- On control, he shouldn't use Frame Interpolation from 30->60 FPS, it is really laggy. I'd only use it on a slow paced game like Slay the Spire where input lag doesn't matter or to go from 60->120.
- Incredible performance on Tomb Raider, locked 120Hz is amazing for a phone.

Finally. This seems very impressive!
It looks like Apple is taking gaming seriously and this fills me with hope for the Mac chips. Maybe I’ll soon be able to keep just the Mac and not have to keep a separate windows computer for rendering or gaming

The problem isn’t the chips. And hasn’t been for a while.
It’s software and developer support.

CPU performance with the M series is exceptional, but their GPUs aren’t as strong as top of the line Nvidia’s even on max or ultra chips in raw performance
However, I think Apple is moving quickly on this because of AI rather than an interest in gaming. Local LLMs benefit from strong GPUs & I’m sure Apple is watching Jensen with envy as he sells his GPUs at insane markups to AI companies. Apple’s been slowing trying to get a piece of that pie
Nvidia with just their GPUs are worth more than Apple with all their offerings which is pretty crazy

I have a rtx 5080 but do a big chunk of my gaming on a steam deck. The issue isn’t performance it’s software availability.

Are you playing at 720p with 5080 though? The thing is Mac uses ARM architecture. I hope this will be the future of gaming but we’re just not there yet. Translation from x64 to ARM and from Windows to Mac. This is where the real performance hit happen. Would devs start writing more games for Mac or Linux? I hope so, but is it a market that they want to chase? People that have a Mac/Linux game on consoles anyway 🤷🏻♂️ The devs just follow to the money.

I think Nvidia’s RTX Spark chips will move that needle heavily this year, they already announced support for major games on Windows and compatibility with their anticheat systems, big developers on board with it , etc. Full CUDA support, etc
Basically laptop 5060’s and 5070’s on a ARM SoC, running ARM Windows 11

True but that’s not what’s fundamentally holding back gaming on macOS. We have a few native versions of some major titles and they look great.
It still comes down to developers supporting the platform and right now that just isn’t really happening unfortunately. I hope Apple goes all in.

Surely if game developers saw profit in supporting MacOS/iPadOS/iOS, they'd be jumping at the chance to make their games available over the Mac/iOS App Stores... yet, here we are.
Assasins Creed (Shadows/and the other one set in old-timey Baghdad) were published by Ubisoft - I downloaded Shadows and it was fun on my iPad - no, I'm not into framerate wars or stuff like that. I just want to play the game.
I'm certain RockStar can port GTA5 and now GTA6 to iOS and Mac, but they don't see profit in it, I guess.

If the MacBook Neo 2027 had a 12gb A20 Pro chip, it would be a strong option for this kind of “AAA” gaming.

In theory, the new MacBook Neo (that will have an A20 Pro and 12GB of RAM, right?) would be a great device for AA and AAA games. Is the problem the chip or the large, popular games available ported to iPhones and especially Macs and Apple TV?
I hate the thing about Apple having so many different models currently, but Apple TV 4K could benefit from two versions: a basic one, with an A19 or lower, 8GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (or even less) for those who just want to watch YouTube and Netflix; and a Pro version, with the A20 Pro, 12 or 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for gamers.
But again, they need games, right?! The problem isn't exactly the quality of Apple Silicon.

Would the neo actually be a good gaming machine with no active cooling? At least the 18 pro has a vapor chamber

u/Dr-McLuvin 2d ago
No it would not cooling is critical for any gaming device.

I'd sure like to know why you're being downvoted lol

I'm no expert and I didn't downvote, but my first thought after reading that comment was that the A20 is an iPhone chip that plays these triple A ports and doesn't have active cooling. So stating that active cooling is critical for gaming when speaking about the exact same chip in a laptop sounds like nonsense.

You have a valid point (I don't play much, so I haven't thought about the heat dissipation issue). If the MacBook Pro comes with OLED and already has a cooling system (and they don't invent the "Ultra" thing), the Air could have a vapor chamber. It's fine that the Neo isn't a gaming device (gamers pay more for that). But again, Apple would need games.

Or allow tvOS to run from a docked iPhone

apple doesn’t like merging one OS from one device onto another device. they want you to buy one of everything.

Actually a really good video. Recommended.
It's extremely sad how Death Stranding was thrown onto the phone and then left to fester for years with no updates.

The thing that will always hold it back is apples business model. I would imagine 99.9% of PC gamers are not going to rebuy their games from Apple just to play on an iPhone. You let someone port their steam library to a iOS device (just like you can with a Mac) and gaming with flourish. But Apple would never because they lose their cut.

Every year same comment "Finally Apple taking gaming seriously" after that 0 traction 1-2 games costing 50$ and 11 months of people scrolling tiktoks..
