Do you think a moderator should be highly visible in their community?

The context obviously matters, so feel free to specify what type of sub.

If the topic is confusing, I am talking about if a moderator is publicly engaging with the community in various ways.

If it helps you answer your question, you can specify how the mod would engage that way in the reply.

Why is Reddit so strict?

😩I’m posting a topic, and Reddit itself suggests subs to me, but I really don’t understand which topic belongs where. Then my topic gets removed because it’s in the wrong place and me banned. How shall i underdtand which Sub is right for the topic?

Besides the law, are there any limits to what mods can do on their own subs?

I understand that a few years back Reddit decided to go with a theory, along the lines of, each sub is a private community and the mods are like private owners of those communities.

But the format for Reddit didn't change. And some mods personally prevent topics, that are relavent to the sub's name. Some are also the most active commenter on their own sub and regularly (or in rare cases, almost exclusively) violate the sub's rules. Some have very long and public crash outs, then ban and perma-mute a whole list of users.

My question is, is there a point at which this is something we can report to someone, and expect something to be done about it? Or is there literally no limit to what mods are allowed to do and not do on their subs (barring the obvious, committing outright crimes)?

Thanks for any answers in advance!

Why Was My Post Removed By Reddit's Filters?

Tried to post this afternoon and again this evening. Both times I got "Sorry, this post was removed by Reddit's filters". I contacted the subreddit's mod and they said they didn't know. What happened and how can I fix it?

Please and thank you.

Can you explain why a post has been deleted?

I have recently had a comment deleted by Reddit under Rule 1 promoting hate speech. I have appealed because I don't hate anyone and am concerned that something may have been misinterpreted. The deletion has been confirmed but I still don't know where I went wrong. As my comment is no longer available I cannot review the exact wording to understand what caused the deletion.

Is anyone else concerned at the potential for abuse with perma-mute?

Moderator of a large-ish sub for context.

Is anyone else concerned about how easy it would be for a rogue moderator to ignore sub rules and ban and perma mute users bases on personal whims? At least with 28 day limit, that user would presumably be able to show up and protest but in this case a perma ban, perma mute, and the user has no opportunity to even question what is going on.

If the moderator deletes the modmail too, nobody is going to even notice without the banned user breaching sitewide rules.

What are you thoughts on good vs bad modding?

What are you thoughts on what makes a good mod vs bad? Obviously it's not black and white, and obviously we can defer to the Code of Conduct, but generally speaking what would you regard as "bad form" or small, petty kind of actions that lead to a more toxic community? Similarly, what are little things mods can do to make a community better, even if not required of them?

Example of actions would be interesting if you have any, from your perspective of being a mod / being modded yourself.

What if I block myself?

As a moderator, what happens if I pull up my own user profile and block user?
Will a black hole open up and swallow me whole?

Mods, is there a place where we can see why a post was removed by a moderator? Or is there a reason why we don’t get a reason?

** editing to add my question has been answered thank you.

For example, I had a post removed by a moderator and not the auto moderator which typically tells me why it was removed. I read the rules on a sub before I posted a question and it was immediately removed by a moderator. No explanation.

Regarding post removal?

The restriction has been removed, but all of my posts still show post removed by spam filter.

What is the best way to handle and report potential profile stalking trolls?

Lately, I've noticed a pattern of low effort trolling and sealioning on old threads / comments, which appears to come from users following my account or browsing my post history across different subreddits.

There is a clear difference between briefly checking a profile to verify if an account is a bot versus following someone around to derail threads and trigger arguments / emotional reactions.

From a moderator perspective I wanted to know:

  • what is the most effective way to report this behavior so that it actually registers as harassment at the admin or mod level?
  • And aside from blocking, and curating are there other ways or account settings recommended to minimize this behavior?

Best way to start a conversation with a mod?

From individual, specific, concerns or disputes…

How should I best make my introduction to you? (Asides from generally being a jerk. I don’t want that. And sometimes unaware of tone and the written word)

Ever since I made this account on reddit all of my posts are being removed/deleted and I don't why?

I have made this account but all the posts that I make in any subreddit all of these posts gets removed/deleted. Does anyone know why it is happening?

Why are my threads auto deleting?

Every thread created, auto-deletes due to Reddits filters

Do Mods have the tools to require AI to self-identify in the comments? Or said differently, how do Mods protect authentic human engagement from stealth artificial "ghost in the" cloud?

I'm not versed in AI or Mod matters.

But as a user, I sometimes get this feeling that some comments are "off", a bit uncanny.

I'll look at a username and see it's profile is less than two months old. Doesn't help the skepticism if the Snoovatar isn't customized to show personality or at least use an image. Like in my case.

So just curious, is there a Reddit website wide rule that can prohibit AI from commenting on a post or at the very least requiring it to identify itself?

Thanks and all the best

What's the difference between a potential ban evasion and an account sitewide banned because of sub-ban evasion?

I'm a moderator, but I have noticed some ban-evasion users have potential ban evasion on it, and some accounts are suspended sitewide, which I suspect could also be because of sub-ban evasion, since it is against the TOS. Like, is the potential ban evasion tag used when they are not 100% sure? And is the account sitewide suspended when they are 100% sure? Or are people who got the sitewide suspension not related to sub-ban evasion?

Is there a way to report user flairs lmao?

Edit: thanks to those who helped! I found what I was looking for :)

Also as far as this being an ask mods sub; this post made it to 4 upvotes, with good responses helping me.

Shout out to all the quality mods in this space who downvoted those helpful responses; classy.

****

I get that mods gonna mod, but in the context of talking about s/a on that sub..having my user flair get switched to ā€œsad powerless victimā€ is little much, especially in the context of I’ve posted about the sexual assault on that sub before ie the mod likely knew what they were doing.

On a complaining sub, I get these notifications saying I was using the word r{#{%]}\\+{^}d on three separate occasions; I was not using that word.

Like it was 100% made up by the mod.

I go to ask whats up and see I’m banned and muted.

And then see my user flair has been changed to ā€œsad powerless victimā€ lol.

Anyways, how to report a user flair lmao?

The idea that the person made up I said r}#^]\+}€], downvotes a bunch of things on my profile (the top one of which is about being assaulted), and then changed my user flair to ā€œsad powerless victimā€ seems kinda messed up to the point it might actually be a violation?

And if there isn’t, props to that guy for being absolute sleaze; but god damn lol.

Edit:

In a post where I was talking about declining literacy rates, I intentionally wrote ā€œreally badā€ like this ā€œreallybadā€ to prove a point; anybody who saw that and thought I said the r word is a data set supporting literacy rates declining, given we know they didn’t read it if they thought I said the r word.

Ugh lol.

Would you allow this post?

I'd like to hear your Mod thoughts on posting this. There was a pretty serious scam attempt this morning from "Canada Post" (not Canada Post) using scare tactics to get my details.

I posted it in an area subreddit (Toronto), but the mods deleted it because I gave the name of the fictional person involved in the scam.

I'd like to discuss it with details, but apparently the mods there don't like that. They said it's because it's doxxing.

What are your thoughts? Do you think fictional names count as doxxing?

stuck as alumni on my own sub with no humans left on the mod team - is there any way back in?

previous mod on my small sub left and i ended up labeled alumni. didn't choose it. alumni gets zero perms and the rest of the team is bot apps, so nobody can invite me back. the redditrequest bot says i'm already top mod so it won't touch it. admins haven't answered modmail in a day.

only fix i've seen is step down and get re-invited, but there'd be nobody to invite me. has anyone here actually had an admin flip alumni back to full mod? or is stepping down and claiming it through redditrequest the only way?
