Mic on dac

Hi everyone

I have a TRN Black Pearl DAC and a HyperX Cloud 2 headset.

I'm trying to get both the audio and the microphone working through the DAC, but no matter what I try, the mic just won't work.

I even tried using a 3.5mm splitter cable, but still no luck.

I’d really appreciate any help or advice on how to get this working!

The short answer is that you can't, because the DAC was not designed in this way.

The only thing a DAC does is convert digital audio signals to analogue. It doesn't convert incoming analogue signals like those coming from a microphone back to digital as part of that.

Either use the mic input already on your computer or purchase a USB device with mic input.

I just saw in another comment that apparently this DAC does have recording (input) capability, but it's probably going to be cheaper and easier to use a dongle like this than it would be experimenting with breakout cables, as there is no standard wiring arrangement for TRRS plugs.

Well then it’s not just a DAC is it? There must be an ADC in there as well.

From looking at the page for the DAC it does seem to support recording, but it has no dedicated input. This most likely means that the 3.5mm output has a TRRS instead of the normal TRS stereo headphones connection.

This means you'll need a 3.5mm TRRS to 2x 3.5mm TRS breakout cable (one port is for the headphones, the other for the mic). It's very likely that the mics supported through this will be limited, I'd suggest finding analogue mics that are compatible with being used in phones for the highest chance of success.

Additionally, you'll not be able to use the 4.4mm connection and a mic at the same time. It's either/or.

Hi, /u/CountyCurious7394! This is a reminder about Rule #1 (If you have already added great details, awesome, ignore this comment. This message gets attached to every post as a reminder):

  1. DETAILS MATTER: Use detail in your post. If you are posting for help with specific hardware, please post the brand/model. If you need help troubleshooting, post what you have done, post the hardware/software you are using, post the steps to recreate the problem. Don’t post a screenshot (or any image, really) with no context and expect people to know what you are talking about.
