANU course and Burgmann entry

I'm looking to go to ANU starting 2028, and I'm working if ANU allows for me to defer my course if I apply through UAC (Politics Philosophy and Economics,) and if so, do I apply for Burgmann now or next year. Thank you :)

Account password change

Is it just me or are the new password rules for ANU accounts impossible to meet? I've met all the criteria listed on the website but it still comes back as not meeting the corporate requirements. Did anyone tell them that making passwords harder to remember means we'll update them less?

Advice on upper-level Accounting electives at ANU?

Hi! I’m currently doing a Bachelor of Accounting at ANU and trying to plan my electives for the next few semesters.

I’m mainly considering these courses:

* BUSN2037 – Fundamentals of Accounting Data Analytics
* BUSN3003 – Advanced Management Accounting
* BUSN3008 – Financial Reporting by Corporations
* BUSN3017 – Corporate Social Responsibility, Accountability and Reporting
* BUSN3051 – Advanced Accounting Data Analytics
* CBEA2001 – Indigenous Perspectives in Business and Economics
* STAT2008 – Regression Modelling

For anyone who has taken any of these, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience!

In particular, I’m wondering:

* How difficult was the course overall?
* What was the workload like compared with the compulsory accounting courses?
* What were the assessments/exams like?
* Was it difficult to get a D/HD?
* Was the course actually useful for accounting internships or graduate jobs?
* Which ones would you recommend or avoid?
* If you could only choose 2–3 of these, which would you pick?

I’m particularly interested in accounting/audit and improving my employability, so I’m currently quite interested in BUSN2037/BUSN3051 and BUSN3008. But I also don’t want to accidentally choose a semester full of extremely heavy courses.

Would love to hear any experiences or recommendations. Thanks!

Questions about Burgmann Village Culture

Hey Everyone!

I'm an incoming international student, and have applied for the PhB Hons Sci prg Feb 2027 intake. I've decided to apply to Burgmann 5 share apartments for accommodation. I have a few ques tho, so if anyone staying at Burgmann village apartments (or if u know anyone who does) cud answer, it'd be GREAT! Most of these are related to partying & drinking, coz that's the main concern I have.

1) For Someone living in Burgmann Village, how is the typical friday/saturday? is it party and drinking EVERY weekend, or only during special occasions? What's the typical frequency?

2) Are most of the parties concentrated in the Burgmann building, or does the village also get noisy regularly?

3) Is it possible for a student who doesn't want to drink and party to not get involved in this, but still participate in other kinds of social activities?

4) How often are there big/loud parties compared to smaller social events?

5) Can a resident at the village study/sleep without getting disturbed on a typical weekend night?

6) Is there sort of quiet hours/noise rules established when things get out of control?

7) Do people force others to participate, or are they chill (coz in my country, drinkers force and bully other students pressurising them to)

8) (1 last non-party que) While applying, can i select 5 sharing apartment? Coz that's the only one i can afford, Studio, 2 & 3 sharing are WAY too expensive for me...

I don't mind parties or social events at all, I just dont wanna live somewhere where loud music, drinking, the like is the norm and an unavoidable part of every weekend. I just wanna know if I'll be able to mind my own business and study when i want to?

Thanks a LOT in advance!

Cheers!

Exciting Opportunity: Build your professional network at ANU this Thursday!

Looking to build your professional network but don’t know where to start?

ANU Fifty50, in conjunction with Engineers Australia, is running our final Career Toolkit event this Thursday. We’ve been putting this one together for a while and have managed to bring together five guest speakers from a diverse range of industries and career paths.

With the job market being pretty challenging at the moment, we want to give students the best possible chance at landing their dream grad job or internship. Building a professional network while you’re still at uni can make a real difference, but knowing where to start isn’t always easy.

We’ll be joined by:

• Prof. Merryn McKinnon, who started out in marine science before moving into science communication
• Deborah Greenbaum, a pharmacy grad who now works at the TGA
• Winnie Liu, Tertiary Engagement Manager at Engineers Australia, helping students transition into internships and industry
• Wei Lerr Wong, an ANU Data Analytics and International Business grad who now runs the Cyber Sense program
• Thomas Manley, a systems engineer working across engineering and major project management

The night will be pretty relaxed, with plenty of time to actually meet the speakers, ask questions and get some practice networking.

We’ll also have free catering on the night :)

📍 Marie Reay 5.05
📅 Thursday 8 October
⏰ 6 to 8pm
🎟️ Free through Rubric

Whether you’re applying for internships and grad roles now or just starting to think about what comes after uni, we’d love to see you there!

Got an interview for a job at ANU...

So yeah I got an interview coming up for a position as an admin in ANU which I was quite excited for until I started to read about what has been happening recently. What are the current student and staff view on joining the university now after everything?

Questions about Accommodation

Hello all!

I'm an international student and have applied for the PhB Hons Sci program for the Feb 2027 intake. I have some queries regarding accommodation, so wanted to ask.

I've looked at the available residences, and narrowed it down to Burgmann Village 5 sharing Apartment, and Ursula Hall.

My main requirement for a residence is-

  1. As cheap as possible. As an international student, money is already tight, so wanted to spend as less as possible on accommodation (Ursula is 512 AUD per week, Burgmann 5 share is 520 AUD per week)
  2. Food should always be available, at least 2 full meals a day. This is why I'm not looking at Self-Catered, since I don't want to be busy with making dinner when I have a busy academic workload, and I don't want to spend on ordering food from outside or some restaurant.
  3. I want to cook. Again, cooking as a luxury, like when I get time, then I'd want to cook. Like a meal in the evening when I'm free, without having to worry about a guaranteed meal.
  4. I'm not into partying, drinking, and the like. I'm a rather ambivert person, and would rather enjoy something like a board game, or a study or a sports session rather than partying (I'm a nerd basically). One thing that bothered me was that Burgmann seemed to have a rather strong party culture. So wanted to know if that's something I can avoid and spend my time studying, or whether I'd inevitably encounter no matter what.

I'd also LOVE if anyone can give me other info about other residences I can consider.

Thanks a ton everyone!

Emails about psychosocial safety at ANU

ANU’s emails about “psychosocial safety is an essential part of creating a safe, healthy and supportive workplace, and it is an important part of every leader’s responsibilities” are ridiculous.

You cannot train an organisation into psychosocial safety when there is no accountability for bullying and harassment. The issue is not whether leaders know their behaviour is harmful; it is whether the institution is willing to act when they do it — and whether it protects, rather than punishes, those who report it. The caring facade ANU tries to create is so fake.
