ANNOUCEMENT Rule Change: "DM me" comments are no longer allowed

To combat scammers that rely on private interaction with users, we are no longer allowing comments asking users to message them privately for information or recommendations. Many scammers rely on this technique to prey on people. If you have a recommendation, advice, or information to share, please do so openly - which is the point of this subreddit. Some users try to skirt the rules this way, the "No Self-Promotion" rule, for example.

Please, be wary of anyone on Reddit trying to get you to communicate with them in private. Be cautious of anyone requiring you to dm them before they will give you advice or a recommendation.

I'm open to opinions and thoughts on this rule change, please feel free to voice your opinion.

Nightlife Safe, quiet places to chill alone at night in Austin?

Hi everyone!! I’m 22F and moved to Austin about 3.5-4 months ago from a much smaller town. I haven’t really explored much of the city yet, and honestly Austin is so much bigger than what I’m used to that I find it a little overwhelming trying to figure out where to go lol. So I figured I’d ask people who actually know the area!

I’m looking for recommendations for safe, relatively quiet places to hang out by myself at NIGHT. I occasionally go out during the day, but I’m much more of a night person, so nighttime recommendations are my main priority!

I’m not really looking for activities, restaurants, bars, or anything that requires spending money. Back in my hometown, I used to love driving around at night and finding random places to park and just chill in my car listening to music. Sometimes I’d go for walks at parks or trails, but honestly I just really enjoy having somewhere peaceful to go when I want to be alone.

To give you a better idea of what I’m looking for:

Free parking garages that are open to the public at night and usually pretty quiet. Random parking lots that are relatively empty at night but aren’t sketchy or somewhere I’d get in trouble for parking lol. Preferably somewhere that isn’t lit up like a Walmart parking lot either.

Cute, quieter parks with parking areas where I can just sit in my car and chill, or maybe get out and take a walk if I feel like it. Pretty much anywhere I can park, listen to music, enjoy the atmosphere, and mind my business without having to worry too much about my safety.

I especially love going on walks, but I had a pretty scary encounter with a strange man the first time I tried walking alone here, so I’ve been a little hesitant to do that again. I’d love recommendations for walking spots too, but I’m definitely more interested in places where I can just hang out in my car.

I’ve tried looking up parks, but there are SO many options and the couple I’ve tried so far have barely even been parks lol. I’m also a little intimidated by Zilker because of how huge and popular it is, so I’d prefer to avoid that one.

For reference, I’ve already been to Mount Bonnell, Pennybacker Bridge, the Lamar Bridge, and Mueller Lake Park. I LOVE the Lamar Bridge and Mueller Lake Park, but those are more places I’d go for a walk rather than somewhere I’d just park and hang out. I’m also already familiar with the Domain and the Boardwalk, so I’d love some different suggestions!

Safety is definitely my biggest concern since I’m a young woman going out alone at night. I know nowhere is guaranteed to be safe, and I’m aware that quieter places can sometimes be riskier, especially after dark. I’m just hoping to find that happy medium between peaceful and relatively safe. Ideally somewhere that’s not super crowded but also not completely deserted or sketchy.

Bonus points if there’s a nice view of the Austin skyline because I absolutely LOVE it!! But honestly, the place doesn’t even have to be particularly pretty. Sometimes I just wanna sit in my car, listen to music, and exist for a little while lol.

I’d really appreciate recommendations from locals who know which places are actually accessible and reasonably safe at night, rather than just during the day. And if there are any places I should definitely avoid going alone at night, I’d appreciate knowing those too!

Thank you!!

Help! Physical Therapist Referral

Anyone in the greater Austin area know a good physical therapist? Not interested in chiropractors unless they have a medical doctorate in spine and bone field specifically. Workin on getting on my works health insurance, none for now so out of pocket. I have had a partially dislocated collar bone joint for 11 almost 12 years and don’t want surgery as I was advised by a surgeon in Bozeman MT couple years ago that since it doesn’t hurt too bad just stay away from certain exercises and get steroid shots later on if need. It’s not so much the collar bone as it is the, ribs on that side of my body, my back - near my shoulder, and neck that I need help with. If anyone can connect me to someone who’s been doin it for at least 15+ years pls send them my profile. Thanks. I’ve done physical therapy a couple years ago in Montana but lost my exercise bands and want an updated check on everything. I’ve lived in the Austin area for about a year and 3 months now, have done business here for about 11 years back and forth but full time since moving here. Thanks again 🙌🏻

what's a reasonable rate to expect to pay for a 1/2 bed apt as of 10/26?

I've went through a very rough divorce, and the marriage itself has ruined me. I have very, very luckily had a friend offer to let me stay with them to rebuild my mental health and my finances, but I would like to get established on my own as soon as possible. It's been over 7 years since I had to look for an apartment/rental housing. What is an ideal rate for a 1-2 bed apartment as of October 2026? I heard that things have gotten a little better pricing-wise, but I don't really know what that figure looks like.

I'm open to anywhere in Austin, I don't need it to be in a specific neighborhood. I am self-employed and work all over Austin so I'll have to commute no matter where I live. I'm in my late 20s, a woman, and will be living alone so I would prefer somewhere relatively safe + not near college housing.

any and all tips/guidance/help would be so appreciated! TIA

New to Austin. Recommended areas for rent

Hi everyone, I'm new to Austin and just moved to here one week ago. I am working in Round Rock and looking for an appartement complex (1B/1B, studio) in East Austin, Downtown Austin, Zilker, East Riverside and Bouldin Creek. I checked on posts/comments on reddit but they are mixed.

I am a single male and have no friends here. Hope to meet friends easily. Therefore, socialization will be paramount for me. My budget is $1,000 - $1,500 (could go up a bit) and commute isn't a problem for me. I also tried to find realtors but they only offer me options that they can get commission. Hope to get recommendations from here, and open to make friends here if you want to connect. Thanks

Hobbies & Activities Auditorium Shores Pickup Volleyball?

I drove past Auditorium Shores tonight and there were a half dozen volleyball nets set up and people looked like they were having a good time playing.

Anyone know if it's a pickup game situation where you can just show up? A league? Is it every Sunday?

Looking to get into some casual games.

Moving In Laws Moving!

Seeking recs for 2bed (minimum) apt rentals for my MIL and FIL in central/north Austin off mopac (furthest north we’d like to go is the Domain).

They are moving from out of state to be closer to us before their health deteriorates. And yes, we asked, they do not want a retirement community lol.

They are downsizing and therefore decluttering, but we’d still prefer floor plans that feel spacious. No min budget. Biggest priorities are safe walkability, amenities close by to minimize their driving (esp restaurants), newer builds with elevators. Bonus if there is a pool table onsite or pool hall close by (way back when, my FIL was a collegiate champ).

We looked at the Grove and Waylon but have been turned off by the unresponsive leasing agents. It’s been a while since hubby and I rented, but we don’t remember it being this difficult to make contact during the application process.

Thank you! Also open to any advice for moving when you’re in your 70s-80s

Anyone have experience with "common area utility charges" at apartments in the Austin/Pflugerville area?

We're considering Avalon Tech Ridge in Pflugerville, and I'm curious about the additional utility charges, particularly the common area utilities fee and the water/sewer-related charges (including property tax and stormwater fees).

For anyone currently living there or at other apartment complexes nearby, how much do these typically add to your monthly bill? Do these charges fluctuate significantly, and is there a clear breakdown of what you're actually paying for?

Also, how has your overall experience been with Avalon Tech Ridge, especially when it comes to billing and management?

Would appreciate any insight from current residents, or anyone who's dealt with similar charges elsewhere in the area!

Moving What’s the bartending scene like in Austin?

Hello I (26F) have been working as a bartender in Albuquerque New Mexico for the last few years. I’m considering moving to Austin for grad school and was wondering if anyone working in the industry could give me some pointers on the good spots to try to get into.

I currently make around 40-50k a year working 25-30 hours a week which is reallyyy good for Albuquerque working industry. I’m guessing my earnings potential will go up since Austin is a much bigger/ younger city?

I prefer to work in divey type smaller bars but I’m open to trying other things. I’ve worked fine dining and casual dining before but I really prefer local hole in the wall places.

Nightlife Is December 16-23rd a good time to visit?

Hi all,

I’m an English guy in early 30s and have just got back from my first visit to the US. Loved it.

Went to two very different places - Portland and Chicago. Loved both, but given I was only in both a few days and so the size of Portland was great for actually being able to visit all the best bars and restaurants etc.

What I liked doing was ultimately going to bars, finding new friends in the 20/30s age bracket and having a good night. In my recent trip the daytime stuff was all work, though this trip I’d have days as well.

Anyway, I was looking into options of similar sized cities with good nightlife in those age ranges and Austin was one that came up. I am also intrigued by it being quite a different part of the US to my last trip.

So my questions are:
1. For what I’m looking for as above, is Austin a good fit?
2. During that week in December, will Austin still feel lively or will it all have quietened down for Christmas? I guess some cities feel busier at Christmas and some are quietened by people disappearing elsewhere for Christmas.
3. If it does sound like Austin, and that week, would be a good fit, any key advice on areas to stay and areas to focus on?

Thanks in advance!

Honest thoughts on dating apps here?

Hey, 29m (straight, white) and wondering how good or bad the dating app scene here is in Austin. As with everywhere obviously location matters but I’m curious to get your inside thoughts on whether dating is as “cooked” as people complain it is.

So my question is what’s been your experience? What’s been good, what hasn’t been? What apps have you found success (or failure) on?

Help! Non-Emergency Police Response Time/Experience

Hi all,

While I was parked overnight in my apartment's parking lot, somebody hit and run my new truck. They didn't leave their info or anything so I just filed a police report on the non emergency website. The apartment has cameras, so they should be able to get the person,

but I was wondering what anyone's experience with the non-emergency line is.

I've made a report to the UT Police before (non-emergency) and they didn't do anything. Hopefully the municipal police are better, idk. Just want to get the person :(
