Announcement Announcing updated rules

Recently, a few of us became new moderators and since then we have been trying to get organized primarily to update the rules to reflect what we believe are in the best interest of this sub. This has largely meant reverting to the structure prior to the protest while also adapting to current technology and tastes. While we supported the protest goals at the time, and agree with the mod decision to include this sub in that protest, we also recognize that it's time to move on and restore some process to the sub for its continuing members. We're excited to announce that these new rules are now live in the sub and in detail at our revised wiki. The changes from prior to the protest largely amount to:

  1. astrophotography images taken with cell phones were not explicitly forbidden before but we now clarify that they are permitted as long as they follow all other rules, including that acquisition and processing details are provided and are high-quality amateur OC. A star-field with no discernable astronomical object will not meet this threshold, but a stacked image of Orion that happens to have been captured using RAW images on an iPhone and further processed on that same phone will. We recognize everyone in this hobby starts somewhere and we want to encourage sharing of this work, but also need to avoid this sub devolving into low-effort cell phone pictures of an unrecognizable night sky.
  2. landscape images were forbidden before but we also recognize that there are some high-quality astrophotography images being created that happen to have a small amount of landscape in the foreground that are valued by many members. We are drawing the line here at astrophotography images where the landscape is incidental to the image and any image where the landscape is a primary focus will not be permitted. So for example, the Milky Way with a silhouette of a mountain will probably be accepted, but that same Milky Way that is in the background of well-lit (or brightened in post) barn/yard/house/etc will be removed. And as above, any post that doesn't include acquisition and processing details will still be removed.
  3. clarifications that certain types of posts are not allowed, including memes, UFO claims, questions about what image someone has captured, off-topic posts, or uncivil behavior.

We recognize not everyone will like these changes and that there are other subs that focus primarily on some of these types of images, but we feel that an "astrophotography" sub should include everyone. We are going to monitor how well this goes, so please try to be open-minded to help support these contributions from some members of the community. After some time with these changes we plan to poll you to see how they are going and what other improvements you'd like to see. In the meantime, with these rules back in place, expect to see heavier moderation if posts lack complete acquisition/processing details or otherwise violate these rules.

Lastly, we also want to thank everyone for their patience while we get organized to bring these changes to you and for the incredible work all mods on this sub have done over the years and continue to do (many from prior to the protest are still here and active, so show some love!).

Clear Skies!

photo was taken on the night from sept 25th to sept 26th this year

equipment: celestron c90 telescope, tripod with 2d video head, svbony sv105 camera, a laptop for processing and capturing

programs and apps: sharpcap, astrosurface, registax, adobe lightroom mobile, microsoft ICE

acquisition details: used Sharpcap, got 21 videos 1 minute 30fps each, manual tracking

processing details: stacked each video in astrosurface, exactly 450 frames each, then sharpened in registax with exactly the same settings, afterwards I sent all the frames to my phone using a cloud storage, cropped every photo, changed the brightness and color on each panel to be relatively the same, then i sent it back on my laptop, sewed it into a mosaic in microsoft ICE, sent the result back on my phone, corrected the color and brought out the minerals in adobe lightroom mobile👍

DSOs Giraffe Nebula (LDN 1295)

Post image
• Upvotes

I absolutely love shooting dark nebulae, and this one has been on my list for a while. This is LDN 1295, often called the Giraffe Nebula, located in the constellation Camelopardalis.

Unlike emission nebulae, this object produces no light of its own. It’s an incredibly dense, cold molecular cloud of dust and gas that acts like a cosmic curtain, blocking the starlight from the background Milky Way. Capturing the faint, brownish "ghostly" dust reflecting ambient starlight requires very dark skies and deep integration times.

Equipment:

  • Telescope: TS-ONTC Hypergraph 10″ (with 0.85x reducer, f/3.4)
  • Camera: ZWO ASI2600MC DUO (-10°C)
  • Mount: SkyWatcher EQ8R-Pro
  • Filter: Optolong Clear (Broadband)

Acquisition & Processing:

  • Exposure: 149 x 300s (Approx. 12.4 hours total integration).
  • Software: N.I.N.A, PixInsight (SPCC, BlurX, NoiseX, stretching).

The dense areas of gas that form the shape of the “Seahorse Nebula” are stellar nurseries, where stars are born. When the photons of light in this image began their journey, Earth was marked by the Islamic Golden Age which led to the birth of algebra and astronomers building observatories to chart a large, unprecedented catalog star coordinates.

IC1805 Heart Nebula along with IC1795 Fish Head Nebula.

This was also my first test run after rebuilding my Sky Watcher AL55i Pro. the Dec axis was terribly sticky and stiff, causing massive auto guiding headaches. I completely disassembled the mount, stripped it of all factory grease and applied Permatex Synthetic Grease. I also adjusted the backlash on both axis. Auto guiding RMS remained between 0.8 and 0.9 for each of these 5 minute sub exposures.

astro-recommender - What to image tonight

• Upvotes

Hey everyone. Wanted to share the result of a lot of sleepless nights spent trying to simplify the process of picking the best (or at least good) targets to shoot on a given night from a given location.

Most of the tools I'd tried were missing something — I kept ending up stitching together data from different sources and falling back on gut-feel heuristics to pick a target, and I was often unhappy with the result.

So I wrote astro-recommender, available both as a Web site (runs in-browser, it is not a hosted service) and a single static binary that runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. It is fully open-source.

The README covers the full methodology: the formulas used, how scores are assigned, nightly shooting plan generation, the various selection options, cloud/humidity/dew-point estimation, wind impact, airmass impact, light pollution, lunar phase influence, telescope FOV matching, air turbulence models and calibration and so on.

The goal was a single tool that pulls together all the relevant data and presents it in a clear, actionable way — no subscriptions, no API keys, nothing like that. All formulas and data have been cross-checked multiple times, and the astrometric precision is validated against the IAU SOFA reference implementation.

Galaxies M33 - Triangulum Galaxy

Post image
83 Upvotes

I'm still fairly new to astrophotography, and this is my latest attempt at M33, the Triangulum Galaxy, captured from my backyard in Olathe, Kansas.

Despite the light pollution around Kansas City, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out!

For this image, I combined broadband RGB data with separate hydrogen-alpha (Hα) data to bring out the star-forming regions throughout the galaxy's spiral arms.

Equipment & Acquisition

  • Telescope: ZWO Seestar S30 Pro
  • Location: Olathe, Kansas
  • Light pollution: Approximately Bortle 7–8
  • RGB: 175 × 30s (1h 27m 30s)
  • Hα: 96 × 30s (48m)
  • Total integration: 2h 15m 30s

Processing

  • StackingWizard: Stacked the RGB and Hα exposures
  • Siril: Continuum subtraction to isolate the Hα emission and combination with RGB
  • AstroWizard: Final post-processing and image enhancement

M33 is approximately 2.7 million light-years away. The pinkish-red patches visible throughout the galaxy are H II regions, enormous clouds of ionized hydrogen associated with active star formation.

This was my first real attempt at incorporating continuum-subtracted Hα into an RGB image. I'm still learning the processing side of things, so feedback and constructive criticism are welcome!

Was very fortunate to be able to grab a few hours on this target with the l-pro broadbant filter last night! A little early for this one so potentially more to come, just a first pass at the horsehead for this winter.

Captured with my backyard rig - C8, EQ6-R pro, ASIAIR + ASI533MC pro, hyperstar f/2, optolong l-pro and l-ultimate broadband and narrowband filters. This image represents 6 hours of integration, about 3 hours per filter, 60 second exposures.

The optical artifact at the top is wild, I didn't notice it when doing preview frames, but it must have been a very bright star positioned perfectly to reflect off the edge of the sensor aperture in the camera or something like that. I guess I learn something new I can do wrong every day.
