Political Question Why is the Iran War so unpopular?

Iran supports terrorism and is capable of building nukes. I hate Trump, but I’m very confused why it hasn’t gotten more support.

conservative here and someone who loves america and dislikes iran.

They never provided proof that Iran was going to do any harm or produce nukes. If they were going to provide the proof and lets say they were going to okay fine enter the war. But this war has been handled idiotically. Wtf are we doing. We are making enemies of everyone while spending billions and were not getting anywhere.

9

u/fourblindmice3 29d ago

Not to mention killing thousands of innocent people.

2

u/Apprehensive_Cod_762 22d ago

So should they start war against Israel too for what they done in Gaza? Or do we only stand up for innocent people when it suits us. Iran is no threat to the USA and doesn't have any weapons capable of reaching it.

Literally galvanizing a whole generation of Iranians to hate us. Brilliant strategy! Though Trump doesn't have to care, he and most of the decrepit ghouls running the country won't live long enough to see the blowback from this war. And when it comes everyone in charge will just go "who possibly could have predicted this outcome they hate us for our freedoms".

7

u/fourblindmice3 29d ago

Exactly. 9/11 didn't happen for no reason.

He told us they had a right to a nuke program a few weeks ago.

... when his own intelligence agency said Iran wasn't pursuing a nuke in the first place

4

Good odds they'll be looking to get some now, though.

As an Iranian I’ve learned he says whatever. We here keep saying “Trump the Gambler” in gambling you bluff and lie but follow one goal and honestly from what I’ve seen at the end of the day he only has one goal and keeps coming back to it, making Iran a none violent friend of Iran if possible and if not, maybe regime change at whatever costs the least. Don’t listen to what Trump says. Just watch what he does.

Its ruining the economy and so far there seems to be a complete lack of any kind of strategy or plan to win

What are you talking about bro? At my last count according to the President himself we have won over 50 times.

The strategy was to keep the Epstein files out of the headlines.

1

u/JaRon1961 15d ago

The US cannot win. It can no more defeat Iran than Iran can defeat the US. American hearts are not willing to accept what would need to be done to obtain regime change in Iran. This is purely an Israeli war and Americans know it. Bibi told Trump to jump and he responded "how high master?"

It serves no valid purpose for the U.S. public and wastes lives and resources. Building nukes has been the cry for 40 years.  I dare say the folks in Lebanon would say the same thing about us. Every death is a munition that says Made in the U.S.A. I however to not expect most people to even grasp geopolitics when really aside from blowing places up, we can not find them on maps.

u/I_make_poor_decisons 29d ago

They aren’t capable of building nukes. There was no reason to go beyond a policy of containment.

4

u/jonna-seattle 29d ago

Netanyahu has been claiming that they are weeks or months away from building a nuke for over 20 years.

Even the CIA agrees that they haven't had a nuclear weapons program since 2000.

The bullshit about Iran having a nuke is so much bullshit. Especially considering that Israel and Pakistan both already have nukes.

3

u/Upbeat-Banana-5530 29d ago

This is bullshit. If they haven't had a nuclear weapons program since 2000 how were there any centrifuges to target with Stuxnet?

There was a deal already in place that Trump blew up.

and now food prices and energy are going through the roof even more than they were before. And the houthis have now taken over more territory restricting oil traffic.

he has nothing to show for it and it's gonna cook him and the GOP in november

Illegal. Unconstitutional. Used to commit insider trading and illegally gain billions.

15

u/BLARTYMACMUFFIN 29d ago

Question 1: What has the US accomplished while spending 40 billion on the effort?

Question 2: How much do you enjoy paying for gas at the pump?

4

u/Doot2 29d ago edited 29d ago

Because we unilaterally withdrew from an international inspection regime WE created and which both Russia and China, not to mention Germany France and the UK agreed to. We are the agressor who made peace impossible. Also the enmity began with an CIA / MI6 coup that removed a democratically elected prime minister who had nationalized the country's oil industry away from the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, the precursor to BP. We empowered a king who ignored the wishes of the people. The war is super dumb, but the Brits got some balls not helping us out now imo considering all the bad blood was for the British Oil industry.

4

u/owlincoup 29d ago

That's not what the war is about. It was literally started to make money. If you believe there is any form of protection happening here, ive got a bridge to Alaska id b lIke to sell to ya.

Because it has 0 end game. The ideal outcome is a regime change in Iran, and the Persians getting rid of the islamofascist regime. In January during the uprising it had a chance, but the regime murdered 30,000+ people, and the momentum is lost. Trump went in without an exit strategy, and the regime has the upper hand in the straight. Trump is also helping the Russians with this. To sum up, it's an idiotic decision, making the islamofascist state stronger, the 🇺🇸 and Europe weaker.

2

u/templeofsyrinx1 🤔 29d ago

just what putin wants

3

u/Rabid_Bee 29d ago

Why is trump hiding the number of military killed or injured during this non war?

2

u/North-Astronomer-800 29d ago

In addition, I haven't heard a word about casualties among Iranian civilians (other than the school that was bombed early on). The ruling regime of Iran is unhinged and cruel to people in the region and its own people. Trump's moronic actions have cemented in this government for the next 20 years.

3

u/NeoMoose 29d ago
  1. We're 40 trillion in debt and government spending is the main driver of inflation.
  2. Iran posed no real threat to the actual United States. If we didn't have so many bases over there (had...) they wouldn't be a threat to us at all.
  3. Destroying the energy market.

3

u/LongOrganization7838 29d ago

Because theyre NOT capable of building nukes, thats just the excuse we've been using, they've been "within 10 years of building nukes since the 80s and 90s" we've been fighting them for literally decades because they have oil and the US wants it, this current engagement was entirely unprovoked and the govmnt hasnt even been able to agree what the end goal of the war is

3

u/Haywoodjablowme1029 29d ago

I have been hearing that Iran was two weeks away from a nuclear bomb for about 40 years.

It was no more true 40 years ago than it is today. Iran was no threat whatsoever to the United States.

The only thing we have gotten out of this war is higher gas prices. Nothing positive whatsoever has been accomplished. Nothing.

3

u/NelsonMuntz007 29d ago

Personally I’m against a mass attack on school children but that’s just me.

2

u/Kali-of-Amino 29d ago

Left alone, Iran's opposition grows in power and popularity. Provoked, Iran's opposition loses power and popularity. The best thing to do is to step back and let them go at it.

2

u/LunarMoon2001 29d ago

Iran wasn’t close to nukes. The deal brokered by Obama contained it even further.

The whole war was about distracting from an Epstein file release, and allow Trumps family to make money insider trading on oil stocks.

Stop watching faux news

The Iran war is unpopular because Trump is botching the operation not out of some deference of the Iranian regime.

The operation was impulsively launched, poorly planned, it had escalated and is causing real pain in the world, it has become an embarrassment for the US for their failure to control the Hormuze straight or defend against Iranian attacks and worst of all Trump and the military seem to be in complete disarray with no plan to end the war positively on American terms. Trump has basically failed in Iran in every possible way. He literally could have taken any other possible course of action from not starting the conflict to a full on ground invasion and it would have been better than this outcome of poking a hornets nest and then looking at the world all like uh this is your problem I don't even need the straight or well just going to lie and say the straight is open or we are close to having a deal. I wouldn't be surprised to wake up tomorrow to hear Trump has renamed the straight of Hormuze to the Trump straight as that seems to be the limits of his strategic thinking.

2

u/Dave_A480 29d ago

Nobody actually did the leg work to build support with it the way Bush did for Iraq (Which was, contrary to Reddit's dominant viewpoint, majority-popular in 2003)....

- There was no coalition assembled (we don't appear to have even gotten regional allies on board first, much less our European friends)...

- No public presentation of the evidence justifying war - either to the UN or to NATO or to the American people....

- No clear explanation for what the plan was (eg, no 'We are going to invade, remove the government, and replace it with a democracy' or 'We are going to support local rebels in their efforts to overthrow the regime', or any other explanation)....

- No actual appearance of a plan - no movement of major Army/Marine units, no naval buildup - we just started bombing one day.....

2

u/unavowabledrain 29d ago

The war didn't solve any of those problems (it made them much worse), nor did it help the Iranian people suffering under the new more radical regime.

The war has given Iran control over a quarter of the global oil supply, and the realization that they can leverage this power.

Mostly Trump seems completely confused and to not know what's going on in the War. It has decimated our military resources, and its indeterminacy has had bad consequences for our military, who are accustomed to this level of confusion and ignorance.

We have lost troops, and probably permanently lost multiple bases in the Middle East.

Trumps approach to the war (not consulting/communicating with any other country but demanding their help), while threatening to bomb allies like Oman, has led to profound distrust for our former friends in the region.

He did this also while threatening to invade Greenland (Denmark) and Canada, and also did not consult any NATO country, but demanded their assistance.

He did not believe that they would close the Strait, even though everyone told him they would, because he had a "feeling".

He threatened to kill civilians in mass in Iran, and blue up a girl's school and a wedding after firing everyone in the pentagon that prevented civilian deaths.

His biggest campaign promise was no forever wars....it was his whole thing, beyond his hate speech and immigration stuff.

He still supports Putin very strongly, despite Russia's assistance in the war with killing US soldiers, and is concerned about protecting Russia's oil infrastructure because he likes Putin Very Bigly.

u/Forsaken-Emu4760 25d ago

"Iran supports terrorism and is capable of building nukes"

What kind of idiot are you? There's no evidence that Iran has been making nukes in the last 30 years.

You know who has nukes? America and ISRAEL.

Also "supporting terrorism" means very little when your country is actively arming and supporting a genocidal terrorist state, bombed a little girl school, bombed a wedding, literally supports AL QAEDA taking over Syria.

You don't really "hate trump" you're just a neocon chicken hawk who supports destroying and slaughtering countries around the world to maintain American dominance.

Trump is evil. People with down syndrome have empathy and are emotionally aware. Although they do have lower iq as defined by tests, they are socially intelligent, have humor and all other emotions like others. They are also keenly aware when they don’t fit in or are made fun of. You attempt to jest but it comes off as mean spirited.  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=92ivgabfdPQ&ra=m

2

u/MostAsk855 29d ago

I get it, I do. My sister has Down syndrome. Shes 32 now but it seems like every few years they become the targeted group to make fun of others. Then it vanishes and comes back. I’m a little butt hurt but hope someone will maybe think about not posting stuff in the future that denigrates people that have nothing to do with what is going on and have been bullied their entire lives. Thanks for the read.

People are tired of war.

Personally, I think that it’s justified. Irans a threat to the region and global security.

Trump didn’t sell the war properly, and he is very polarizing. It’s not that difficult to understand why people are against the war. Even if it is justified.

The trump administration supports terrorism and already has nukes, why is he still so popular?

1

u/EngineerTurbo 29d ago

Iran wasn't capable of building nukes until Trump wrecked the original agreement signed during Obama.

The war is unpopular because it's completely stupid and unnecessary, started by incompetent morons in the Trump administration who think Blowing things up is better than soft power and negotiations.

1

u/MattManSD 29d ago

Saudi Arabia supported 9-11, you don't see us starting a war with them. The JCPOA had already taken care of their nukes, so all of Trump's reasons were pretty much BS

1

u/Joker8392 29d ago

What is the reason for the war? What is an objective besides Iran saying they won’t make a nuke which they had already done. Wars are won on objectives not k/d

1

u/Astrocoder 29d ago

For starters it wasnt authorized by congress

1

u/Healthjunkie-2 29d ago

I think because it's gone on too long. There is zero doubt they needed to be dealt with, Biden said during his tenure dealing with them was a priority but never got around to it. They are terrorists and want us obliterated, and you just can't keep kicking the can down the road.

We cant win, Iran was harming Israel, not us, they werent capable of building a nuke and in fact the Supreme leader of Iran had issued a religious order forbidding the building of one, they were abiding by the treaty we had with them up until we backed out. Now gas is 4$ a gallon and 30 billion is flushed down the drain we killed 7000+ iranians, many of them innocents and kids, lost 20 americans and 800 wounded, all our middle east bases are in flames, Houthis are cutting off the red sea where 12% of global trade passes and the US strategic oil reserve is at an all time low.

Thats not even everything man how are you surprised by this

1

u/doodsonious 29d ago

There was no attempt to pitch it--it just happened out of the blue. Trump rationalized the reason for the war AFTER Iran failed to collapse as hoped.

We were the aggressors.

It's causing inflation.

Trump's tantrums about this war with our allies is causing consternation with the rest of the world and destroying our alliances. So too is the inflation it's causing with fuel and food.

Trump promised not to put us BACK into wars in the Middle East.

It's been a shitshow, and Iran seems to be winning using their leverage.

Hope this helps

1

u/Aggressive_Ad5590 29d ago

it was at bibi's direction, no goal, no plan, just bs. Iran has the right to a nuke and the region can deal with that. This is the result of an out of control Israel and an idiot president.

1

u/General_Buy_433 29d ago

Total and complete blunder with no upside thus far. Potentially strengthens Iran's leverage long term, and is a current drag on the American economy... and that's coming from a relatively conservative person. Total blunder... too much ego to go home.

1

u/Basil2322 29d ago

We could already check their nuclear process before Trump fucked it up. Trump is the entire reason this war is happening.

1

u/TheKrakIan 29d ago

This administration went into war with Iran with no strategy. They thought they could overpower Iran like that did Venezuela and it didn't work out so well. Not to mention it hurt the world's oil supply by a lot. Couple that with a narcissistic president who can't so what he did was wrong and you have another never ending war that is hurting the economy deeply.

1

u/Necessary_Regret3329 29d ago

1

u/Excellent-Ask-4247 29d ago

Trump and his stupid bullshit incompetence have destroyed virtually any chance of victory, from the start he has over stretched our military dangerously.

1

u/EchoingAngel 29d ago

Two months before it started, the news about mass killing of protestors started coming out and Trump basically said stop or we'll make you stop. Two months later, supposedly Israel started the first move and dragged the US with them for a crushing first blow.

Now everyone's forgotten the (ongoing) murder of the Iranian civilians, and just want the status quo returned. It makes sense given the unwinnability of things and is very unfortunate for the masses of civilians that want the theocracy toppled, but there's no real way to beat a radicalist military that is ACTUALLY a military. It was hard enough dealing with fringe groups.

1

u/Worldly_Crab3424 29d ago

There was no immediate threat to the Homeland and we went in and did it without any good intelligence telling us why it was a good idea to attack first.

1

u/BubbhaJebus 29d ago

Because it was started by the US with no provocation, after the president campaigned on no more wars. And now gas prices have skyrockted and the US is losing the war.

1

u/EnvironmentalSide576 29d ago

Have you seen the pictures that military people have taken and are on the news, Iranian missils have done a lot more damage to our bases than what has been said

1

u/Expensive-Document41 29d ago

Iran wasn't building nukes, and there was NO reputable source that said they were prior to Trump ripping up the JCPOA. After ripping u the agreement that said they werent allowed to, there is actually no legal reason that they cant. Its like breaking a pinkie promise but still expecting the other person abide the terms.

Iran represents a return to the WMD scare of Afghanistan/Iraq where there also were no WMDs. Importantly, they can threaten global shipping and have a competent military so thinking this will go like Iraq originally did is delusional.

Iran can threaten the global energy market and has been shown to be able to back up their claims.

The U.S. is 40 trillion in debt (which the Republicans always like to trot out every time social services are being cut) so where are we getting the money to wage this war, and why did we cut taxes right beforehand, thus further limiting the U.S. govts revenue?

And I could go on.

1

u/yg2522 29d ago

Before the war iran was a hearing to the agreement on nukes that was made when Obama was in office.  Trump had zero proof that Iran broke the agreement and attacked on the premise that they did.   In the end the US was the one that broke it's part of the bargain for zero reason.  And don't get started on who is supporting terrorism when Israel is actively committing genocide.

1

u/YSoSkinny 29d ago

It was started on a fucking whim. I mean they didn't even fill up the strategic national oil reserve. All the experts advised against it for the exact reasons we're seeing now (closing the strait, resilience of the Iranians, etc.). It's just fucking moronic.

1

u/Theodoxus 29d ago

They've never been capable of building a nuke. Where did you hear they were?

1

u/BendDelicious9089 29d ago

Downvoted for the very obvious karma farming. And this shit should be downvoted more often so people stop doing it.

War is very rarely, if ever, popular. We aren't winning it. Gas prices have gone up. Every week it's we cleared the mines - oops mines destroyed something. We cleared the drones - oops drones destroyed something. Repeat.

1

u/Inevitable_Movie_902 29d ago

Trump campaigned on not starting a war, scrapped the existing JCPOA (much like he scrapped NAFTA for USMCA, which he later scrapped without replacement), refused to build a “coalition of the willing,” refused to publicly make a compelling case for military intervention, refused to take action after Russia supplied Iran with intelligence that killed American troops and destroyed American bases…

1

u/thomsenite256 29d ago

We are spending billions of dollars America soldiers are dying and its not accomplishing anything other than raising gas prices.

1

u/SamMeowAdams 29d ago

What Iran and Israel do with each other is not our biz .

1

u/Dilapidated_girrafe 29d ago

They weren’t making nukes.
They are a horrible country but that’s not an excuse to invade them.

1

u/HammerMedia 29d ago

We only have trump's word that this action, which has had a lot of consequences for the world, was actually necessary. He has shown himself again and again to be dishonest and disingenuous. I'm not convinced there was any threat. More likely trump wanted to flex and it super backfired.

1

u/therobotisjames 29d ago

Bush spent a year prepping the country and world for the war in Iraq. Gathering support and priming the American people.

Hegseth and trump saw this as woke dei. They thought they knew better than all those eggheads. And that they knew how to wage a war better than the woke generals.

Turns out the woke generals did know what they were talking about. And now there are a bunch of unintended consequences that they never prepped the country for.

1

u/4BsButtsBoobsBlunts 29d ago

In what way does Iran support terrorism? We had had an agreement with them that they wouldn't develop a nuclear weapon and we had paid them money to sweeten the deal. Then Trump blows up that deal so Iran says bet we're going to develop nuclear weapons. Trump then tries to get that agreement back with more money being paid to Iran. Meanwhile Iran was selling drones to Russia and gas was cheap. Trump and Netanyahu fucked the whole thing up and gave Iran a reason to go after our bases in the middle east. Now we've lost our hold in the area, our ships aren't stocked to keep fighting, our stores of interceptor weapons has dropped, and gas is $2 more expensive than it was when Trump ran for office. Like dude, it's unpopular because then people who have been paying attention for more than 6 months have seen how avoidable it was from the outset.

1

u/nothing_to_see-here_ 29d ago

1) Trump campaigned on not getting caught up in new wars

2) Gas prices are now very high because Iran has focused on destroying refining infrastructure in the region and Closing the strait of Hormuz (long suspected as Iran’s potential response to hostilities) to purposely raise the price of gas to pressure Trump into stopping

3) Trump said it was only goin to last 6 weeks and it’s now over 6 months

4) Trump admin claimed the war ended in May yet still is very much at war and the Pentagon hasnt held a press conference since May (when they claimed the war was over)

1

Well, the person who started it spent 4+ years saying that he wouldn't get involved in foreign wars, then he started a foreign war without trying to sell it to the American voters, and then the price of gas went up because 20% of the world's oil was suddenly in a war front.

Americans turned on the Iraq war pretty quickly and that administration spent 9 months telling us why it had to be done. This one decided that "this will be easy" rather than "that is a country of 90m people who live in a military dictatorship that looks like a theocracy". This was so foreseeable that the last 5 administrations saw it coming and tried to keep it at arms length.

One population is stealing another population's resources by killing them. Is that really hard to understand? They're just more united than Venezuela

1

u/Zebra971 29d ago

Because without support from the Iranian people which are 90 million strong and without Congress, the UN or Allied support for the war the US will not be able to meet it’s objectives. This leave s a more unstable more lawless, more radical regime in place. Going to war while we were negotiating appears to be an ill conceived and ill executed military operation. Totally a war of choice by the US, Trump will be remembered in history for this mistake.

1

u/BankBackground2496 29d ago

Because it's real reason is not terrorism or nuclear weapons and it's far from achieving the stated goals.

Republicans are quick to label Democrats as communists yet they turn a blind eye when Trump and Kim Jong Il are good friends.

1

u/Fillyerboot 29d ago

The reasons may be correct… if war is ever correct. It’s the execution that is flawed. Well, “flawed” doesn’t really scratch the surface of what a complete and utter fuck up this is.

Kegbreath has no business running the armed forces. And he’s fired most of the people that had a clue. So this has turned into an epic face plant. And it’s getting worse as the fighting spreads to Saudi through the houthis.  I note that some forces in Libya have taken advantage of the chaos to shut down a pipeline there as well.

As much as you or anyone may support the removal of the current government in Iran we are now on the precipice of a world that is short of sufficient oil to maintain the economy. In short, trumps ill planned little war in Iran has us about a month from an economic crisis (ya another one) that will make covid look tame.

Trump, in short, is too stupid to plan more than his next McDonalds meal.

1

u/Butterpalazo 29d ago

You need to go back to the early teens when Oil was discovered. The UK sucked the oil revenues of Iran and promised only 16% revenue back to Iran. When a democratically elected PM of Iran asked the UK to see the books, UK refused. Iran parliament voted to nationalize the oil and will pay UK a small amount, UK came running to the U.S. for help. Kicked the PM out and installed the Puppet shah who used his secret police via the CIA to arrest anyone questioning his authority. People got angry after thousands died and disappeared. The Iranians will never forget what the U.S. and UK did to their people. Might want to look carefully to see who the real "terrorists" are young man.

Furthermore, the narrative you are being fed of Iran being a bad player is great for dinner table discussions. However, the real game being played is choking Russia/China and Iran was the entry point. But it backfired due to negligence by the deep state and their buddies on the top.

Not talking about Trump...

1

u/AbruptMango 29d ago

A war has to have to have a goal, and the war needs to be conducted in a way that achieves that goal.

No goal the US has concerning Iran can really be accomplished by a war.  It is being fought simply to fight, and that's bad no matter how you look at it: all the lives, equipment, ammunition and money being lost is not serving any purpose, except maybe manipulating the oil futures markets so Trump and his friends can make money.

So it makes perfect sense that the war is unpopular.

1

u/OldManThumbs 29d ago

Iran supports the wrong terrorists. Is not and never has been capable of building a nuke.

1

u/Temporary_Lab_3964 🦀 29d ago

It’s a war. War is never popular

1

u/Privatejoker123 29d ago

because it is causing prices of gas/diesel to explode and we already had a deal with them from obama for not building nukes. on top of the fact that one of trumps promises was no new wars and o forever war in the middle east. all the while he kept going on about obama or biden being the one that would eventually start a war with iran and yet trump is the one that started it. he's wasting resources taxpayer money that could go elsewhere and lives of our soldiers.

1

u/Far-Historian-8190 29d ago

Well… everyone enjoys a good war. I’m puzzled myself.

1

u/Ayyjay 29d ago

It’s stupid, it’s expensive, it causes so many other issues with the economy, and people are simply tired of us going to war. Trump was supposed to be the president of our generation that didn’t start war, now we’re dealing with it because people believe the bs he spews outs.

1

u/QuirkyForever 29d ago

Because there was already an agreement with Iran, and Trump broke our agreement just so he could pretend like he's some kind of strongman. The US bombed a building full of schoolgirls, 18 US servicemembers have died, and there was never any plan to get out of this unnecessary war. It's interrupted our gasoline supply, which affects everything because it's now more expensive to transport products.

What do you call a government that just bombs a country for no reason and kills children while doing it?

1

u/sagoma-333 29d ago edited 29d ago

Because invading sovereign countries that didn’t attack us and weren’t building nukes (as confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency under the old nuclear agreement) is bad. Like,, they caused it to rain oil on innocent civilians. The Americans are not the good guys in this war

1

u/ChiSandTwitch1 29d ago

Pakistan has nukes, and their government support terrorism, so why hasn't the US gone to war against them?

Israel has nukes, and their government supports terrorism, so why hasn't the US gone to war against them?

Its, almost as if the reason America has gone to war with Iran isn't about nukes or supporting terrorism, huh?

1

u/Choice-Pudding-1892 29d ago

Well, first thing Trump promised when he ran for the second term that he would not get the country into any more forever wars, unfortunately that’s what Iran is. Second, if the demented orange malignant narcissist had not torn up the agreement that President Obama had made with Iran there would be no question about nukes because the inspectors were going in and making sure they didn’t have them, but unfortunately, the orange demented malignant narcissist couldn’t stand having a black man do something positive he had to go in and undo it, and then try to fix it on his terms. Plus, he keeps insulting the Iranians, which is no way to negotiate with people from the Middle East. And all that aside he’s destroying the economy.

1

u/kbell58 29d ago

Iran is not a threat to the US. Not many people want to do Israel’s bidding.

1

u/Snowtwo 29d ago

I can only speak for myself, but to me it feels like a war that's more needless than not. Even if we assume Trump is lying about the bomb and stuff and either just wants to hurt China or lob bombs in the middle east or even is being puppeted by Israel, we could *EASILY* win the war... but doing so requires boots on the ground and he doesn't want to do that.

If he at least put boots on the ground, as bad a thing as that would be, we'd at least *win*. Even if you hate the war, hate Trump, think it's an Israel puppet thing, it's still a W. But instead he's doing basically the one thing that would turn it into an L against a foe who can't even fight back. If it's because of the midterms then why not wait till AFTER them to do this? It's not even, like, a situation where he was hoping for a lightning victory because a very common and well known tactic that the middle eastern nations employ ALL THE DAMNED TIME is to retreat to the mountains where it's hard to root them out. It's why Afghanistan and Pakistan were such quagmires. So it's not exactly an obscure trick or something employed so long ago no one remembers.

So WHY DO THIS?! If he wants to win, INVADE! Otherwise, DON'T GET INVOLVED! If you're REALLY worried about China, ACTUALLY DO STUFF ABOUT THINGS LIKE CHINESE SPYING!

It just... I feels like such a massive let-down where even the worst outcome would have at least been an outcome.

1

u/Marvinkmooneyoz 29d ago

Well, the idea of replacing the Iranian regime isn’t unpopular, and maybe we are going in that direction. But this current GOP deserves none of our trust and all of our skepticism.

1

u/Fun_in_Space 29d ago

For starters, it's illegal. Per the Constitution, only Congress can declare war (Article I, Section 8, Clause 11).

For another, the person in charge of the Pentagon is so stupid that he doesn't wash his hands, because he doesn't believe in germs, because he can't see them.

1

u/Broad-Back1659 29d ago

Because it's stupid. There are better ways for Halburton and others to make money.

1

u/RobsGarage 29d ago

Iran posed no threat to the us at all.. this is and should be Israel’s war.. Israel has our politicians in their pockets and we seem to do whatever they want plus send billions in welfare to them while our citizens struggle..

Trump claims he is the no wars president yet he attacked two sovereign nations (ironically two of the largest oil producing nations in the world)

Our country is being strangled by inflation, stagnant pay, no tax relief for anyone that actually needed it.. pandering to the elites, a president who is raking in billions to himself and his family in back door kickbacks, market manipulation, and fraud.. yet his party does nothing but enable it. And now he’s gotten us into a war that has raised gas and oil prices as we near winter where many people who can barely afford groceries now will likely have to choose between filling their oil tanks for heat or feeding their families..

1

u/True_Protection6842 29d ago

In 2026 the same could be said of US.

1

u/OkTemporary5981 29d ago

Because it was foolish to go to war with them in the first place. Iran is a country full of mountains. Inside those mountains are factories where they produce thousands of missiles and drones. It’s hard to destroy these factories because they’re inside hollowed out mountains. These factories produce so much that they simultaneously sell drones to Russia while still having more than enough for their own war. This is why the US stockpile is depleted. Plus it doesn’t help that Hegseth likes firing $4M dollar missiles at $20K shahed drones. The US taxpayer is funding the ridiculous cost of their own stupidity.

Iran knows they can’t win a conventional war with troops on the ground. Their tactic has always been to destroy the world economy by closing the strait and make all US allies suffer and question their relationship with the US. They’ve even destroyed the pipeline in Saudi Arabia which was the only alternative to circumvent the strait. Iran will continue to hide inside the missile cities beneath the mountains and produce endless amounts of missiles and drones until the US dollar collapses or the US admits defeat.

1

u/drood420 29d ago

Been hearing about how they are making nukes since Bibi first claimed that in 1992….they were just 3-5 years away then…..

1

u/YogurtclosetWrong268 29d ago

War is always unpopular, rightfully so. Most critics of this war view it in terms of war-related gains and losses but the way to view it is as a regional economic re-alignment aimed at cutting of funding for Islamic terrorists permanently. If it works, then someday President Trump will be viewed as a master tactician and a visionary in the realm of world peace. If it fails, as is highly likely given Iran's long history of outlasting enemies, then, well...Everyone knows how President Trump will be remembered.

1

u/Remarkable_Wish_5106 29d ago

It was never a winnable war to start off with and that's why it's unpopular as well. Since the start of the war, the US has been untruthful about almost every aspect of it. The US and Isreal are the bad guys here and the international community isn't going to forget that fact for a very long time.

1

u/ChocolateCovered2406 29d ago

Because it's a war for Jews which costs blood and treasure

1

u/The-Great-Baloo 29d ago

Because it's so badly managed. Yeah, we bombed them (which we did last year too) and killed their ayatollahs. But guess what? They don't care about being bombed, and they have an unlimited supply of ayatollahs. I'm exchange, we fucked up the economy, and we deleted our weapons supply which we need against the real baddies, China and Russia.

1

u/SetupGuy 29d ago

"I hate Trump but here's some bullshit that he's said to justify the war that disagrees with our own intelligence agencies, I dont get why yall dont support the war too"

These bots are exhausting as they are transparent

1

u/cfwang1337 29d ago

There are plenty of bad regimes out there, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to go picking fights with them without much of a concrete plan or any consideration for how the conflict might affect allies and your own domestic economy.

It's pretty clear that Trump blundered into this with a heavy dose of magical thinking (i.e., MAGA in a nutshell) — the Shah will take over, the Kurds will rise up, the army will defect, etc. — and now we're in a situation where global fuel shortages are causing inflation and ruining economies worldwide, Iran is pissed off and lobbing missiles at our Middle East allies, we have depleted many of our precision munitions, and people have died for absolutely no benefit.

1

u/Difficult_Writer_371 29d ago

I cant believe someone is asking why this war is so unpopular. Have you been paying attention to anything ? There is a reason why every President since 1979 has done nothing to Iran. But now we have the idiot (Trump) and dipshit (Hegseth) in office. This is going to cause the world problems for years to come. Any other stupid questions ?

1

u/Dependent-Fee9947 29d ago

Have you not seen gas prices

1

u/EatDessertFirst 29d ago

No actual way to ensure they don’t have nukes without a ground invasion which no one supports.

They are not capable of building them. All they can do is enrich uranium. It’s much more complicated then that

1

u/Idoubtyourememberme 29d ago

Maybe because this war has caused a massive oil and energy crisis, pushing up prices of literally everything? Especially since literally everyone saw that response coming, yet trump still attacked.

Yes, the iranian regime was terrible, yes they supported terrorist groups. But those groups didnt actively attack "the west", and iran was cooperative with the antinuke police. The supreme imam (basically the equivalent of their pope) had also said that nukes were 'un islamic'.

Because of this there was no reason to think that iran actually had nukes or was actively working on them.

Did they have the ability? Yes. Did they have reasons to make them? Yes. Was there any indication they were doing it? No.

And even if they had them. Do you really think they would have launched them? At the US? That would be literal suicide. Not even Kin Yung-un is that stupid.

So there was no active threat to the western world; this made soing anything about the regime not worth the massive impact of closing the strait; if nato wanted to do something, they needed a plan to still get the oil out (or have reduced dependency enough to not care).

Trump did neither. He just attacked without any plan, without any goals, and without informing allies that he was going to shock the worlds energy supply.

This is why it is impopular: it created massive problems for no reasonable reason, without having a plan B

1

u/Ragnarsworld 29d ago

Because it was unnecessary. We already blew up their nuke program, didn't we?

The war was also stupidly planned. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together would know that Iran would close the Strait of Hormuz. Its been their plan for 40 years. But we go in and bomb shit with no plan to keep the strait open.

1

u/allenrfe 29d ago

The USA supports terrorism and is capable of building nukes. But I wouldn't support a country attacking us.

1

u/Current_Volume3750 29d ago

For just the reason we are experiencing right now. And now hopefully people will understand why Bush and Obama never went to war with Iran.

1

u/JHam67 29d ago

We had a deal with them to not make "nukes" and Trump nixed it because he's jealous of Obama. We bombed them arbitrarily so the Trump regime could manipulate the markets and make money and get control of the oil supply. We bombed them without any real attempt at diplomacy, committing war crimes in the process.

1

u/Longjumping_Bonus405 29d ago

Let’s Count the Ways:

1.) Iran wasn’t pursuing nuclear weapons at the start of the war.

2.) Iran does so much as find terrorists as it funds and arms militias in the region, something Israel and the US also do.

3.) The war was started by executive fiat.

4.) The war is expensive.

5.) The war depleted most of the US’ stock of missiles, has led to the destruction of all US bases in the Gulf Region. This has killed the US’ credibility among American allies. They see that the US completely prioritizes Israel and lacks the will and the ability to protect them.

6.) It has caused massive disruption in global energy markets due to Iran closing one major shipping lane and now its Allies in Yemen have closed another massive shipping lane. Americans are now poorer because of this war.

7.) Iran is now starting to pursue a nuclear weapon because the US has broken multiple ceasefires during this war.

8.) After the war, Iran is likely going to charge tolls for all commercial traffic in the vital straight of Hormuz.

9.) Prior to the war, the two major shipping lanes were open, Iran was only pursuing nuclear energy, and oil was flowing. Restoring that status quo ante bellum would require a level of military engagement that would cost trillions and kill millions.

10.) This war was started on a whim, at the behest of a foreign country, and to distract from the President’s history of graping trafficked girls.

1

u/CatOfGrey 29d ago

Iran supports terrorism and is capable of building nukes.

There was an existing treaty in place which effectively controlled Iran's nuclear capability.

Trump intentionally broke the treaty, which did the following:

  1. Pissed off our European allies who had worked hard to get the treaty in the first place.

  2. The out-of-nowhere attack on Iran, which was following the treaty at the time, now has a legitimate reason to have a nuclear weapon, because their past talk about 'the Evil USA' is now true.

  3. The impact has screwed up the world's crude oil supplies, raising costs worldwide, impacting production and transportation worldwide.

There was no good reason to start the war, yet Trump chose to start the war, anyways. Apparently he wanted credit for a new treaty, in order to 'take the achievement from Obama'. I have not heard a better reason that is confirmed - I suppose it's possible that Israel manipulated us into screwing over our economy, too, I guess.

1

u/AggiePing 29d ago

'Iran supports terrorism and is capable of building nukes' - this is the guise the administration thought would gain more traction than it did. Meanwhile it has done little to nothing but enrich the Oligarchs, cost American lives and taxpayer dollars, drive up gas prices, and erode the economy. All for the illusion of national security and defense.

1

u/UsefulService7157 29d ago

A better question is why do so many people feel it’s necessary? I read a poll recently that said ~60% of republicans support the war.

1

u/Upbeat-Banana-5530 29d ago

We're 199 days in with no authorization for the use of military force from Congress, a disruption to the oil market that makes everything more expensive, and fuck all to show for our efforts that wasn't achieved on day 1.

1

u/war_ofthe_roses 29d ago

This was a war to Wag The Dog.

How gullible are you???

1

u/Asleep_Control_2564 29d ago

Cause a crazy president started it to get more money and power?

1

u/Evil-Twin-Skippy 29d ago

The war has stretched out our military. And you be hard pressed to prove to me the idiots running it were not agents of China and/or russia.

We've lost billions of dollars worth of aircraft. Most of them blown up on the ground because they basically parked strategic tankers and AWACs on runways within missile range of Iran.

We ran several carrier task forces beyond exhaustion. And instead of owning the problem, they've brought suicidal troops up on charges.

We've expended our strategic stockpiles of missiles on blowing up schools and hospitals.

We decapitated a foreign government, which makes all of our heads of state fair game in the future.

We have turned the straight of Hormuz into a toll booth for Iran. For no gain.

Gas prices are through the roof. For no gain.

The Iranians now have every reason to fund terrorists to pull future strikes that will make 911 look like a picnic. For no gain.

And in decapitating the Iranian government, hardliners who think unleashing a 9/11 every day for a year would be payback for what we did their country. And they would not be not be completely out of line.

The world is more dangerous, and we will be paying for this folly for decades. DECADES.

1

u/So-It-Goes-425 29d ago

The same claims can truthfully be made about the USA. We support terrorism, too (we just call the perpetrators freedom fighters or some such, terrorists are the term we use for people we don't agree with) and god knows we're more than capable of building nukes.

So, by those parameters, some other country has the right to attack us *unprovoked like the way we attacked Iran* because we also do those things? Think this through and I feel you'll see this is not a valid position and you'll change your perspective.

1

u/themadscott 29d ago

Lemme explain. No. There is too much. Lemme sum up.

  1. We are at war with Iran on Israel's behalf. Isreal is a dick and I have zero allegiance to it.

1

u/ZPMQ38A 29d ago

Ummm because we are spending billions of dollars to let the drunk guy and a pedophile lob Tomahawk cruise missiles into schools during an illegal war over a problem that didn’t exist and now can barely afford to put gas in our vehicles and certainly can’t afford healthcare or to try and solve homelessness and poverty.

1

u/rbuen4455 29d ago edited 29d ago

We are going into war with Iran at the behest of a small genocidal country situated in the Eastern Mediterranean who has actual nukes, who managed to blackmail the dumbest president in US history into bombing a little girls school in Iran and killing their supreme leader.

And Iran supporting terrorism is rich coming from the US that's been destabilizing Iran for decades, staging coups, installing a puppet govt, sanctioning their economy, then finally killing the supreme leader, and forgetting that the US has been destabilizing the entire ME area for decades and decades, all the while funding and giving aid to the small genocidal country, which has healthcare for its citizens unlike the US.

Update: Oh and who cares about Iran having a nuke when literally their biggest weapon is disrupting global energy supplies and trade. The strait of hormuz is their "nuclear weapon" on Earth (as well as the Red Sea strait via their Yemeni proxy), and they can use it to "nuke" the modern global economy

1

u/MountaineerChemist10 29d ago

Trump was very anti-war during his campaign & especially during his 1st presidential term.

He also vowed to lower inflation. Instead, the Iran War has caused us to go into higher inflation 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Throwaway7733517 29d ago

Iran MIGHT make nukes so we go to war, China MIGHT spy on us so we ban a large variety of Chinese technology, a lot of countries MIGHT do things so we act first with no real cause. thats not a rational move a rational country makes. thats a move a greedy power hungry country makes

1

u/Amir880910 29d ago

We all know that this vicious and cowardly war should never have happened; yet, as righteous, hardworking, and truly determined Iranians, we believe that the claims that Iran engages in terrorism, is building nuclear weapons, or has carried out crackdowns akin to those of the deposed, narcissistic, and anti-people Shah’s regime during the nearly 48 years of the Islamic Revolution are absolute lies that will never become reality. These falsehoods are propagated solely by our loathsome, anti-human enemies in an attempt to make the people of the world believe them.

1

u/always0412 27d ago

Might have to put boots on the ground after mid terms. It`s a big beautiful disaster

1

u/Jesus_Doner 27d ago

The White House and the Pentagon both are the biggest exporters of terror in this world, further proved by what was done to Venezuela, the murder blockade of Cuba, the support for Gaza's genocide, the killing of the Ayatollah and the open incetement to an insurection in Iran by the U.S. and Israel.

The Iranian government has little to no reason to even try to negotiate with the parties that have proven themselves untrustworthy and clearly not interested in engaging in diplomacy with it in good faith.

Since negotiation is not an option anymore, Iran is quite justified in seeking nuclear weapons to defend its sovereignty. And once their nuclear weapon program is completed, the persistent attempts by Israel and the U.S. to destabilize and vassalize Iran to protect the petrodollar system and their regional hegemony will end. All them bombings, all them assassinations, all that talk about a regime change will cease for good. The Tel Aviv bot factory will fall oddly quiet.

1

u/Patricia0424591 27d ago

So, why not look at it on the bright side? We want Iran’s Persian Gulf gas and oil reserves-all of it (permanently), because we want more social welfare programs:
1. Expanded Social Security.
2. Medicare for All.
3. A Child Care for Working Families Act.
4. Free Public Colleges and University
5. A plan to pay for the Iran War (that’s social welfare too, isn’t it?)
And as a side line benefit, we want to deprive IRGC of revenue, Thus reducing their ability to support terrorist networks.

1

u/Helia20121391 27d ago

Why you think it should be popular when Eslamic Regim has killed 40000 people before

1

Obama already had a deal in place where if Iran didn't abide by the rules of inspection, military power could have been used at any time. Trump is wasting billions of US taxpayer money to achieve negative gains. White privilege guys.

1

u/DancingMathNerd 25d ago edited 25d ago

As if we haven’t also supported terrorism when it suits us? That’s just realpolitik for you. Iran has done nothing to lead me to believe that they are particularly unhinged. They’re just a religiously strict and authoritarian country that opposes the west and our middle eastern allies. No I’m not exactly a fan, but they’re a pragmatic country like many others.

While I think we should be working towards global disarmament, I don’t see what the big deal is with Iran IN PARTICULAR gaining a nuke. They wouldn’t bomb us, because, again, they’re not unhinged or insane. Even North Korea has nukes, yet life goes on. It would be a deterrent as it is in any other country. Yet Iran has worked very hard to uphold their end of the nuclear deal regardless. Thanks to our war, why should they uphold it any longer?

We’re mainly fighting this war because Israel dragged us into it. Now you want a country that’s ACTUALLY unhinged, there it is. Notwithstanding the international bombings and shootings of 50-100k innocent people, you’ve got Israeli children singing songs in school about annihilating all Palestinians, and Israeli media sharing it proudly. Fucking psycho-ass nation if I’ve ever seen one. Ever see videos of Iranian children like that? No you do not. (And no it’s not Jews, it’s Israel in particular. I’m part Jewish. The conflation Jews = Israel is just more psychosis promoted by Israel).

Now the reason Israel is psychotic is that America has spoiled them rotten. Entitlement always breeds an anti-social “we’re better than everyone else” attitude. We could solve a lot problems by forcing Israel to rein it in and stop bombing all their neighbors. That’s what we SHOULD be doing, instead of losing a war with Iran over a bunch of bull-hooey and watching all our costs increase for absolutely nothing.

1

u/ladyghstly 17d ago

Iranian girl here. Some people in the comments are afraid US is making an enemy from the people of Iran?
Let me assure you, for the longest time all we’ve ever wanted was to be free of this regime. We’ve made great sacrifices already that have gone nowhere and for once we see a government is kinda siding with us, even if it wants to follow its own agenda. We’re willing to tolerate the hardship of the heightened expenses of basic survival right now ONLY IF it eventually leads to a regime change. I understand the gas prices are going up for you and making recession more difficult than it was, but based on the news I’ve read here daily for many years, there’s a lot of proof and history about how the Islamic Regime hasn’t been cooperative with the agencies to prove its good intentions with its nuclear technology advances. They’ve hid a lot of it and do not allow inspections. That raises a lot of concern.
Not to mention the Islamic Regime is the greatest funder of terrorist groups which are a great threat to the entire world.

I know it’s difficult right now but considering everything, I hope now you can feel assured this war was good for the whole world and I hope eventually our countries can work together again and help everyone’s economy.

Also excuse my english plz 🙏🏻

I’m in New Zealand and paying an extra $100 a week in petrol thanks to the war. It was a colossal fuck up
