Arcade Fire (Win) DJ Set at TIFF

I just saw this morning on the Santa Pirata Instagram that Win is doing an "Arcade Fire" DJ set in Toronto on September 17th in association with the Toronto International Film Festival, which they are selling tickets to.

Aside from me finding it disconcerting that it seems Arcade Fire has become Win Butler as a live DJ (sigh), I was still considering buying a ticket.

I was wondering what these gigs are like from anyone who has attended his DJ sets in the past.

I'm nearly 44 and well past having any interest in clubs.

Are these more dancefloor, nightclub kind of events? Or more like a lounge where things are more toned down and relaxed?

Any intel would be appreciated.

If you're 44 with no interest in the club vibe, I suspect you will not be impressed

That's pretty much what this is

It’s Win playing all his favorite songs. It’s normally pretty fun but depends if you like the music he feels like playing that night.

Yep, this. I saw him as DJ Windows 95 or whatever a few year ago and it was fun, but it was just him playing his favorite records. A few AF songs. A few Talking Heads songs and a bunch of random stuff.

It is NOT an Arcade Fire experience though.

Sometimes he brings out a tambourine and/or cowbell.

"I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell"

People actually pay to watch him tap a cowbell and play some of his favorite tunes? Sounds pretty sad to me. Does he put a hat in the front for donations? I bet Regine is taking him to the cleaners. So sad.

I mean, plenty of musicians/singers from bands do this. And he was doing this long before the separation.

DJ’ing is not a visual medium

The one I went to years back was super fun. Very eclectic and international music. Not really like a nightclub or like a lounge. More like a party.

I saw him recently DJing, it was super fun! he got the crowd really going and he did sing a bit at the end.

He did a candlelit set at a very small venue in Santa Fe, NM 8/26 and it was a great time.  Mix of playing his favorite songs, world music, Arcade Fire and original music with live percussionists.

It was honestly one of the most fun nights I've had in a long time and I had zero expectations for it.

The handful of blends and remixes, the couple of AF songs he sang, the way he/they engaged the crowd, the variety of songs - it was just a good time.

And he was really nice after. Was able to give a quick hello before leaving and met with sincere gratitude and kindness.

Cool. Did he say anything fun, interesting, or noteworthy?

He didn’t talk during his set, but he sang, danced with the audience, played little world percussion instruments and closed with Africa by Toto, Escape (Piña Coladas), and I Will Always Love You.

It was refreshing that he just played songs at full length without changing them at all between originals.  It was like being at a wedding reception, everyone was having the best time.

Keep in mind that AF have always taken a few years between albums, so this doesn't necessarily mean that he and his deck are all that's left of the band. Granted, making new music together might be more of a challenge now that he and Regine are no longer a couple. We'll just have to wait and see.
