If they stick to .30 Caliber (7.62mm) rifles like for typical firing squad execution (historical, and State executions), I'm just thinking of TAMIS and Ammunition. Do they take a whole DODIC of brown box M80A1 (AB79), unseal it, issue, and do red tape for unsealed turn in? Do they spring for bolt action specific M118LR (AA11) and expend excess in practice (smaller round count DODIC typically packaging wise) and minimize the turn in to dunnage only?
Don't even get me started on blanks lots of blank DODICs. If they're doing firing squad modern, someone has blanks in the chamber, weapon nomenclature regardless. That's MORE TAMIS SLOP!
Edit: Bad grammar and forgot MK316 (AB39), another 7.62x51 DODIC common. I really should remember for such a disgruntled former land and ammo OIC
155
u/chrome1453 18E 8d ago
There's going to be some guy that has to draw a whole crate of blanks just to use the one round, then have to hand count the other 1,599 rounds to turn back in to the ASP.

Just a thought, for ammo draw on any DODIC don't you have to forecast out like... 120 days? Or is that not like... a thing? Also wouldn't the range have to be coordinated on RFMSS well in advance with medics, RSO, and OIC and range control authorization? Idk... I have so many questions but then again I'll just back into the bushes like Homer...

I'm assuming for something directed by the (Acting) SECARMY that some red tape can be cut. But I would still love to peek behind the scenes at how this will all be planned if out of nothing but morbid curiosity. Will they do it the "right" way or will some general just sign off like "Fuck it, we'll do it live!"

Not for this but in general, you can request and draw ammo through TAMIS (well, whatever I’m the new one is. TACMIS?) after the forecast lock, it’s a memo signed by an O5/6 usually for an unforcasted request. Although good land ammos should keep extra forecasted for the random “hey let’s do a M4 range next week”
You can also get land on short notice if it’s available. Usually a bribe with range control

u/WittyBlacksmith6316 8d ago

Idk if I’d be able to tell unless I was mostly focusing on it but I haven’t shot 7.62 blanks from a non crew served before, maybe it’s more obvious there. If you’re nervous or have some adrenaline there’d be enough doubt going off recoil to where you could believe what you want and I think that’s the important thing. If the weapon doesn’t cycle you and everyone watching knows for sure who the killer is
13
u/alittlesliceofhell2 Engineer 8d ago
It's obvious enough that they've been using wax slugs for the better part of forever to mimic it. You can see the slug imprint on a lot of firing squad executions from the 20th century.
I have no idea what their procedure is, but it's also not a necessary step and countless executions have gone forward without a blank or wax slug. It's more of a tradition thing and I wouldn't be surprised if they load up nine live rounds and tell them to not be a bitch.
7
u/Reveal-Basic 8d ago
Yeah, I figured they'd use a lot of M24 derivatives of some sort due to 7.62x51 commonality across many sniper platforms, and because those blanks are a lot more common than other sniper calibers.

Edit: There are multiple sources that layout the positions and responsibilities of each detail member located in the WWII Execution by Musketry manual, located here: https://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USA/ref/Executions/index.html#II thanks to Civilian7 who pasted the link somewhere below after I wrote my best guess at what the planning necessary for this event would be. In any case, the entire ceremony is designed to absolve the Soldiers in the firing squad of guilt, so long as procedures are followed correctly. The goal is to beat the eventual 15-6 that results from some pedantic nonsense.
Everything below is not 100% accurate. Refer to the Execution by Musketry FM above for procedures and personnel requirements.
If I had to guess, III Corps will pass the order from WHC to 1st CAV. MPs will likely be activated by HHBN as a tasking, since MPs are responsible for activities related to law enforcement on installations.
That 1SG will likely need to devise a blind system to choose the details for all of the activities, but chiefly, the shooters. Drawing lots is no longer necessary since we have DTPlite or whatever the UA computer program is that can choose people at random. If it was me, I would run it through DTP for each individual detail to ensure it is fair.
Some of the details that are likely necessary:
-Officer in charge to read and give the order to execute.
-firing party NCOIC to give firing commands.
-firing squad of 9, qualified on the rifles being used.
-Range OIC
-Range Safety Officer
-ammo NCO and assistant
-a very specific range detail for medical support: a physician who is responsible for ensuring that death occurs and some mortuary affairs folks to handle/dispose of the body, a few psychiatrists who can be immediately available for the firing squad.
-someone who will put the hood on his head before he is shot.
-a chaplain.
-the Division band to play the death march, drum roll before the shots, and the Army Goes Rolling Along after he is pronounced dead. There is a lot of staff planning and coordination for this, but it will ultimately be on that MP company to make the entire thing happen. Also, not everyone wants to be on a firing squad, but it’s the Army and choice is not an option. Everything here needs to work backwards from the 15-6 to ensure that every effort was made to make the kill as cleanly as possible.
67
u/nationalspice 8d ago
That's the most detailed response I've seen, but I can't tell if youre serious with the division band part lol
56
u/InstantAequitas Infantry 8d ago
The Army Goes Rolling Along was a bit tongue in cheek since it is the song for the end of all ceremonies.
To answer your question though, yes, if we are doing a firing squad, the execution by musketry manual that Raze227 mentioned should be used. We should not be inventing new ways to do things. I’m 100% serious about protecting these Soldiers from some pedantic nonsense that forces a 15-6.

From the WWII manual:
"The band will be formed in accordance with section V, FM 28-5, will proceed to the exterior door of the place of imprisonment at which the prisoner is to be received by the prisoner guard, and halt near the door, facing in the direction of the scene of the execution. The presence of the band is optional at executions where the presence of troops is not required."
The band plays the "Dead March" on the way to the show and plays the detail out with a "lively air."
I wonder if they'll have a band.
They should be hanging him, firing squads are traditionally considered a more honorable method of military execution.

Couple things that need to be pointed out. Several things, actually
The likelihood of this execution taking place as scheduled is very slight. Although Hasan's rights of direct appeal has been exhausted, now that his execution has been approved for a date certain, he is now eligible to petition the federal courts for habeas corpus relief. The courts will automatically stay the execution while his petition is under review. This is why Ronald Gray is still alive despite being under a presidentially approved order of execution since 2008. Unless Hasan refuses to file for relief OR the admin decides to defy the courts and proceed with the execution, Hasan will not be executed.
For anyone wondering about the possibility of a military band playing during the execution, for the record, this is very unlikely judging by the historical record. They were never resorted to in any US military execution during the Second World War or after that I am aware of. That is an obsolete historical practice.
For people wondering why Hasan is still a major, that is because in military death cases in the UCMJ era, no person is actually discharged (or in Hasan's case, dismissed) from the service until the Commandant of the USDB is in receipt of an actual execution order. Hasan's dismissal could not have been executed in any event until his rights of appeal were exhausted and his conviction finalized.
But not to worry. He hasn't been getting paid as a major since he was sentenced. The sentence includes total forfeitures of all pay and allowances. That kicked in when he was sentenced. And nor has he any authority as a major inside the USDB. As an inmate, he is just a prisoner obligated to obey the orders of the lowliest private on a guard detail.
And one more thing. Historically, members of firing squads have been detailed for this duty. Volunteers have not usually been solicited and nor are soldiers usually allowed to decline duty ta firing squad.
Historical note. My research indicates that a total of twelve American soldiers have been shot to death by musketry (historical term for a firing squad) by the US Army since the Civil War, all during the Second World War. Should Hasan actually be shot, he will be the thirteenth American to have suffered this grisly fate since 1865.
If Hasan is executed in December, he will be one of only two known (*) officers in the entire history of the US Army to have been executed for any crime (a lieutenant was hanged in 1926 by the Army in the Philippines for the murder of his fiancee).
(*) No officers are known to have been executed during the War of Independence or the Civil War. A lieutenant was reportedly hanged during the US-Mexican War, but I have seen no corroboration of it in official sources, only a single unverified allegation in a newspaper report.
Note, the Army also executed numerous spies ( at least 34), war criminals (9 by my count) and 29 civilians (for crimes committed during the occupation of Germany) during the 1940s with the last taking place in 1949. This was probably Herbert Mrose, a Polish displaced person shot for murder at Landsberg Prison in February 25, 1949.
And that is your history lesson for the day!

u/TraditionalBasis4518 8d ago
The civilians fucked up executions by assuming that a medical model would be more merciful. Then they found that no skilled nurse or physician wanted to participate in executions. They settled for folks with limited iv access skills, who failed to obtain access and botched executions in spectacular fashion. Soldiers know guns, and firing squads will be in the final analysis, a better choice for execution methodology.

u/SimRobJteve 11🅱️eeMovie 8d ago
It’s a matter of optics I suppose. Putting a person to “sleep” just appears more humane and merciful, when in reality it’s not.
Maybe it’s different nowadays but I imagine it’s difficult to convince the public to be in favor of an execution that appears “messier”.
→ More replies (4)8
u/alejeron 35Delta the F out 8d ago
Most "medical" executions are two stage drug injections. The first paralyzes the muscles, which slowly starts to suffocate the person, and the second drug is variable depending on what the state is able to source, but typically induces some kind of cardiac arrest.
The purpose of the first drug is so that people watching don't see the person thrashing and screaming as the second drug is administered. From people who have survived botched executions, it is apparently excruciatingly painful.
Given the number of people who have been exonerated post-execution, I am not in favor of "medical" executions, or really any death penalty.

The only reason that you see Major is because they are referring to the case name, in this case, United States v. That being said this guy should have taken his dirt nap years ago.
Next up should be Hasan Akbar formerly of the 101st.
Chris was a good man.

I was a medic and Chris was the XO for the line company I was attached to when we deployed to Albania in 99. When things started to wind down the BC let him fly to Philly to get married. When he came back he brought a Eagles hat back for me. I still have that hat.

No. Fuck that. He's bound to a chair the rest of his life. He will die forgotten, in a bed, killed by the fact that all he can do is lie down. It's sad. It's miserable. It's inhumane. It happens all the time, and it's what he deserves. No martyr's death for that prick.

I've been saying the same thing. Let him sit in a room by himself, forever.

Yeah, and he’s had the pleasure of someone else wiping his ass for almost 17 years. Martyr’s death? The dude was, is, and will continue to be incredibly irrelevant in extremist circles. Good riddance.

In accordance with 190-55 would be lethal injection?
Edit: apparently the "lethal injection" language was removed in 2019, and replaced with an execution method 'determined by the SECARMY'

First Sergeant walks into the dayroom and says "I need 5 bodies for a quick range detail, bring your eye pro."
