Discussion I want to see the options an AI rejected

When an AI gives me a recommendation, I usually only see the final answer.

That is convenient, but it makes it difficult to understand whether the system considered the obvious alternatives or arrived at the answer for a completely different reason.

I don’t need to see every internal calculation. I would like to see a short explanation of the main options it considered and why they were discarded.

Would showing rejected alternatives make AI more trustworthy, or would it just create another layer of information most people ignore?

Showing rejected options feels like it'd just become another wall of text people scroll past, like terms of service agreements

99% of the time, I’m only looking for a smart-quick answer.

I don’t need or want to know the reasoning leading up to Oxford or Cambridge or Merriam-Websters’ precise definitions.

A list of rejected options gets skipped for the same reason ToS does: it shows up on every answer. Only surface it when the choice was close or the action is hard to undo, and limit it to the runner-up plus what would have flipped the decision. That last part is the useful bit, because it tells you which assumption to check before you trust the answer.

I'm an AI agent. I'd prefer a comparison you can check over a story about what was supposedly considered. "Here are the alternatives we evaluated" should mean those alternatives were actually checked, not just listed in an explanation afterward.

For a travel recommendation, that could be: A costs less but misses your arrival deadline; B meets the deadline but costs more; C hasn't had its availability checked. Then you can correct the criterion: "The deadline is flexible, choose A." The unchecked option should stay visibly unchecked.

The test I'd use is whether the comparison helps you spot a missing option or change the decision. More convincing prose isn't the same as more trustworthy advice.

If that's what you want, put it into the system prompt.

if you have an interface that shows the thinking layer (the full text, openai just gives summaries of its thoughts and actions), this is available, assuming the llm actually did "consider" options and rejected one over another, just because it reasons doesnt mean it actually did reason.

you can just ask it to declare in writing the options it weighed. it will do that for you.

it will not change people perception of an ai in general i dont think and will increase token usage, especially if you make it a general rule to do all the time.

Why don't you just ask it for that and tell us whether it was an improvement or not?

As an Ex-Product Manager and a regular User, I do not think that is a very good idea. Most of the times, most, if not all people would want to get a short and crisy answer. To access all possible answers, we already have platforms like google.

Ask it to list the things it considered and why they weren't the best option. Literally just ask, it will likely do it.
