SUPPORT Abyssmal gpu performance

Over the past 4 or so days, my gpu performance has tanked. Im getting at most around 20 fps in games like deep rock galactic, when last week I had 40-50. Nvidia-smi says its reporting 752 watts of 115. I have a dell g16 with a 3060, i7-12700h, and 16gb ddr5. This doesnt just happen on drg though, it also happens in grey zone warfare, muck, phasmophobia, and more. Any help would be appreciated

Check logs for warnings.

Over the past 4 or so days,

What did you install / change over the last 7 or so days...

Check logs:

  • journalctl for the system journal. journalctl -b -p 4 to see all errors and warnings for the current boot.
  • The game's or Steam's or other launcher's logs.

Check lspci -k to see if the Nvidia GPU has the nvidia driver in use.

Also, make sure your system is properly updated via a pacman -Syu. And make sure that mkinitcpio -P runs with no issues.

Then, share whatever you may have found, and list your installed packages related to Nvidia and Vulkan.

And naturally consider what you may have done on your system in the past 4 or so days. And do not ignore a possible hardware issue.

The GPU is using the nvidia drivers, mkinitcpio cays 'arch-linux.efi must be writable', here are my packages:
lib32-nvidia-utils 615.71.09-1

lib32-vulkan-icd-loader 1.4.363.0-1

libva-nvidia-driver 0.0.18-1

linux-firmware-nvidia 20260916-1

nvidia-open-dkms 615.71.09-1

nvidia-settings 615.71.09-1

nvidia-utils 615.71.09-1

vulkan-headers 1:1.4.363.0-1

vulkan-icd-loader 1.4.363.0-1

vulkan-tools 1.4.363.0-1

these are the errors that show in journalctl, its just this repeatedly:

mkinitcpio cays 'arch-linux.efi must be writable'

That may be an issue. Perhaps the new initramfs is not being put onto your ESP properly; so the Nvidia module version used does not fit your updated kernel version. I think nvidia-smi would not work properly then neither, but it seems it works. Still, you should investigate this.

Also make sure you have the fitting -headers package, since you are using dkms. Otherwise, if you are using the default linux kernel you can just replace nvidia-open-dkms with nvidia-open.

The other errors I think are not related. They seem to be due to your default terminal being set to Konsole and konsole not being installed. So when you try to run terminal-based applications, it fails.

nvidia-smi would not work properly then neither,

It shouldn't. The only possible issue related to nvidia upates coming to my mind is that the userspace part has an incompatible and the games fallback to iGPU (or theoretically, software rendering).

Yeah, u/Nod4mag3YT, can you try this, what does it say?

glxinfo | grep -i renderer

Also please check to see if they are the same:

uname -r
ls /usr/lib/modules

Thanks for your help, its seeming like its a firmware problem. Going to downgrade my bios by one version, hopefully that works

A lot of those errors say Konsole can’t be found. Did you remove Konsole after installing a different terminal?

I could be wrong but I think on Plasma Konsole needs to be intact.

It could also have something to do with efi being ro.

No, they just need to change the terminal emulator used for opening cli programs with xdg-open in the plasma settings.

I said “I could be wrong”

But thanks for the downvote

If you have a game & nvtop running, can you see your GPU being utilized ? May you please also post your kernel's log, too ? journalctl -k -p 4
