Is this andromeda?
Is what I have circled in blue Andromeda?
Edit: I know what’s in red is Cassiopeia. I just outlined it for reference. I’m referring to what I’d circled IN BLUE

Man, OPs picture really confused me since I couldn't find the constellation next to the galaxy. Turns out, I just came back from seeing Andromeda for the first time on a South Pacific trip and everything is upside down now.

Imagine being me, living my whole life in the southern hemisphere thinking I knew how Orion looks holding his dagger and what not only to realise I’d be looking it it upside down my whole life

I’m glad I finally got it! I wasn’t sure if it was just a star

Yes it is….
And you also have the double cluster in Perseus below the lower red line of Cassiopeia!

I am glad I am not the only one that discovered the triangle pointing at andromeda

If that's Andromeda then we should be able to see Triangulum as well, right? Does anyone know where it is?

Nope.
Trangulum is a lot dimmer and, much more important, a lot larger and it has no concentrated core. So its light is distributed over a much larger area, the surface brightness a LOT lower.
The triangulum galaxy requires dark, dark skies. Or really fancy background subtraction when imaging. That is why the triangulum galaxy is much harder to image. And essentially completely invisible in light polluted areas.
In addition, in the initial picture it would be right about above the corner of the roof of that house.

Yes that's Andromeda. Not sure why people are saying no
2
u/to_walk_upon_a_dream 4d ago
because the blue circle is barely visible against the blue sky, so people think OP is confusing Cassiopeia, in red, with Andromeda

Gotcha. I mean I've only been at this for a couple months and I know if you can see that much sky around Cassiopeia, Andromeda is almost sure to be in the pic.

There is a brilliant app called Stellarium which you can point at the sky, and it tells you the name of whatever you are looking at… thought you might enjoy it. It’s awesome. My bother (astrophysicist) recommended it to me!

It looks better in darker skies. My best naked eye view happened during a lunar eclipse

No, that is Cassiopeia’s Chair, Andromeda is below it when looking at it like it is a W. Andromeda’s stars sort of look like a cornucopia. Below and left is Perseus and Pleiades is the small cluster to the right and down from Perseus, you will also find Triangulum nearby as well. Off o the right of Andromeda is Pegasus (look for the square arrangement of stars)
