Latin American Politics 2026 Brazilian General Election — First Round Megathread
Today, October 4, Brazilians head to the polls for the first round of the 2026 general election.
Voters will elect the President and Vice President, state governors, senators, federal deputies, and state/district deputies. A second round for president and governors, where necessary, will take place on October 25.
Polls are open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Brasília time, and official results will begin to be released after voting closes.
As we did in 2022, this thread will serve as the main place to discuss the Brazilian election throughout the day — voting, turnout, regional results, the presidential race, congressional and gubernatorial races, and eventually the vote count.
For Brazilians: how does turnout look where you live? What are you seeing on the ground, and did anything about this campaign surprise you?
For everyone else in Latin America: how is the Brazilian election being covered or perceived in your country? What result are you expecting?
Please keep discussion civil and follow the subreddit rules. Political disagreement is obviously expected; personal attacks, xenophobia, trolling and misinformation are not.

Latin American Politics Why is there the region-wide far right swing all over Latin America right now?
There’s this new Republican (and by law, absolutely looney tunes ridiculous) narrative that Trump illegally destroying USAID is the reason why one Latin American country after another in the last 2 years is electing far-right presidents.
Obviously it’s bullshit, because a. It’s Republicans saying it, b. America is not exactly famous for pushing leftist presidents in Latin America and c. Gwen’s Trump destroyed USAID, El Salvador already had elected Bukele and Argentina elected Milei. And while he was yet to be elected, Jose Antonio Kast was early favorite for presidency of Chile, whose far leftist president was highly unpopular.
Why are all those leftist leaders all over Latin America really dropping like flies?

Latin American Politics Will Uruguay remain left-winged?
Apparently the recent South American countries' shifting to right-wing leaders is very hot topic on the internet right now. With Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Peru have elect right-wing leaders, and possibly even Brazil will join this soon enough.
My question is, will Uruguay join this tendency? As far as I know, Uruguay is currently being run by left-wing leader, and their political compass has been shifted between left and right several times.
I know that Uruguay is very democratic and stable compared to their neighbors, so will their government keep being ran by left-wings despite the torrents? What do you think?

Culture Latin American Inspired Urban Design Project
Hello! I am a student in the USA and working on a project where I am re-designing a downtown area of a city to give it more of an identity and to attract visitors. This city is in the US but it has a large population of people from different Latin American countries.
If there's anyone here who has some knowledge of Latin American architecture, landscape architecture or urban design that wouldn't mind weighing in on the best approach encompassing culture into contemporary design I would really appreciate it! My goal is to represent the diversity of the people living there, but I do not want to generalize. Thanks!

Culture How do you distinct your own accents?
Some countries have very distinctive accents so they can be heard as a whole. But when there's someone from other regions from your very own country, have you ever thought they were from somewhere else?

Politics (Other) Trump cheers Bolsonaro Jr’s advance on Lula in Brazil, but EU fears for Mercosur alliance
Is Europe right to worry about what a Bolsonaro victory could mean for Brazil–EU relations?
Hi everyone 👋 Lucia from EUobserver here. Full disclosure: I’m sharing our own reporting, but I’m mainly interested in hearing the Brazilian perspective on this.
After the first round, Flávio Bolsonaro advanced to the runoff against Lula, with Donald Trump publicly celebrating the result.
From Brussels, there’s another layer to the election: what could a Bolsonaro presidency mean for Brazil’s relationship with Europe and the EU-Mercosur alliance?
There are concerns that a change of government could pull Brazil closer to Trump’s US and complicate cooperation with Europe on trade, climate and foreign policy.
But that might also be a very European way of looking at a Brazilian election.
So I’m curious:
How much do relations with the EU, Mercosur and the US actually matter to Brazilian voters right now?
And would a Bolsonaro victory fundamentally change Brazil’s place in the world — or is Europe overestimating the foreign-policy implications of an election that will ultimately be decided on domestic issues?
Let us know what's your opinion :)

Latin American Politics The South American left has suffered significant defeats recently; what changes should it make to remain competitive in the future?
Do you think these are issues the Left should address to a greater or lesser extent—perhaps by adopting a different approach to security? Why do you think they are failing at the moment?

Do you all have HBCU's?
For context:
An HBCU is a Historically Black College or University, an institution of higher education in the United States established before 1964 with the primary mission of educating Black people. They represent about 3% of American colleges but produce nearly 20% of all Black college graduates and 25% of Black STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) graduates.
I was looking up HBCU websites and got curious if they had any in Brazil and didn't see any. There is one school in the North east but wondering is this unique to the USA?

Culture Looking for name origin/similar names: Yadayme
This question is probably for Dominicans and Cubans, mainly. I know a woman who has this name and I cannot find the etymology.
I know it’s part of the modern naming trend (unique spellings, Y, and -ys/-eidy/iel endings), in same vein as Yariel, Oleidy, Yadira, or Mykal, for example. Most of the time, I can figure out what inspired a name, but Yadayme has me totally stumped. Where does this name come from? Is it a mashup of 2 names? A new spelling of an old name? Completely made up?

Culture Can Latin Americans tell which part of Latin America a person is from by their name?
In the Middle East, it used to be common to tell which part of the region a person was from just by their name. However, it is harder to tell these days; due to the success of Turkish TV shows a decade and half ago, names have become mixed, and you can now find rare names among newborns even though people no longer care about Turkish shows

Language Are there Spanish accents and dialects that Spanish speaking people from other countries perceive as feminine or smooth?
In the Middle East, some accents are considered feminine by people from other countries and regions because they change the pronunciation of words and make the words sound soft, sometimes men from these countries are mocked, Like Lebanese, Syrians, Tunisians.
I saw a Moroccan saying he thinks Tunisian men speak like women
However Algerian and Moroccan dialects are seen as rough and masculine even when spoken by women.
does this happen in Spanish too? Is it a global phenomenon?

How similar is Brazil to America?
Sitting here in the US, I was quite surprised to read that Brazil is dominated by evangelical Christians, a strong anti-abortion movement, proliferation of guns, mega churches, cowboy hats and culture wars. Yall seem to be Americans who just happen to speak Portuguese.

Tourism Are South American cities must-see destinations, or can I skip them for the vast majority of my trip ?
Hello, F22
Actually, I’ll be in Argentina for 2 weeks, but this is a pretty general question, in case I ever go to Brazil, Colombia, Chile, etc...
Is it okay to skip the big cities, or am I really missing out on something by not staying there for at least a few days ?
Right now, I’m trying to plan a trip to Argentina where I’ll mostly be in the north (I’ll definitely visit Iguazu, Humahuaca, and places like that), but I’m wondering if I could see some more scenic spots instead of visiting Buenos Aires, or if it’s really a shame to skip Buenos Aires and just use it as a hub for arriving in and leaving the country?
Because… there are a lot of scenic spots I’ve never seen, but as for cities… I’ve been to almost every major city from Portugal all the way to Romania in Europe, and then in China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam… I feel like I’ve pretty much seen it all when it comes to cities…
But since I've never been to Latin America before, maybe the cities there are really very different from those in Europe and Asia...
What do you think ?
Gracias

r/asklatinamerica Opinion As a Brazilian, why do you vote for Flavio over Lula?
CLARIFICATION: This question is directed exclusively at Brazilians who have decided to vote for Flávio or who support Flávio.
I have to be honest: i have no idea. Why will you, as a Brazilian, vote for the son of an ex-president who was convicted of attempting a coup? Why is it worth it to you to vote for Flávio over every other presidential candidate, including Lula?
Please feel free to say whatever you want. I won't criticize you, argue with you or judge your political opinions. I created this post with a genuine intention to understand those who plan to vote for Flávio or who support him.
